Chapter 6: The Truth Standing at My Door
The man outside knocked again.
Three slow knocks.
Not angry.
Not impatient.
Almost confident.
Like he already knew I would open the door.
Lily was still holding onto my shirt.
Her small fingers were wrapped tightly around the fabric.
I looked down at her.
Then at Vanessa.
Then back at the door.
Five years ago, I would have opened it without hesitation.
I was the kind of person who believed every problem could be solved with a conversation.
But now I knew better.
Some doors should stay closed until you understand what is waiting on the other side.
“Michael,” Vanessa whispered.
“He’s not going to leave.””
I stared at her.
“You sound like you know him.””
She looked away.
That was enough of an answer.
I walked toward the door.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Lily’s eyes were wide.
“Who is it?””
I knelt down.
“Someone who wants to talk.””
“Is he mad?””
I forced myself to smile.
“No, sweetheart.””
But I wasn’t sure.
I didn’t know anything anymore.
I opened the door.
The man standing outside looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.
That somehow made it worse.
He looked ordinary.
Early forties.
Dark hair.
A tired face.
The kind of face belonging to someone who had spent years carrying regret.
His eyes immediately moved past me.
Toward Lily.
The second he saw her, his expression changed.
Like he had just seen a ghost.
“Lily.””
My body instantly moved.
I stepped between them.
“Don’t.””
The man stopped.
His eyes returned to me.
“I’m Daniel.””
“I know.””
His jaw tightened.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
He looked past me at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“So you found out.””
I felt anger rising.
“Found out what?””
“That she’s my daughter.””
Lily moved closer behind me.
I could feel her shaking.
Daniel noticed.
His face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“I never wanted her to be afraid of me.””
I looked at him.
“But she is.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
That answer surprised me.
Most people who hurt others defend themselves.
They create excuses.
They blame circumstances.
Daniel didn’t.
He just stood there.
Like he knew he had already lost something.
“You left,” I said.
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“You knew Emily was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Lily existed.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Then explain why you’re here.””
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Because I made the biggest mistake of my life.””
I almost laughed.
“A mistake?””
I pointed toward Lily.
“She grew up without knowing you.””
“I know.””
“She learned to ride a bike without you.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“She cried when she lost her first tooth because she thought something was wrong.””
His expression broke.
“I know.””
My voice became colder.
“How?””
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because I watched.””
The words hit me.
I stared at him.
“You watched?””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Michael—”
“No.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You watched my daughter grow up?””
He nodded slowly.
“I did.””
“And you did nothing?””
“I wanted to.””
“Wanted to?””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
“That’s your excuse?””
Daniel looked away.
“No.””
His answer was quiet.
“I don’t have an excuse.””
For some reason, that made me angrier.
Because I wanted him to fight.
I wanted him to give me a reason to hate him.
But he just stood there accepting everything.
“I stayed away because Emily asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked at me.
“She told me if I came near Lily before she was ready, I would destroy the life she built for her.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Emily never told me that.””
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to use Emily’s name like that.””
Daniel flinched.
“I’m not.””
“Then prove it.””
He reached into his jacket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And pulled out an envelope.
“I brought this because I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
He handed it to me.
I didn’t take it immediately.
“What is it?””
“A letter from Emily.””
My heart stopped.
“Emily died five years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how do you have a letter from her?””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Because she wrote several.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She looked down.
“You knew?””
She didn’t answer.
“You knew there were letters?””
“Yes.””
My anger shifted.
“You knew about this the whole time?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Not everything.””
“How much?””
She whispered:
“Enough.””
I looked between them.
Two people who knew pieces of my daughter’s life.
Pieces I had never been allowed to see.
I took the envelope.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a single page.
Emily’s handwriting.
The handwriting I used to see on grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Little notes left beside my coffee cup.
Michael,
If you are reading this, then something happened that made the truth come out before I was ready.
I’m sorry.
I’m so sorry.
I sat down.
My legs felt weak.
The letter continued.
You deserve to know everything about Lily.
And you deserve to know why I made the choices I made.
I looked up.
Daniel was watching me.
Vanessa was crying silently.
I kept reading.
Daniel was not ready when Lily was born. He was scared. He ran.
I wanted to hate him forever.
But then he came back.
I stopped.
Came back?
The letter continued.
He came back when Lily was three months old. He wanted to change. He wanted to be her father.
My eyes moved faster.
Then why didn’t I know?
Because I was afraid.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
Emily’s words continued.
I was afraid because Daniel had changed, but I didn’t know if he had changed enough.
The next sentence made my heart stop.
So I asked Vanessa to watch him.
Not Lily.
Him.
I lowered the paper.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“She asked me to make sure Daniel wasn’t dangerous.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You weren’t?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then why did you stay away?””
He swallowed.
“Because Emily died before she could tell me what she decided.””
The room became silent.
I looked back at the letter.
The final paragraph was written differently.
Like Emily had rushed.
Michael,
The most important thing I need you to know is this:
Lily knows you as her father because you are the person who chose her every single day.
I closed my eyes.
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Then I read the final line.
But there is something Vanessa never told you.
My eyes stopped.
My breathing slowed.
I looked at Vanessa.
She went pale.
“No.””
I looked back at the paper.
The sentence waited.
The secret.
The thing Vanessa had hidden.
The thing Emily wanted me to know.
I read it.
Daniel is not the only person from Lily’s past who has been watching her.
My blood went cold.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Like he already knew.
Vanessa whispered:
“Michael…”
I stood.
“What?””
She looked toward the window.
Then toward Lily.
And finally at me.
“There is someone else.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“The person who has been sending Daniel information.””
My stomach dropped.
“Information about what?””
She looked directly at Lily.
“About you.””
I stepped closer.
“Who has been watching my daughter?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment…
my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
May you like
One sentence.
*You should have listened to Vanessa. You have no idea who you married.*
