Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Final Lie

The phone slipped slightly in my hand.

For one terrifying second, I forgot how to breathe.

Daniel’s voice was still there.

“Emily?””

But I couldn’t answer.

Because every person in the room had suddenly become a stranger.

Ryan.

Charlotte.

Patricia.

Even Mr. Harris.

The house that had once felt familiar now felt like a trap.

The lights remained off.

The only illumination came from Mr. Harris’s phone flashlight, casting long shadows across the walls.

Walter’s portrait stared down at us.

The man who left clues.

The man who knew someone would betray him.

The man who knew someone in this room was dangerous.

Ryan moved closer.

“Emily, what did he say?””

I looked at him.

I wanted to trust him.

I needed to trust him.

But Daniel’s words echoed in my head.

*The person who killed Walter is standing in that room with you.*

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

Patricia let out a quiet laugh.

A cold, controlled laugh.

“You finally understand.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“Understand what?””

“That you never knew the people around you.””

She looked at me.

“You thought Walter was your protector.””

Her eyes moved to Ryan.

“You thought I was the villain.””

Then she smiled.

“But the truth is always more complicated.””

Charlotte stepped away from her mother.

“Stop talking like that.””

Patricia ignored her.

“Your father spent his whole life pretending he was the smartest person in every room.””

She looked at Walter’s portrait.

“But he never realized the person closest to him was the one watching.””

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

Mr. Harris raised his phone.

“Who is there?””

No answer.

Only footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching.

Ryan grabbed a nearby metal candle holder.

“Everyone stay back.””

I stared at him.

The same man who had failed to defend me earlier that night was now standing in front of me.

Protecting me.

Maybe because he finally understood.

Maybe because everything he believed had collapsed.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Ryan.””

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized it.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone we knew.

Someone who had been in this house all night.

Someone who had stood beside us while Walter’s secrets were revealed.

Charlotte whispered:

“No…”

The figure stepped into the light.

And everyone froze.

It was Marcus Whitaker.

Ryan’s uncle.

Walter’s younger brother.

I had met him only a few times over the years.

He was always quiet.

Always polite.

The type of person people forgot was in the room.

Until now.

Ryan lowered the candle holder slightly.

“Uncle Marcus?””

Marcus looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on the watch.

Then on the broken tablet.

Then finally on Patricia.

“You couldn’t keep quiet for one night.””

Patricia’s face changed.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You said you handled everything.””

Everyone heard it.

Everyone.

Ryan looked between them.

“Handled what?””

Marcus sighed.

Like he was tired of pretending.

“Your mother has always been emotional.””

Patricia laughed.

“Emotional?””

She stepped forward.

“You’re the one who told me Walter would never find out.””

The room became silent.

Ryan stared.

“What?””

Marcus looked at Patricia.

“You’re making this worse.””

“No.””

Her voice shook with rage.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Charlotte covered her mouth.

“Mom…”

Ryan looked at his uncle.

“Protecting him from what?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was all the confirmation we needed.

Mr. Harris slowly stepped forward.

“Marcus Whitaker.””

The man looked at him.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

The lawyer’s expression hardened.

“I think I know exactly what I’m involved in.””

He pointed toward the watch.

“Walter left evidence.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Walter always loved dramatic endings.””

Ryan looked at him.

“Did you kill my father?””

The question hung in the air.

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at Ryan.

And for a second, he almost looked sad.

Then he said:

“You really think everything is that simple?””

Ryan’s grip tightened.

“Answer me.””

Marcus walked further into the room.

“Your father was dying long before his heart stopped.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Walter spent years destroying everyone around him and then convinced himself he was the victim.””

I stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Emily.””

The way he said my name made my stomach twist.

“You have no idea what Walter did.””

“You knew my father.””

“Yes.””

The answer shocked me.

Marcus continued.

“I knew Daniel Cross.””

My heart raced.

“How?””

Marcus looked toward the phone still in my hand.

“Because Daniel was not just a man investigating Walter’s company.””

He paused.

“He was my friend.””

Nobody spoke.

I stared.

“Then why did Walter blame himself?””

Marcus smiled.

“Because guilt is easier than admitting the truth.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

He seemed exhausted.

“Every person in this room keeps saying someone else is lying.””

His voice broke.

“So who is telling the truth?””

Nobody answered.

Then the phone in my hand crackled.

Daniel’s voice came through.

“Emily.””

Everyone looked at it.

Marcus’s expression changed.

For the first time.

Fear.

“Who is on the phone?””

I stepped backward.

“My father.””

Marcus froze.

Daniel spoke again.

“Marcus.””

The room went silent.

The man standing in front of us stared at the phone.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel’s voice was cold.

“Yes.””

A long pause.

“And you know why.””

Marcus said nothing.

Ryan looked confused.

“You know each other?””

Daniel answered before Marcus could.

“Yes.””

His voice became heavier.

“Marcus was there the night I disappeared.””

My skin went cold.

Marcus looked away.

Patricia whispered:

“Daniel…”

Everyone turned.

The fact that she said his name like that revealed more than any confession.

Daniel continued.

“Tell Emily what happened.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“Tell her why you helped Patricia.””

The room froze.

Ryan looked at Marcus.

“You helped Mom?””

Marcus sighed.

“This is not how I wanted this to happen.””

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“Funny.””

He looked around.

“Nothing in this family ever happens the way people want.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Your father found evidence against Walter.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Daniel interrupted.

“No.””

His voice sharpened.

“Tell the truth.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Then he finally spoke.

“Daniel found evidence against me.””

Nobody moved.

Ryan whispered:

“Uncle Marcus?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I was the one taking money from Whitaker Industries.””

The room exploded.

Charlotte stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“Patricia found out.””

Ryan looked at his mother.

“And you helped him?””

Patricia’s face was empty.

“I didn’t have a choice.””

“You always say that.””

Ryan’s voice was full of pain.

“You always say you didn’t have a choice.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Daniel threatened to expose us.””

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“I threatened to tell the truth.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Walter discovered everything.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“And then?””

Marcus looked at the watch.

“He confronted me.””

Ryan whispered:

“What happened?””

Marcus was silent.

Too long.

Then he said:

“Your father had a heart attack.””

Everyone froze.

I stared.

“What?””

Marcus looked at me.

“I didn’t kill him.””

The words came quickly.

“I didn’t touch him.””

Daniel spoke.

“But you let him die.””

Marcus looked at the phone.

The accusation landed.

Marcus’s face changed.

Because it was true.

“What happened that night?”” Mr. Harris asked.

Marcus looked toward Walter’s portrait.

“I found him in his office.””

His voice became quieter.

“He was on the floor.””

Ryan looked sick.

“You found Dad?””

Marcus nodded.

“He was alive.””

Nobody breathed.

“Then why didn’t you call an ambulance?””

Marcus looked away.

That was the answer.

Charlotte started crying.

“Oh my God.””

Marcus whispered:

“Because Walter had already sent the evidence.””

Ryan stared.

“What evidence?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The evidence that would destroy everyone involved.””

My heart stopped.

“Everyone?””

Marcus nodded.

“Your mother. Me.””

He paused.

“And someone else.””

Mr. Harris frowned.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Toward the place where Patricia had pushed me.

Then he said:

“Someone Walter never suspected.””

The room went silent.

Ryan looked around.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he pointed at the watch.

“There’s one more recording.””

Mr. Harris grabbed it.

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

His face became serious.

“The final recording was not made for the police.””

He looked at me.

“It was made for Emily.””

I felt cold.

“Why me?””

Marcus stared.

“Because Walter discovered the truth about why Daniel disappeared.””

A pause.

“And because he realized the person behind everything had been watching you your entire life.””

The watch beeped.

Everyone froze.

A hidden file appeared on the screen.

No title.

No date.

Only one name.

*EMILY.*

Mr. Harris pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then Walter’s voice whispered:

“Emily, if you are watching this, I need you to understand one thing.””

A pause.

“I was wrong about who the enemy was.””

My heart raced.

Then Walter said:

“The person who betrayed Daniel…”

The video flickered.

A face appeared.

And everyone in the room gasped.

May you like

Because the person on the screen was the last person anyone expected.

Ryan.
