Chapter 6: The Man Walter Was Trying to Protect

Nobody spoke after Walter’s confession.

Not Ryan.

Not Patricia.

Not even Mr. Harris.

The video continued to play, but the room felt frozen in place.

My eyes stayed on the screen.

On Walter’s face.

The man who had treated me like a daughter.

The man who had held my hand when I cried.

The man who told me I deserved to know the truth.

And now he was admitting he had been part of the reason my father disappeared.

My hands started shaking.

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily…”

I stepped away from everyone.

I couldn’t look at him.

I couldn’t look at Patricia.

I could barely look at the screen.

Because the person I trusted most had just become part of the mystery I spent my entire life trying to solve.

Walter’s voice continued.

“Emily, if you are watching this, then I have already lost the chance to explain everything myself.””

The video showed him sitting in his study.

Older.

Tired.

But clear.

“I know you have questions. You deserve answers.””

He paused.

“I also know you may hate me after hearing them.””

My chest tightened.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what this would do.

“I accept that.””

The room stayed silent.

“Daniel Cross was not a criminal. He was not a man who abandoned his family. He was a man who discovered something he was never supposed to find.””

Mr. Harris leaned closer to the screen.

“What did he find?””

Walter answered from the recording.

“The truth about Whitaker Industries.””

Everyone looked toward the lawyer.

Even he seemed surprised.

Ryan frowned.

“My father’s company?””

The video continued.

“Twenty-eight years ago, Whitaker Industries was growing rapidly. We had investors, employees, and opportunities. But success attracts people who want shortcuts.””

Walter took a breath.

“Daniel discovered financial fraud within the company.””

Patricia immediately spoke.

“That’s not true.””

Everyone turned.

She looked defensive.

“You’re believing a dead man’s accusations?””

Ryan stared at her.

“You knew about this?””

Patricia said nothing.

That was becoming her answer too often.

Mr. Harris looked at her.

“Mrs. Whitaker, were you involved in company finances at that time?””

“I was his wife.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

Her face hardened.

“I helped my husband.””

Ryan laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Apparently everyone helped Dad except the people he trusted.””

Patricia looked hurt.

But she recovered quickly.

“Your father was not perfect.””

Nobody argued.

Because Walter himself had admitted that.

The question was what he had done with his mistakes.

The video continued.

“Daniel found evidence that someone inside the company was moving money through fake accounts.””

Walter looked directly into the camera.

“I should have listened to him.””

My heart sank.

“Instead, I made the biggest mistake of my life.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I trusted my wife.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

Ryan turned toward her.

The room became unbearable.

Walter continued.

“Patricia convinced me Daniel was trying to destroy me.””

I felt anger rising.

Not because I was surprised.

Because I wasn’t.

I had watched Patricia manipulate people all night.

I had seen how easily she twisted the truth.

But Walter’s next words shocked me.

“She told me Daniel was planning to take my company and disappear.””

Mr. Harris frowned.

“But Daniel disappeared.””

“Yes.””

Walter looked at the camera.

“Because I believed the wrong person.””

Ryan whispered:

“Mom…”

Patricia suddenly moved.

“You don’t understand.””

Ryan looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I don’t.””

She looked at her son.

“I was trying to protect us.””

“From what?””

She didn’t answer.

“From what?””

Ryan’s voice rose.

“My whole life has been built on lies. So tell me what you were protecting me from.””

Patricia looked at him.

Then she looked at me.

And I knew.

She was about to choose herself again.

“I was protecting you from your father.””

Ryan froze.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The words came out cold.

“Walter was dangerous.””

Mr. Harris shook his head.

“That is a serious accusation.””

Patricia laughed.

“Is it?””

She looked at the portrait.

“Everyone thinks Walter was some kind, generous man.””

Her expression changed.

“But nobody saw what he was capable of.””

I thought about Walter.

His kindness.

His patience.

His quiet sadness.

Could there have been another side?

Maybe.

People were complicated.

But Patricia’s accusations felt different.

They weren’t coming from pain.

They were coming from someone trying to survive exposure.

The video continued.

“I confronted Patricia after discovering Daniel’s evidence.””

Walter’s voice became heavier.

“She admitted she knew about the financial fraud.””

Ryan looked shocked.

“What?””

Charlotte covered her face.

“No…”

Walter continued.

“She told me she had made a choice.””

A pause.

“She chose money over the truth.””

Patricia suddenly shouted:

“Stop.””

Everyone turned.

She looked desperate.

“Turn it off.””

Mr. Harris ignored her.

Walter’s voice filled the room.

“But Patricia made another choice that changed everything.””

The screen flickered.

Walter looked away from the camera.

Like remembering the pain.

“She contacted Daniel.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

The video continued.

“She told him she wanted to help him escape.””

Patricia whispered:

“No…”

“She told Daniel I would hurt him.””

Walter closed his eyes.

“And Daniel believed her.””

The room was completely silent.

Mr. Harris looked at Patricia.

“What happened after that?””

Walter answered.

“I followed them.””

Ryan looked confused.

“Followed them where?””

The video paused.

Then Walter said:

“To the warehouse where Daniel was hiding.””

My breathing stopped.

Because I suddenly remembered something.

A smell.

A sound.

A memory from childhood that never made sense.

A dark room.

Rain hitting a metal roof.

A man’s voice saying:

“Don’t let them find her.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Ryan noticed.

“Emily?””

I barely heard him.

“I remember something.””

Everyone turned.

I closed my eyes.

“When I was eight…”

My voice shook.

“I woke up in the middle of the night.””

No one interrupted.

“My mother was crying.””

I swallowed.

“She told me we were leaving.””

Patricia stared at me.

“She packed one bag.””

I looked at her.

“She kept saying we couldn’t stay.””

Mr. Harris asked gently:

“Did she say why?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Then another memory came.

A voice.

A name.

“My mother said someone was looking for us.””

Patricia went pale.

Ryan saw it.

“Mom?””

I continued.

“I never knew who.””

I looked at the screen.

“But I remember my father.””

My voice became smaller.

“He held me.””

The room disappeared around me.

“He told me something.””

I had not spoken these words in ten years.

“He said, ‘Emily, if anything happens, remember this. The person who smiles at you the most is not always the person who loves you.’”

Everyone looked toward Patricia.

She looked away.

The video continued.

Walter’s face appeared again.

“Emily, I found Daniel that night.””

A long pause.

“And I made a decision I regret every day.””

Ryan whispered:

“What did you do?””

Walter answered.

“I helped him disappear.””

Everyone froze.

“But not because I wanted him gone.””

His voice cracked.

“Because I learned Patricia was willing to destroy anyone who threatened her.””

Patricia shook her head.

“You’re lying.””

The video continued.

“I helped Daniel escape with one condition.””

Walter looked directly into the camera.

“He had to leave Emily behind.””

My heart shattered.

“What?””

Ryan looked at me.

I couldn’t move.

Walter continued.

“I believed Patricia would stop searching if Daniel was gone. I believed Emily would be safer without knowing the truth.””

The room blurred.

My father hadn’t abandoned me.

Walter hadn’t stolen him from me.

They had both made choices.

Choices that hurt me.

Choices they believed were necessary.

But there was still one question.

The question that had haunted me my entire life.

Where was Daniel now?

The video suddenly changed.

A new clip appeared.

A man standing outside a building.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably him.

Daniel Cross.

He looked directly at the camera.

Then he spoke.

“If Emily is watching this, then Walter finally did the right thing.””

I stopped breathing.

My father was alive.

Daniel continued.

“I know you think I left you.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I need you to know the truth.””

He looked over his shoulder.

Then back at the camera.

“Your mother was not the only person hiding something.””

A pause.

“Neither was Walter.””

The screen flickered.

A message appeared.

*FILE INTERRUPTED.*

Mr. Harris looked at the watch.

“The recording was damaged.””

Everyone stared.

“What does that mean?”” Ryan asked.

The lawyer examined the device.

“It means there is another copy.””

“Where?””

Mr. Harris turned the watch over.

A second compartment opened.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

He unfolded it.

His face changed.

“What?””

Charlotte asked.

Mr. Harris slowly read the words.

Then he looked at me.

“Walter left the backup recording with someone he trusted.””

I felt cold.

“Who?””

The lawyer handed me the paper.

There was only one name written on it.

A name I had not heard since I was a child.

*Daniel Cross.*

And beneath it was a phone number.

May you like

With a message.

*Call before Patricia finds him first.*
