Chapter 7: The Secret Behind Vanessa’s Smile

The message stayed on my screen.

One sentence.

Seven words that changed the way I looked at the entire house.

*You have no idea who you married.*

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands tightened around my phone.

Vanessa noticed.

“What did it say?””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I didn’t see my wife.

I saw a person I didn’t know.

Someone who had spent a year sleeping beside me while hiding parts of the truth.

“You tell me.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

I turned the phone around.

She read the message.

The color drained from her face.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who sent that?””

Nobody answered.

Because Vanessa already knew.

I could see it.

The fear.

The recognition.

“You know who it is,” I said.

She shook her head.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too perfectly.

I stared at her.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

My voice was calm.

That scared me.

Because hours ago, I was angry.

Now I was just exhausted.

Exhausted from discovering another secret every time I opened my eyes.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why did you say there was someone else?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Because she wasn’t the only one Emily was worried about.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Stop.””

“No,” I said.

“Everyone keeps telling me to stop.””

I pointed toward the staircase.

“My daughter spent months afraid in this house.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She thought asking for food was wrong.””

Then at Daniel.

“She thought her real father was a stranger.””

I took a breath.

“I’m done letting other people decide what I deserve to know.””

The room went silent.

Finally, Vanessa whispered:

“Her name is Claire.””

I frowned.

“Who is Claire?””

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

“She was Emily’s sister.””

I froze.

“Emily had a sister?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt like I was hearing about an entirely different life.

“A sister who was never mentioned?””

“She and Emily stopped speaking years ago.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because of Lily.””

I felt a knot form in my stomach.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Claire believed Lily should have been raised by her.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you know Claire.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“She never accepted Emily’s choices.””

I turned toward him.

“You knew her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Before Emily died, Claire contacted me.””

My jaw tightened.

“You’re telling me there was another person involved this entire time?””

“Yes.””

“And nobody told me?””

Nobody answered.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

I walked away from them.

Toward the living room.

Toward the pictures on the wall.

There was one of Lily’s first birthday.

One of her learning to walk.

One of her wearing a Halloween costume.

All moments I thought belonged only to us.

Now every picture felt like a page missing from a book.

“Why did Claire contact you?””

Daniel followed slowly.

“She wanted information.””

“About Lily?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He hesitated.

“Because she believed Emily stole Lily from her.””

I turned.

“Stole?””

Daniel nodded.

“She thought Emily was selfish.””

I laughed quietly.

“My wife was dying.””

“I know.””

“She was trying to protect her child.””

“I know.””

“Then how could anyone think that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Claire didn’t see it that way.””

Before I could answer, Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Michael.””

I looked at her.

“There’s something else.””

I almost smiled.

“Of course there is.””

She accepted the bitterness.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I should have told you everything.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“Claire was the one who encouraged me to marry you.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She thought being close to you would help her understand Lily’s life.””

The room became silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You married me because of Claire?””

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“I married you because I loved you.””

I didn’t respond.

Because I didn’t know if I believed that anymore.

“But Claire contacted me before we started dating.””

“Why?””

“She wanted to know if Lily was happy.””

I shook my head.

“And you agreed to spy on us?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“At first, no.””

I looked at her.

“At first?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She nodded.

“You’re right.””

She looked upstairs.

“At first, I wanted to help Lily.””

I felt anger rise.

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa was quiet for a long time.

Then she said:

“I started believing Claire.””

I stared.

“Believing what?””

“That Lily was keeping you from having your own life.””

I couldn’t believe it.

“You let someone convince you my daughter was a problem?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“I was jealous.””

She looked at me.

“There. I said it.””

I said nothing.

“I saw how much you loved Lily.””

“That’s what a father does.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because I wanted you to love Mason that way too.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Mason?””

“He always felt second.””

I shook my head.

“That’s not Lily’s fault.””

“I know.””

“Did you punish her because you were angry at me?””

Vanessa couldn’t answer.

And that was the answer.

My chest tightened.

I remembered every time Lily asked if Mason could have the bigger piece.

Every time she gave away her favorite toy.

Every time she tried to make everyone happy.

She wasn’t selfish.

She was five years old.

And she was trying to survive a situation created by adults.

Then footsteps came from upstairs.

Mason appeared.

His face was pale.

“I heard.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Mason, go back upstairs.””

“No.””

He walked down slowly.

“I’m tired of everyone telling me to be quiet.””

Nobody spoke.

The boy looked at me.

“Claire came here.””

My eyes narrowed.

“When?””

“A few months ago.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Mason.””

But he continued.

“She talked to Mom outside.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You never told me.””

Mason shook his head.

“Because Mom said it was grown-up stuff.””

“What did Claire say?””

Mason looked afraid.

“She said she knew how to make Lily leave.””

The room froze.

My voice dropped.

“What?””

Mason nodded.

“She said if Lily wasn’t here, everything would be better.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“That’s not what she meant.””

I turned toward her.

“Then what did she mean?””

Nobody answered.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

I opened it.

This time, there was a photo.

A picture of Lily.

Taken that morning.

At the kitchen table.

Eating pancakes.

My blood turned cold.

Because the photo was taken from outside the house.

The message underneath said:

*She looks happy now. Let’s see how long that lasts.*

I immediately looked toward the window.

Nothing.

No car.

No person.

Just the quiet street outside.

Then Mason whispered:

“Dad…”

I turned.

His face had gone completely white.

“What?””

He pointed toward the photo.

At the corner of the image.

A reflection in the glass.

A person standing outside.

Watching.

May you like

Mason’s voice shook.

“That’s Claire.””
