Chapter 6: The Lie Behind the Lie

For the first time in weeks, I didn’t know what to believe.

That was the most terrifying part.

Not the hidden accounts.

Not the fake signatures.

Not the people who had betrayed me.

It was the possibility that I had been wrong about everything.

I sat on the edge of my bed until sunrise, staring at the phone in my hand.

My father’s voice kept replaying in my head.

*Daniel didn’t abandon Lily.*

The sentence should have made me angry.

It should have felt impossible.

Because I had watched Daniel look at our daughter and say he didn’t want her.

I had heard him choose money over his own child.

But now there was a tiny crack in the story.

And once a crack appears, everything starts to fall apart.

The next morning, Lily found me sitting at the kitchen table.

She climbed into the chair beside me.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

“Yeah?””

“Are we still moving?””

I blinked.

“What?””

She played with the edge of her sleeve.

“Daddy said we might have to move.””

My stomach tightened.

“When did he say that?””

“Last week.””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“What else did Daddy say?””

She looked nervous.

“I’m not supposed to tell you.””

My heart sank.

“Why not?””

“He said grown-up things are complicated.””

I closed my eyes.

Daniel.

Always controlling the story.

Always deciding what people knew.

“What did he tell you, Lily?””

She looked down.

“He said sometimes people have to make choices they don’t like.””

My chest tightened.

“Did he say he didn’t want you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said…”

She swallowed.

“He said he loved me.””

The room went silent.

I stared at my daughter.

“Lily, when did he say that?””

“Yesterday.””

“Yesterday?””

She nodded.

“He called me before bed.””

My mind raced.

Why would Daniel tell Lily he loved her while telling me he wanted nothing to do with her?

Why would he reject custody publicly but still call her privately?

Unless…

Unless the story was more complicated than I knew.

I called Daniel.

He answered after the second ring.

“Claire.””

His voice was cautious.

“Did you call Lily last night?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The question sounded strange even to me.

Because I wasn’t asking why he called his daughter.

I was asking why he was acting like two different people.

“Because she’s my daughter.””

I gripped the phone.

“That’s interesting.””

“What’s that supposed to mean?””

“It means you told me you didn’t want her.””

Silence.

Then his voice became lower.

“You don’t know what you heard.””

I stood up.

“I was sitting three feet away from you.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“You were sitting three feet away from what you thought you understood.””

The words made me angry.

“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””

“I’m not rewriting anything.””

“Then explain it.””

Another silence.

A longer one.

Then he said:

“I was trying to keep Lily safe.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By walking away?””

“By making sure she wasn’t dragged into something worse.””

“What something?””

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to protect me anymore. You lost that right.””

He exhaled.

“I know.””

That surprised me.

Daniel admitting something felt unnatural.

“I know I hurt you.””

I looked out the window.

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because if I tell you everything, they’ll know you know.””

My blood ran cold.

“They?””

He immediately became quiet.

Too quiet.

“Daniel.””

No answer.

“Who are they?””

The line went silent.

Then he said:

“Ask your father.””

And he hung up.

Two hours later, my father called again.

This time, I answered.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere safe.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

“It’s not supposed to.””

I closed my eyes.

“I need the truth.””

“You’re finally asking the right person.””

I hated how much that sounded like him.

“Did you steal from us?””

A long silence followed.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Almost too quickly.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why is your name connected to the accounts?””

“Because Daniel used me.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“Because I knew where the money was.””

I sat down.

“What money?””

“Claire…”

His voice changed.

The confident voice disappeared.

The voice of my father from my childhood came through.

The scared one.

“The money wasn’t from your daughter’s account.””

“What?””

“It was moved into it.””

I stopped.

“Explain.””

“Daniel was trying to hide money from someone who was watching him.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

I heard him sigh.

“But I know one thing.””

“What?””

“Daniel was never trying to steal Lily’s future.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Then why did he say he didn’t want her?””

My father was quiet.

Then:

“Because he knew they were watching.””

I met Daniel at a small café outside town.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

He arrived ten minutes late.

That alone told me something.

Daniel was never late.

Not unless something was wrong.

He sat across from me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“You talked to your father.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stared at him.

“How did you know?””

“Because you’re here.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you finally know enough to ask questions.””

I hated that he sounded almost relieved.

“Start talking.””

He looked down at the table.

“I found out something about my company.””

“The missing money?””

He nodded.

“How much?””

“More than you know.””

“And my father?””

“Your father helped me trace it.””

I stared at him.

“You worked with my father?””

“Yes.””

“For how long?””

“Almost a year.””

I laughed.

“A year?””

“Yes.””

“While pretending to hate each other?””

Daniel looked away.

“We needed people to believe we weren’t connected.””

I felt anger rise.

“You made me think you abandoned Lily.””

His face changed.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you didn’t love her.””

“I know.””

“Do you understand what that did to her?””

His eyes filled with something I hadn’t seen in a long time.

Pain.

“I thought about her every day.””

“Then why?””

He swallowed.

“Because someone was watching our family.””

The words sounded ridiculous.

Except now?

Nothing sounded impossible anymore.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel.””

“I’m serious.””

He leaned forward.

“The person behind this is someone close.””

My stomach tightened.

“Rachel?””

“No.””

“Emily?””

“No.””

“Rebecca?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“Then who?””

He looked at me.

And for the first time, Daniel looked afraid.

“Someone who has access to your entire life.””

The answer terrified me.

Because there were very few people who fit that description.

“Someone who knows your schedule.””

I listened.

“Someone who knows Lily.””

My hands went cold.

“Someone who knows your finances.””

I whispered:

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

Then back at me.

“I think you already know.””

That night, I returned home and checked every room.

Not because I thought someone was inside.

Because I was finally seeing what I had ignored.

The details.

The small things.

The moments that didn’t make sense.

Then I noticed something.

The drawer beside my desk was slightly open.

I always closed it.

Inside were old documents.

Photos.

Letters.

Nothing unusual.

Except one thing.

A small voice recorder.

I had never seen it before.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

There was one file.

Recorded three months earlier.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard voices.

Daniel.

And another person.

A woman.

“Are you sure she won’t find out?””

Daniel answered:

“She trusts you.””

The woman laughed softly.

“She trusts everyone.””

My heart started pounding.

Because I knew that voice.

I knew it before the recording revealed her name.

Then Daniel said:

“If Claire finds out the truth, everything falls apart.””

The woman answered:

“Don’t worry. By then, she’ll think she’s the one who destroyed her own family.””

The recording ended.

I stood frozen.

Because the person I trusted most had just confirmed the one thing I never wanted to believe.

The enemy had never been outside my family.

The enemy had been standing beside me.

And then my phone received a message.

One sentence.

May you like

One name.

*I know you heard the recording. — Rachel*
