Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in My Daughter’s Blood
The voicemail ended.
But nobody moved.
The woman’s voice remained in my head.
Not because it was loud.
Not because it was threatening.
Because it sounded like someone who had been waiting years to finally tell the truth.
Claire’s baby isn’t just connected to Daniel and Ethan.
She is connected to the reason they were separated in the first place.
I looked down at my stomach.
My daughter.
My little girl who had kicked every night when I sang to her.
My baby who had no idea that the adults around her were fighting over secrets she never asked to inherit.
Daniel stared at me.
“What does that mean?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
But even as I said it, I knew that wasn’t completely true.
Because a small part of me did know.
A small part of me had always known Ethan’s story was bigger than one missing brother.
Bigger than one family secret.
There were things Ethan had never been able to explain.
Things that had always felt strange.
Like why certain records disappeared.
Why certain people panicked when his name appeared.
Why every answer led to another question.
Evelyn suddenly stood.
“Give me the phone.””
Nobody moved.
Her eyes sharpened.
“Claire.””
I had never heard my name sound like a warning before.
“No.””
The word came out before I could think.
Evelyn froze.
“No?””
I held my phone closer.
“You know who that was.””
Her silence told me everything.
Daniel noticed too.
“Mom.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Daniel, you need to understand—”
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“I need you to answer one question.””
She stared at him.
“Who was that?””
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who was that woman?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Ethan quietly said:
“Margaret.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Margaret Collins.””
My heart stopped.
The name sounded familiar.
Because it was the name Ethan had mentioned earlier.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who told him he was found outside a hospital.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“She’s alive?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“She was.””
The room became colder.
“What does that mean?”” Sophie asked.
Ethan looked down.
“She died three months ago.””
I stared at him.
“You never told me.””
“I didn’t know how.””
His voice softened.
“Margaret spent her entire life protecting me. But before she died, she left me a box.””
He opened the folder he was carrying.
“I found letters.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Letters from who?””
Ethan looked at Evelyn.
“From your mother.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
Ethan pulled out several papers.
Old letters.
Yellowed with age.
“I found them hidden in Margaret’s house.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You shouldn’t have them.””
Ethan looked at her.
“That’s exactly why I needed them.””
Daniel grabbed the papers.
His hands trembled as he read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
I watched his expression change.
Confusion.
Shock.
Then something that looked like betrayal.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“What is this?””
Evelyn whispered:
“Daniel.””
He held up the letter.
“You wrote to her.””
Silence.
“You wrote to the woman who raised my brother.””
Ethan looked away.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“You knew where he was.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed something in him.
Sophie covered her mouth.
“You knew all these years?””
Evelyn didn’t respond.
“You knew he was alive?””
A tear rolled down Evelyn’s face.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped backward.
I had never seen him look at his mother that way.
Not angry.
Not hateful.
Just devastated.
“How could you?””
Evelyn wiped her face.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Stop saying that.””
His voice rose.
“Stop using those words to excuse everything.””
Evelyn flinched.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“Then make me understand.””
She looked at Ethan.
And for a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said:
“Your brother was dangerous.””
Everyone went silent.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
Ethan laughed quietly.
“That’s what she told everyone.””
He looked at Daniel.
“She made me the monster.””
Evelyn pointed at him.
“You don’t know what you are.””
The room went still.
Daniel stared at her.
“Mom.””
But Ethan didn’t look angry.
He looked hurt.
“I spent my entire life wondering why nobody wanted me.””
His voice became quieter.
“Why my own parents disappeared.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“Why you erased me.””
Evelyn looked away.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell it.””
She didn’t.
And that silence was enough.
Daniel walked toward the table and picked up the hospital documents again.
“There’s something here.””
Everyone looked at him.
He turned the paper around.
“The medical issue.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What about it?””
Daniel’s eyes moved across the page.
“It says the baby had a genetic marker.””
Ethan frowned.
“What?””
Daniel read further.
“It says doctors recommended additional testing.””
I felt a strange feeling in my chest.
A connection I couldn’t explain.
“Daniel…”
He looked at me.
“Claire.””
His voice was different.
“Why does this hospital record mention our family?””
I stared at the paper.
“I don’t know.””
But Ethan suddenly stepped forward.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He pointed at the document.
“Read the date.””
Daniel looked.
Then his face changed.
“This was the same week…”
He stopped.
Ethan finished the sentence.
“The same week Margaret found me.””
My heart started racing.
Sophie looked between them.
“Why would Claire’s baby be connected to something that happened thirty years ago?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan looked at me.
“Because your daughter’s DNA is showing something that shouldn’t exist.””
I felt sick.
“What does that mean?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“When the first test came back, I didn’t only see Daniel’s connection.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What else did you see?””
Ethan reached into his folder one more time.
This time, he pulled out a printed genetic report.
My name was at the top.
My hands went cold.
“What is that?””
Ethan looked at me.
“I ran a comparison.””
“You tested my DNA?””
“No.””
His expression softened.
“I tested mine against the sample from the baby.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
Daniel looked at him.
“Why would you do that?””
Ethan looked down.
“Because I suspected something.””
Nobody spoke.
Then he handed the paper to me.
I looked at the results.
I didn’t understand every number.
But I understood the words.
*Genetic relationship confirmed.*
I looked up.
“No.””
Ethan whispered:
“Yes.””
Daniel took the paper.
His eyes moved across it.
Then he looked at me.
“Claire…”
I couldn’t speak.
Because the impossible was sitting in front of us.
The baby wasn’t only connected to Daniel.
She wasn’t only connected to Ethan.
There was another connection.
One that made no sense.
Sophie read over Daniel’s shoulder.
Then she stepped back.
“Oh my God.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“She’s related to him.””
I looked at Ethan.
My voice barely worked.
“Related how?””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Evelyn.
Because he already knew.
He knew exactly why she had tried to destroy me.
Why she wanted the baby shower ruined.
Why she wanted Daniel to believe the worst.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“Because your daughter carries the same rare genetic marker that separated us.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan’s eyes met mine.
“I’m saying someone in your family knew about this before we did.””
A horrible realization passed through the room.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
Evelyn said nothing.
“Mom, what did you know?””
Her face crumpled.
And then, for the first time that night, she stopped fighting.
She whispered:
“Claire was never supposed to marry you.””
My heart stopped.
Daniel froze.
“What?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“She was never supposed to become part of this family.””
I took a step back.
“Why?””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because years ago…”
She swallowed.
“I met Claire’s mother.””
Nobody moved.
The room went silent.
“My mother?”” I whispered.
Evelyn nodded.
“And she made me promise something.””
Daniel stared.
“What promise?””
Evelyn looked at my stomach.
At my unborn daughter.
Then she said:
“That if Claire ever had a child…”
May you like
Her voice broke.
“I would make sure the child never carried our family’s secret into the world.””
