Chapter 9: The Son Who Carried Someone Else’s Sin
The room broke apart in an instant.
Not physically.
Not with shouting.
Something worse happened.
Everyone stopped knowing what to believe.
The video froze on Ryan’s face.
My husband.
The man I had loved for six years.
The man who stood beside me at our wedding and promised he would never let me face anything alone.
The man who had looked just as shocked as everyone else when Walter’s secrets began unfolding.
Now his face was on the screen.
And nobody knew why.
Ryan stared at the tablet.
His lips parted.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Nobody answered.
Even Patricia looked stunned.
Not angry.
Not satisfied.
Confused.
For the first time that night, she looked at her son like she was seeing him for the first time.
Mr. Harris quickly paused the recording.
“Everyone needs to remain calm.””
Ryan turned toward him.
“Play it.””
The lawyer hesitated.
“Ryan—”
“Play it.””
His voice cracked.
“I deserve to know.””
I watched him.
My heart hurt.
Because I remembered the first time I met Ryan.
He was not like this.
He was gentle.
Patient.
He hated conflict.
When Patricia criticized me, he always tried to avoid choosing sides.
I used to think he was trying to keep peace.
Now I wondered if he had spent his entire life avoiding the truth.
Mr. Harris pressed play.
The screen returned to Walter’s study.
Walter looked older than before.
More tired.
But his eyes were clear.
“Emily, if you are watching this, then you have seen a recording that may have caused you to doubt Ryan.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
The room went silent.
Walter continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
A pause.
“Ryan is not the person who betrayed us.””
Everyone looked at him.
The air seemed to leave the room.
Ryan opened his eyes.
“What?””
Walter continued.
“His name appeared in my investigation because someone used him.””
Patricia’s face changed.
“What?””
Walter looked directly into the camera.
“Ryan was innocent.””
I watched my husband breathe again.
Like he had been underwater.
But the relief lasted only seconds.
Because Walter continued.
“However, Ryan was the reason I discovered the final piece of the puzzle.””
Mr. Harris frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Walter answered.
“Because someone tried to use Ryan’s identity to hide their crimes.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Someone used me?””
The video continued.
“Years ago, I discovered irregular transfers connected to a company account.””
Walter looked down.
“The transactions were approved using Ryan’s identification.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I never approved anything.””
“I know.””
Walter’s voice softened.
“That is why I knew something was wrong.””
Patricia stared at the screen.
Then suddenly she whispered:
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
Ryan turned.
“Mom?””
She looked terrified.
Not because she was accused.
Because she understood.
Mr. Harris looked at her.
“You know what he is talking about.””
Patricia shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Mom.””
She looked at him.
“I swear.””
He laughed quietly.
“You keep saying that.””
His voice broke.
“But I don’t know what your promises are worth anymore.””
Patricia looked devastated.
But she stayed silent.
Walter continued.
“The person who created the false records understood something.””
He leaned forward.
“They knew nobody would suspect Ryan.””
My stomach tightened.
Because that was true.
Ryan was the perfect shield.
The quiet son.
The person who never questioned his family.
The person who trusted too easily.
Walter continued.
“They also knew Ryan’s identity would protect the real person responsible.””
Mr. Harris stopped the video.
“Before we continue…”
Everyone looked at him.
“I need to ask something.””
He turned toward Ryan.
“Ryan, where were you the night your father died?””
Ryan froze.
The question was simple.
But it changed everything.
“I was…”
He stopped.
I saw it.
The hesitation.
The memory.
“Ryan?””
He looked at me.
“I don’t remember the entire night.””
Nobody moved.
“What do you mean?””
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“I had been drinking.””
Patricia immediately stepped forward.
“Ryan—”
“No.””
He looked at her.
“Let me answer.””
His voice was exhausted.
“I had argued with Dad.””
“About what?”” Charlotte asked.
Ryan looked down.
“He told me he was disappointed in me.””
That surprised me.
“Why?””
Ryan swallowed.
“He said I trusted people too much.””
A painful smile crossed his face.
“He said I was so desperate to believe everyone was good that I ignored the truth right in front of me.””
Everyone looked at Walter’s portrait.
Ryan continued.
“I left.””
“Where did you go?””
“I drove.””
“Where?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Mr. Harris looked concerned.
“Ryan.””
“I know how it sounds.””
“No.””
The lawyer’s voice was gentle.
“It sounds like someone may have wanted you to forget.””
Ryan looked up.
“What?””
Walter’s video suddenly continued.
“Ryan was drugged that night.””
Everyone froze.
Ryan stared at the screen.
“What?””
Walter continued.
“I discovered evidence that someone had given him medication without his knowledge.””
Patricia’s hand went to her mouth.
Mr. Harris looked shocked.
“Why didn’t you tell him?””
Walter’s voice became sad.
“Because by the time I discovered it, I understood how dangerous the situation had become.””
The screen showed Walter looking directly at the camera.
“I was trying to protect my son.””
Ryan looked away.
The words affected him.
Even after everything.
Even after learning Walter was not his biological father.
He still wanted those words.
“My son.””
Walter had always meant it.
The video continued.
“The person who drugged Ryan also attempted to alter company records.””
A pause.
“And that person had access to our home.””
Everyone looked around.
The house suddenly felt smaller.
More dangerous.
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“Emily.””
I picked it up.
“I’m here.””
“I need to tell you something.””
His voice was urgent.
“The person Walter was looking for wasn’t Marcus.””
Everyone looked at Marcus.
He stiffened.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“Marcus stole money. Patricia helped him hide it.””
Patricia looked furious.
“But they were not the reason Walter died.””
Ryan stared.
“Then who was?””
Daniel went silent.
Too long.
Then he said:
“Someone who knew Walter’s entire plan.””
My chest tightened.
“Who?””
Daniel answered:
“Someone Walter trusted after everyone else betrayed him.””
Nobody spoke.
Mr. Harris looked at the video.
“Walter?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“Someone younger.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel said:
“The person who helped Walter create the recordings.””
A chill went through me.
I looked at the tablet.
At Walter.
At the hidden files.
Someone had helped him.
Someone knew everything.
Someone had been close enough to protect him.
The screen flickered again.
A new section of the video appeared.
Walter looked different.
Like this recording was made later.
His expression was serious.
“Ryan, if you are watching this, then I failed to protect you.””
Ryan stepped closer.
Walter continued.
“I need you to know that what happened was not your fault.””
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“I should have told you the truth sooner.””
A pause.
“The reason I couldn’t was because the person responsible threatened someone you loved.””
My heart stopped.
Everyone looked at me.
Walter continued.
“They threatened Emily.””
The room went silent.
I felt cold.
“What?””
Walter looked into the camera.
“Emily, the reason Patricia targeted you was not because of the inheritance.””
A pause.
“It was because you were the only person who could expose them.””
Mr. Harris whispered:
“Who?””
Walter answered.
The video glitched.
Then came back.
And his final sentence played.
“The person responsible is the one who has been protecting Emily from the beginning.””
Everyone stared.
Slowly…
Everyone turned.
Not toward Ryan.
Not toward Patricia.
Toward the only person who had spent the entire night helping me.
The only person Walter trusted with every secret.
The only person who had guided the investigation.
Mr. Harris.
The lawyer.
He took one step back.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
