Chapter 9: The Last Move
The picture of Lily stayed on my phone screen.
I couldn’t look away.
Not because I didn’t believe the threat.
Because I did.
The person who sent it wanted me afraid.
They wanted me to stop asking questions.
They wanted me to go back to being the woman who trusted everyone and questioned nothing.
But they made one mistake.
They threatened the one person I would never stop fighting for.
My daughter.
I picked up the phone and called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Claire?””
“He knows.””
A pause.
“Who?””
“Marcus.””
Silence.
Then Daniel’s breathing changed.
“What happened?””
“He sent me a picture of Lily.””
The silence that followed was different.
Not hesitation.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Claire, listen to me carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“You need to take Lily somewhere safe.””
“I’m not running.””
“This isn’t about running.””
“Then what is it about?””
His voice dropped.
“It’s about staying alive long enough to prove the truth.””
I looked at the photo again.
The anger inside me burned hotter than the fear.
“No.””
“Claire.””
“No more hiding.””
I heard him exhale.
“You don’t understand what Marcus does.””
“Then tell me.””
A long pause.
Finally, he said:
“He doesn’t destroy people directly.””
“Then how?””
“He makes them destroy themselves.””
Daniel came to my house twenty minutes later.
For the first time since our marriage ended, I saw something familiar in his face.
Not arrogance.
Not confidence.
Guilt.
He stood in the doorway.
“I’m sorry.””
Two words.
Simple.
But they carried years behind them.
I didn’t move.
“Sorry for what?””
“For making you believe I didn’t want Lily.””
My jaw tightened.
“You did say it.””
“I know.””
“You looked at her.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“You saw your own daughter sitting there, scared, and you still said it.””
“I had to.””
The anger returned.
“No.””
His face tightened.
“You think I don’t hate myself for that?””
I looked away.
“Then why?””
“Because Marcus was watching.””
“Watching what?””
“Everything.””
He stepped inside.
“He knew I loved Lily. He knew hurting her was the easiest way to control me.””
I stared at him.
“So you hurt her first.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I made the hardest choice I’ve ever made.””
“You call that a choice?””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“I call it the thing I regret every single day.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Because the painful truth was this:
Daniel had hurt us.
But maybe he had also been fighting something I couldn’t see.
And I hated that both things could be true.
We sat at the kitchen table.
The same table where our marriage had fallen apart.
The same place where he demanded everything.
Now, he finally told me the truth.
“Marcus started controlling my company two years ago.””
“How?””
“He had investors. Connections. Information.””
“And you let him?””
“I didn’t know at first.””
He rubbed his face.
“When I realized what he was doing, it was too late.””
“What was he doing?””
“Moving money.””
“Like the accounts?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he needed someone else to take the blame.””
I looked at him.
“You.””
“Yes.””
“And me.””
“Yes.””
My stomach turned.
“He used our family.””
Daniel nodded.
“He knew if anything went wrong, my divorce would make me look guilty.””
“That’s why you wanted everything.””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because I needed him to believe I was following his plan.””
I stared at him.
“You wanted him to think you won.””
“Yes.””
“And the daughter thing?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“That was the worst part.””
I looked away.
“He told me if I fought for custody, he would come after Lily.””
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“He had access to people who could make our lives miserable.””
I hated hearing that.
Because it meant Lily had been used as a shield.
Again.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I didn’t know who was loyal to him.””
I thought about Rachel.
Emily.
My father.
My mother.
Everyone.
“You thought I would tell the wrong person.””
Daniel nodded.
“I thought someone close to you was working with him.””
I looked at him.
“And you were right.””
That night, Rebecca arrived with the final piece.
A small hard drive.
“This is everything.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
“Records from Marcus’s system.””
Daniel took it.
“Where did you get this?””
Rebecca looked at him.
“From the person who stole it.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then:
“Rachel.””
I frowned.
“Rachel?””
Rebecca nodded.
“She realized Marcus was never going to protect her.””
“Why would she help us?””
“Because she found out the truth.””
“What truth?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“That Daniel was never planning to abandon Lily.””
I looked at Daniel.
Rebecca continued.
“She thought she was helping Daniel win a divorce.””
“But?””
“But she discovered Marcus was using the divorce to hide something bigger.””
Daniel opened the hard drive.
Files appeared.
Thousands of documents.
Emails.
Transfers.
Recordings.
Then one folder caught my attention.
*FINAL PLAN.*
I clicked it.
Inside were photographs.
One after another.
Our house.
My office.
Lily’s school.
My daily routine.
I felt sick.
“How long?””
Daniel looked at the dates.
“Almost a year.””
A year.
Someone had been watching us for a year.
Then another file appeared.
A video.
The title:
*Claire’s Confession.*
My blood went cold.
“What is that?””
Daniel opened it.
The screen showed me.
Sitting at my desk.
Talking.
But I had never recorded this.
The audio played.
“I transferred the money myself.””
My face went pale.
“That’s not real.””
Rebecca nodded.
“It’s fabricated.””
“They made a video?””
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked at the screen.
“To destroy you.””
The video continued.
My fake voice confessed to everything.
The hidden accounts.
The stolen money.
The fraud.
Everything.
If released, nobody would believe me.
Because they would see my face.
Hear my voice.
Watch me confess.
I whispered:
“He planned this from the beginning.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“He planned it before he met you.””
A message arrived on Daniel’s phone.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*You found the files. Congratulations.*
Daniel’s face changed.
Another message appeared.
*Now come get the last thing you’re missing.*
Then an address.
I recognized it immediately.
My old family home.
The house where I grew up.
The place my father disappeared from.
The place my mother refused to discuss.
I looked at Daniel.
“He wants us there.””
Daniel nodded.
“It’s a trap.””
“Yes.””
“Then why go?””
Because I already knew.
Because the final answer had been waiting there for years.
Because every secret had started in that house.
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel stood.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“This ends tonight.””
He nodded.
But before we left, my phone buzzed one more time.
A final message.
Not from Marcus.
From my father.
*Don’t trust Daniel. He’s still lying about the accident.*
I stopped.
Because I thought we finally knew the truth.
May you like
But apparently…
We were still missing the biggest piece.
