Chapter 8: The Secret My Mother Buried
I stared at the message until the screen went dark.
*Ask your mother.*
Four words.
That was all.
But they carried the weight of ten years of unanswered questions.
My mother.
The person I hadn’t thought about in months.
The person who had disappeared from every conversation the moment my father left.
The person who had always told me one thing:
“Your father made his choices.””
I had believed her.
Because I needed someone to blame.
Because anger was easier than confusion.
But now, standing in my attic with my father’s journal in my hands, I wondered if I had spent years believing the wrong story.
Again.
My mother answered on the fourth ring.
“Claire?””
Her voice sounded tired.
Older.
I closed my eyes.
“Mom.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
The question was immediate.
Like she could hear something in my voice.
“I need to ask you about Dad.””
The silence that followed was different from all the others.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“Why?””
I looked down at the journal.
“Because I found something.””
“What did you find?””
“Something about Lily.””
The line went completely quiet.
And in that moment, I knew.
She knew.
My mother knew something.
“Mom?””
“Where are you?””
“Home.””
“I’m coming over.””
The urgency in her voice made my stomach tighten.
“Mom—”
“I said I’m coming over.””
Then she hung up.
She arrived thirty minutes later.
Not walking.
Running.
I had never seen my mother move like that.
She stepped inside, looked around the house, and immediately locked the door.
That alone scared me.
My mother was not someone who panicked.
Ever.
“What is happening?””
I held up the journal.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her eyes went to the cover.
Then she looked away.
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“I’m done being the last person to know what’s happening in my own life.””
She sat down slowly.
“You deserve the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s what everyone says right before they tell me another secret.””
She accepted that.
Because she knew it was true.
For a moment, she just looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Your father didn’t leave because he stopped loving us.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“I know.””
Her eyes widened.
“You know?””
“Some of it.””
I placed the journal on the table.
“Start talking.””
My mother took a deep breath.
“Ten years ago, your father discovered something about Daniel.””
I froze.
“Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“But Daniel and I weren’t even married yet.””
“I know.””
“What did Dad find?””
She looked toward the window.
“Your father worked with investments. He noticed unusual transfers connected to one of Daniel’s early business partners.””
“The missing money?””
She nodded.
“Your father realized someone was moving money through different accounts to hide where it came from.””
“Why would Daniel be involved?””
“He wasn’t at first.””
That surprised me.
“At first?””
My mother looked at me.
“Claire, your father believed Daniel was being used.””
I frowned.
“By who?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she asked:
“Do you remember Daniel’s first business partner?””
I thought back.
A name appeared.
“Marcus?””
She nodded.
entity["people"," very good at making people believe what he wanted.””
I felt like I was watching my entire past rearrange itself.
Every memory.
Every assumption.
Every person I had trusted.
“What does this have to do with Lily’s account?””
My mother looked down.
“That account wasn’t created because of money.””
“Then why?””
“Because your father wanted something protected.””
“What?””
“Evidence.””
The word hung in the air.
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything.””
I frowned.
“He put evidence in Lily’s account?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“He put a trail there.””
I didn’t understand.
My mother continued.
“Your father knew if he stored information under his own name, it would disappear.””
“So he used Lily?””
“No.””
Her voice became firm.
“He used a system Daniel created.””
I stared at her.
“Daniel created it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel thought he was protecting his family.””
The words were almost impossible to accept.
Daniel.
Protecting.
Family.
The same man who had stood in our living room and said he didn’t want our daughter.
But now I knew there was something I still didn’t understand.
“What happened between Daniel and Dad?””
My mother’s face changed.
“He found out Daniel was being forced into something.””
“Forced by who?””
She looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I immediately called Daniel.
He answered after one ring.
“Claire.””
“Marcus Hale.””
Silence.
Not long.
But enough.
“You know that name.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“I didn’t want you involved.””
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s your excuse?””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“It’s the truth.””
I walked around the kitchen.
“My father said you were being used.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Your father was right.””
The admission shocked me.
“Then why did you let me hate you?””
“Because hate was safer.””
“For who?””
“For Lily.””
I stopped.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Explain.””
Daniel took a breath.
“Marcus had access to everything.””
“Everything?””
“My company. My accounts. My employees.””
“And my family?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“How?””
“Because he knew you.””
“How?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Because he was connected to your family before I ever met you.””
The room went still.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel’s voice became lower.
“Claire, Marcus wasn’t just my business partner.””
I waited.
“He was your mother’s brother.””
I couldn’t move.
“My mother’s…”
The words wouldn’t come out.
“Brother?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
Daniel sighed.
“I know.””
“My mother never had a brother.””
“She told everyone that.””
I looked toward the living room.
Where my mother was sitting.
Where she was waiting.
Another secret.
Another person who knew.
I felt anger rising.
“Everyone knew except me.””
“Claire—”
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You all decided what I could handle.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“That’s exactly what happened.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said something softer.
“I was trying to keep Lily alive.””
The anger stopped.
“What?””
“Claire…”
His voice cracked.
“Marcus wasn’t after money.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Then what was he after?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
When he did, his voice was barely above a whisper.
“Control.””
That night, my mother finally told me everything.
Not everything about money.
Not everything about business.
Everything about family.
Marcus had spent years rebuilding relationships.
Making himself useful.
Making himself trusted.
He helped my mother financially after my grandmother died.
He helped my father with investments.
He became the person everyone turned to.
Including me.
I remembered.
The gifts.
The advice.
The way he always called me “kiddo.””
The way he smiled at Lily.
The way he held her when she was a baby.
My stomach twisted.
“Does he know about Lily’s account?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She looked away.
And that was when I understood.
There was only one answer.
“He was there when it was created.””
My mother whispered:
“He helped set it up.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
“Claire…”
“No.””
Because suddenly the biggest question wasn’t who betrayed me.
It was why.
Why would someone who had known Lily since birth want to destroy her future?
Then my phone buzzed.
Another unknown message.
This time, there was a photo attached.
I opened it.
And my blood ran cold.
It was a picture of Lily.
At school.
Taken that same day.
Underneath was one sentence.
*Stop searching, or your daughter loses everything.*
I dropped the phone.
Because the person behind all of this wasn’t hiding anymore.
May you like
They were watching us.
And they had just threatened my child.
