Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The sound of the front door opening traveled through the house like a warning.

A slow creak.

A quiet step.

Then another.

Someone was inside.

The police officers immediately moved toward the staircase.

“Everyone stay here,” one officer ordered.

Daniel grabbed my hand.

Not because he was trying to control me.

Because he was afraid.

For me.

For our daughter.

For everything we had just learned.

Ethan moved in front of us instinctively.

The gesture surprised me.

A few hours ago, he had been a stranger.

Now he was standing between my family and danger.

The officer reached the bottom of the stairs.

“Police department. Identify yourself.””

No answer.

Just another footstep.

Then a man’s voice echoed through the house.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

Everyone froze.

Because we knew that voice.

Richard.

Daniel looked at the phone still connected.

“He was on the call.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Come into view slowly.””

A man appeared in the doorway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But alive.

Very much alive.

Daniel stared.

“I know you.””

The man looked at him.

A sad smile appeared.

“You should.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Uncle Richard?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Sophie whispered:

“You’re alive.””

Richard looked around.

“I know.””

His eyes moved to Evelyn.

“And I know I should have come sooner.””

Evelyn looked away.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You let everyone believe you were dead.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard looked at the hidden room.

“Because your father asked me to.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“My father asked me. My father wanted this. My father protected me.””

He pointed toward the hidden documents.

“But nobody protected Ethan.””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised everyone.

Daniel looked at him.

“You admit it?””

“I should have done more.””

Ethan stared at Richard.

“Why didn’t you?””

Richard looked at him.

And for the first time, Ethan saw something he had been searching for his entire life.

Regret.

“Because I was a coward.””

The answer was so simple that it hurt.

Richard walked closer.

“I found out what happened after it was already done.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Thirty years later?””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing?””

Richard looked away.

“I tried.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Try harder.””

Nobody spoke.

Because there was nothing to defend.

Richard looked at me.

“Claire.””

I stepped back slightly.

“How do you know me?””

He took a deep breath.

“Because your father trusted me with your safety.””

“My father?””

Richard nodded.

“Thomas Reed.””

My heart tightened.

The name that had followed us through every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

“You said he was alive.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“He was.””

Daniel frowned.

“Was?””

Richard looked at him.

“Until tonight.””

The room went cold.

“What does that mean?”” Sophie asked.

Richard looked toward the front door.

“He came here.””

Nobody moved.

“Thomas came here?””

Richard nodded.

“He knew the truth was about to come out.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where is he?””

Richard hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

“He’s close.””

The police officers exchanged looks.

One of them asked:

“Are you saying there is another person involved?””

Richard looked at him.

“I’m saying there has always been another person involved.””

He walked toward the hidden room.

His eyes landed on the documents.

“Your father kept everything here.””

Daniel looked at the boxes.

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone would eventually come looking.””

Richard picked up a folder.

“He knew Evelyn would try to control the story.””

Evelyn looked angry.

“I was trying to protect my family.””

Richard turned toward her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You were trying to protect your version of your family.””

That hurt because it was true.

Evelyn looked down.

Richard opened the folder.

Inside was another photograph.

He handed it to Daniel.

Daniel looked.

Then his expression changed.

“What is this?””

Ethan moved closer.

The picture showed three people.

A young Thomas Reed.

Evelyn.

And a woman I recognized immediately.

My mother.

My breath caught.

“Why are they together?””

Richard looked at me.

“Because they were all involved.””

My voice shook.

“My mother?””

Richard nodded.

“She discovered what happened with the twins.””

Daniel looked at the picture.

“She knew my father?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard sighed.

“Thomas and your father were friends before they became enemies.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard continued.

“Your father hired Thomas as his lawyer because he trusted him.””

He looked at the photograph.

“But Thomas became obsessed with proving that the hospital records were wrong.””

Ethan frowned.

“Why?””

Richard looked at him.

“Because Thomas believed the wrong child had been taken away.””

A chill moved through me.

“What child?””

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Daniel.””

Nobody moved.

Richard continued.

“Thomas believed Daniel was the child who had been hidden.””

Daniel shook his head.

“But I was raised by my parents.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

“Because Thomas discovered something.””

Richard opened another document.

“This.””

Daniel took it.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then he looked up.

“What is this?””

Richard answered:

“A genetic report from the day you were born.””

Ethan stared.

“But there was only one test.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

My heart raced.

“There were two.””

He looked at me.

“One was buried.””

I stepped closer.

“What did it say?””

Richard’s eyes became serious.

“It said the twins had matching markers.””

Daniel frowned.

“Meaning?””

Richard looked at Ethan.

“Meaning both children carried the same rare genetic trait.””

Silence.

Then he looked at me.

“And that trait was passed to Claire.””

My stomach tightened.

“My daughter.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“So Evelyn separated us for nothing?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because everyone already knew.

Thirty years.

Two brothers.

Two lives.

Destroyed by fear.

Then Ethan looked at Richard.

“Why did Thomas want Claire’s baby?””

Richard looked down.

“Because he discovered something about the trait.””

“What?””

Richard’s expression changed.

“It wasn’t dangerous.””

Everyone stared.

“It was valuable.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What do you mean valuable?””

Richard looked at the papers.

“The genetic marker wasn’t linked to illness.””

“Then what was it linked to?””

Richard looked at me.

“Memory.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The ability to identify altered DNA records.””

Nobody understood.

Richard explained.

“Your daughter’s DNA can prove when genetic records have been changed.””

Ethan looked at him.

“So she can expose what happened.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

Sophie whispered:

“That’s why they wanted her gone.””

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“Yes.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I didn’t know.””

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

“I swear.””

I felt anger rise.

“You didn’t know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought the baby would expose us.””

Daniel stared.

“Us?””

Evelyn froze.

Too late.

Everyone heard it.

Richard looked at her.

“You just admitted it.””

The room went silent.

Then a crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

The police officers moved immediately.

Someone was running.

Richard’s face changed.

“He’s here.””

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“Who?””

Richard looked toward the stairs.

“The man who started all of this.””

Footsteps rushed upward.

Then a figure appeared.

Older.

Calm.

Holding a folder.

Everyone froze.

Because the face was familiar.

Not like Ethan and Daniel.

Different.

But familiar.

Richard whispered:

“Thomas.””

The man smiled.

After thirty years of being declared dead…

Thomas Reed had finally returned.

And he looked directly at me.

“Claire.””

My blood ran cold.

“I’m sorry it took so long.””

He lifted the folder.

“But I brought proof.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Proof of what?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Proof that your mother didn’t separate the twins.””

Silence.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“She separated the wrong person.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Thomas smiled.

“And proof that the man you call your father…”

May you like

He paused.

“Was never Daniel’s father at all.””
