Chapter 7: The Twin Who Was Chosen
The woman’s words silenced the entire house.
Everyone had a theory.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had spent years protecting something.
But nobody was prepared for the possibility that they had protected the wrong person.
Daniel stared at the woman standing near the doorway.
“Who are you?””
She held the envelope against her chest.
“My name is Laura Collins.””
Ethan looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Collins?””
She nodded.
“I’m Margaret’s younger sister.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“You knew her?””
Laura smiled sadly.
“She was my sister.””
Her eyes moved toward him.
“And she loved you more than anyone in this world.””
Ethan looked away.
For the first time since he entered the house, he looked vulnerable.
Not like a man searching for revenge.
Like a child still waiting for someone to choose him.
Daniel noticed.
And I think that was the first moment he truly saw his brother.
Not as a threat.
Not as a stranger.
As family.
Laura looked around the room.
“Where is Evelyn?””
Nobody answered.
Because Evelyn was standing right there.
But she looked like she wished she could disappear.
Laura’s eyes found her.
“So you finally admitted it.””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
Laura gave a small, bitter smile.
“Your favorite sentence.””
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Everyone turned.
His voice was calm.
But something inside him had changed.
“I want the truth.””
Laura looked at him.
“You deserve it.””
She opened the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten letter.
Old.
Carefully folded.
“My sister wrote this two days before she died.””
Ethan’s eyes immediately moved to the paper.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Laura looked at him.
“Because she told me not to.””
Ethan froze.
“What?””
“She said you weren’t ready.””
He laughed quietly.
“After thirty years, I wasn’t ready?””
Laura looked down.
“She was afraid the truth would destroy you.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“The truth already destroyed me.””
Nobody spoke.
Laura unfolded the letter.
“I’ll read only what matters.””
She took a breath.
Then began.
“Ethan, if you are hearing this, it means the people who tried to erase you failed.””
The room went silent.
“Your brother was not the child who needed saving.””
Daniel looked up.
Laura continued.
“He was the child they were afraid of losing.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
Daniel whispered:
“What does that mean?””
Laura looked at him.
“It means your father knew the truth.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“My father loved me.””
Laura nodded.
“He did.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why?””
“Because he loved both of you.””
The answer seemed to hurt him more.
Laura continued reading.
“Your father discovered that the hospital records had been altered.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“Altered by who?””
Laura looked at Evelyn.
Nobody needed an answer.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“Mom.””
Evelyn didn’t respond.
Laura continued.
“Someone changed the medical information. Someone made it appear that Ethan was the child with the genetic risk.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“But that wasn’t true.””
Laura shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Ethan.
“The condition was never about him.””
Ethan stared.
“Then who?””
Laura looked at Daniel.
“The other twin.””
The room exploded into silence.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
Sophie grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“That’s impossible.””
Laura’s expression softened.
“I know this is hard.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Then why am I healthy?””
“Because the marker does not guarantee illness.””
Laura looked at the papers.
“It only showed a possibility.””
My heart sank.
A possibility.
Thirty years of separation.
A lifetime stolen.
All because of fear.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You sent him away because of a possibility?””
Evelyn whispered:
“I was scared.””
Daniel laughed.
A painful laugh.
“You were scared?””
His eyes filled with tears.
“You were scared, so you gave away your child?””
Evelyn looked like she wanted to answer.
But she couldn’t.
Because there was no answer that could fix what happened.
Ethan stared at the floor.
“So all these years…”
His voice cracked.
“I was the healthy one.””
Nobody moved.
“I spent my entire life thinking I was unwanted because something was wrong with me.””
Laura stepped closer.
“Ethan…”
He shook his head.
“No.””
He wiped his face quickly.
“No, I need to understand.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“Did you ever look for me?””
Evelyn’s lips trembled.
“Yes.””
Ethan froze.
“When?””
“Many times.””
“Then why didn’t you come?””
Evelyn looked down.
“Because every time I got close, I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Her answer was barely audible.
“That I would lose Daniel.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And you lost both of us.””
That sentence broke something in Evelyn.
She sat down.
For the first time, she looked like a mother who understood what she had done.
Not a woman defending herself.
A mother facing the damage.
Then Laura turned toward me.
“Claire.””
I looked at her.
“Yes?””
“There’s something you need to know.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
She glanced at Daniel.
Then Ethan.
“The reason your daughter matters is not because of the genetic marker.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Laura held the letter.
“Your baby carries something else.””
I looked down at my stomach.
“What?””
“The bloodline.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What bloodline?””
Laura hesitated.
Then said:
“Thomas Reed wasn’t only your father’s lawyer.””
Daniel froze.
“He was my father’s lawyer.””
Laura nodded.
“He was also your mother’s brother.””
I stopped breathing.
“My mother’s…”
“Your uncle.””
The room spun.
I grabbed the back of a chair.
“No.””
Laura continued gently.
“Your mother discovered what happened with the twins.””
I shook my head.
“She knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Laura looked at Evelyn.
“Because she made the same mistake Evelyn did.””
“What mistake?””
“Trying to protect you by controlling the truth.””
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Everyone had been protecting me.
Everyone had been lying to me.
And somehow those two things had become impossible to separate.
Laura handed me the letter.
“This was also meant for you.””
My hands shook as I took it.
“There’s a letter from my mother?””
Laura nodded.
“She asked Margaret to keep it hidden until the right time.””
I opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother’s.
The first line made my heart stop.
*My darling Claire, if you are reading this, it means Evelyn failed to stop the truth from reaching you.*
I looked up.
Evelyn looked away.
I continued reading.
*I’m sorry I left you with questions. I’m sorry I made you believe your past was simple. It was never simple.*
My eyes blurred.
*Your father discovered something dangerous. He discovered that the people around him had changed hospital records and hidden a child.*
I looked at Daniel and Ethan.
*He wanted to expose them.*
A cold chill moved through me.
*But before he could, someone made sure he disappeared.*
I stopped.
My heart raced.
Daniel noticed.
“What?””
I couldn’t answer.
Laura’s expression changed.
I looked back down.
*Claire, the man you know as your father was not the only person who protected you. There was another man who sacrificed everything to keep you safe.*
My hands trembled.
*His name was Ethan Hayes.*
I looked up.
Ethan stared at me.
“No.””
I kept reading.
*If you ever meet him, tell him I’m sorry. Tell him he was never abandoned. He was stolen.*
Ethan looked away.
And for the first time, I saw tears in his eyes.
Then I reached the final line.
The line that made the entire room stop.
*Claire, the reason Evelyn will do anything to stop your daughter from being born is because your baby is the first person in thirty years who can prove what really happened.*
I lowered the letter.
Daniel looked at me.
“What does that mean?””
Before anyone could answer, Laura spoke.
“It means your daughter’s DNA can reveal who changed the records.””
Sophie frowned.
“How?””
Laura looked toward the window.
“Because the person who altered everything left behind one mistake.””
The room went quiet.
“What mistake?”” Daniel asked.
Laura’s eyes moved to my stomach.
“They used DNA from someone who wasn’t supposed to exist.””
A horrible realization passed over Ethan’s face.
“Someone like me.””
Laura nodded.
“Yes.””
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared.
I answered slowly.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Older.
Calm.
Familiar.
A voice I had heard before.
My blood froze.
Because I recognized it.
“Claire.””
I couldn’t speak.
The man continued:
“You need to listen carefully.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Who is it?””
I put the phone on speaker.
The voice said:
“Your father didn’t disappear.””
The room went silent.
Then the man whispered:
“He was murdered because he found out who really separated the twins.””
Everyone looked at Evelyn.
But the voice wasn’t finished.
“And Claire…”
A pause.
“Your father left one final piece of evidence.””
My hands shook.
“Where?””
The man answered:
“Inside your mother-in-law’s house.””
Every face turned toward Evelyn.
And she whispered:
May you like
“No.””
Because she knew exactly what was hidden there.
