Chapter 9: The Child on the Birth Certificate

I read the message from Agent Brooks so many times that the words stopped looking like words.

A woman named Elena Voss had given birth at a medical facility two years earlier.

She had used Alicia's identity.

And the child's birth certificate listed me as the father.

It was impossible.

I had never slept with Elena. I had never been alone with her outside a handful of corporate events where Richard had introduced her as a security consultant.

Yet someone had created a record that made it appear I had fathered a child with a woman who looked like my missing wife.

Alicia sat beside me on the bed, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“Daniel, tell me the truth.””

I turned toward her.

“I am.””

“Did you ever have a relationship with Elena?””

“No.””

“Did you ever meet her privately?””

“No.””

She studied my face.

I could see the battle inside her. Three years of lies had taught her that the truth could be hidden beneath the most convincing expression.

I couldn't blame her for questioning me.

But I couldn't bear the possibility that she might believe I had betrayed her.

“I swear to you,” I said, “I have never been involved with that woman.””

Alicia lowered her eyes.

“I want to believe you.””

“I know.””

“But someone went to extraordinary lengths to make it look like you did.””

I nodded.

“And that means someone wanted you to believe it.””

Before she could answer, Maya appeared in the doorway holding the torn remains of her flower-girl dress.

“Daddy?””

I immediately moved toward her.

“What's wrong, sweetheart?””

She held up the pale-blue fabric.

“I don't want to wear this anymore.””

I looked at the ruined dress and felt another wave of anger.

“You don't have to.””

“Can we throw it away?””

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

“If that's what you want.””

Maya carried it to the wastebasket and dropped it inside.

She watched the fabric settle before turning toward Alicia.

“Mommy, are you staying this time?””

Alicia's face crumpled.

She opened her arms.

“I'm staying, baby.””

“Promise?””

“I promise I'll do everything I can to stay with you.””

Maya rushed into her embrace.

I looked away, giving them a moment.

Then my phone rang.

Agent Brooks.

“Mr. Cole, we've obtained additional records from the medical facility.””

“What did you find?””

“The child was registered as a girl. The name on the original intake form was Grace Voss. The father's name was entered as Daniel Cole, but the signature was added electronically after the birth.””

I gripped the phone.

“So the signature was forged?””

“We can't confirm that yet. The hospital's system shows the information was updated remotely using a secure credential linked to Richard Hale's investment firm.””

I stared at the wall.

Richard's company had been used to move money, create false documents, and conceal Alicia's disappearance.

Now it appeared someone had used its credentials to fabricate a birth record.

“Where is the child now?””

“We're trying to locate her. The records indicate she was transferred to another facility shortly after birth.””

“Transferred where?””

“We don't know yet.””

I looked at Alicia.

She had heard enough to understand.

“Someone took the baby,” she whispered.

Brooks continued.

“There's another issue. The original medical file contains a notation indicating that the child's mother requested the record be sealed.””

“Who requested it?””

“The request was submitted under Alicia Cole's name.””

Alicia stood abruptly.

“I never gave birth to a child!””

“I understand, Mrs. Cole. That's why we're investigating.””

She began pacing.

“Elena used my identity. She must have used it to get medical care, too. But why would she claim Daniel was the father?””

“Perhaps the child was part of the plan,” I said.

Alicia stopped.

“What plan?””

I didn't know.

But I remembered Vanessa's obsession with marrying me, Richard's insistence on merging our companies, and the anonymous message warning me not to trust anyone.

Someone had spent years constructing a false version of my life.

They had made my wife appear to abandon me.

They had created financial records linking me to fraud.

And now they had manufactured a child who could be used to challenge my marriage, my finances, or my custody of Maya.

“What happens if the birth certificate is real?”” I asked Brooks.

“Even if the record is authentic, it doesn't establish biological paternity. We'll need proper testing and a complete review of the original documents.””

“Can Elena be forced to take a DNA test?””

“If we establish sufficient legal grounds, investigators can seek the appropriate authorization. For now, we're locating her and preserving the records.””

The call ended.

I turned toward Alicia.

“Someone is trying to make us look like criminals.””

She nodded slowly.

“And they may have created a child to give the story a face.””

I thought of the little girl named Grace.

Wherever she was, she hadn't chosen to become part of this nightmare.

If she existed, she deserved to know the truth about her parents.

“We're going to find her,” I said.

Alicia reached for my hand.

“Together?””

I squeezed her fingers.

“Together.””

For the first time since she had returned, I saw a small trace of the woman I remembered.

Then a knock sounded downstairs.

Marcus appeared at the bedroom door a moment later.

“Mr. Cole, there's a woman at the front entrance.””

I stood.

“Who?””

“She says her name is Elena Voss.””

Alicia went pale.

“No.””

Marcus continued.

“She says she wants to surrender.””

I looked at my wife.

Then I walked downstairs.

Elena stood on the porch with her hands visible at her sides. She wore a gray business suit, and her dark hair was pulled into a tight knot.

The resemblance to Alicia was startling.

They weren't identical, but their faces shared the same delicate features, the same dark eyes, and the same narrow chin. From a distance, with the right clothing and hairstyle, someone could mistake one for the other.

Elena looked directly at me.

“Daniel Cole?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Elena Voss. I believe you have questions about a child born two years ago.””

I stepped onto the porch.

“Where is she?””

Elena swallowed.

“Safe.””

“Where?””

“I won't tell you until I know you won't let Richard take her.””

I felt anger rise.

“You don't get to make demands.””

“I'm not making demands. I'm trying to protect a little girl.””

“Then tell me who she is.””

Elena looked past me.

Alicia had appeared at the top of the stairs.

The two women stared at each other.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Elena's face crumpled.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

Alicia gripped the railing.

“Where is my daughter?””

The question struck me like a physical blow.

I turned toward Alicia.

“Your daughter?””

Alicia began crying.

“Elena was pregnant when I disappeared. She told me the baby had died.””

Elena shook her head.

“I lied.””

Alicia descended one step.

“You told me she was dead.””

“I was trying to keep her safe.””

“You let me grieve for a child I never even knew I had!””

Elena looked at me.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

I stepped between them.

“No. You can start by telling us why a birth certificate says I'm the father.””

Elena reached into her bag and withdrew a sealed envelope.

“Because Richard ordered me to use your name. He said it was the only way to make sure the child would remain connected to his family.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Why would he care about your child?””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Because the baby wasn't supposed to survive.””

Alicia gasped.

“What?””

Elena looked at her.

“Richard wanted the child gone because she was evidence of something he had done. I couldn't let him take her.””

She handed me the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

On the back, someone had written a date and a name.

*Grace Cole.*

My hands began to shake.

“Why did you use my name?””

Elena lowered her head.

“Because Richard told me the baby was yours.””

“I never had a relationship with you!””

“I know that now.””

“What does that mean?””

She swallowed hard.

“Richard told me Alicia had been unfaithful. He said you were the biological father, and he offered to pay me to keep the baby away from you.””

Alicia stared at her.

“And you believed him?””

“I was desperate. I had nowhere to go, and he controlled everything. When I discovered the truth, I ran.””

I looked down at the photograph.

The baby had a small birthmark beneath her left ear.

Alicia made a strangled sound.

I turned toward her.

“What is it?””

She was trembling so badly she had to grip the railing.

“That birthmark.””

She pressed a hand to her mouth.

“My mother had the same one.””

I looked at the photograph again.

Then at Alicia.

“Are you saying—”

Elena nodded through her tears.

“Grace is Alicia's biological daughter.””

The world seemed to stop.

Alicia covered her face.

She had lost three years with Maya.

And all that time, somewhere in the world, another little girl had been growing up without knowing who her mother was.

But Elena wasn't finished.

She looked directly at me.

“There's one more thing you need to know.””

“What?””

She glanced toward the street.

“Richard isn't the person who ordered Alicia's disappearance.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Who was?””

Elena's eyes filled with terror.

Then she whispered a name.

“Vanessa.””

Before I could respond, a black SUV screeched to a stop at the curb.

The rear window lowered.

Vanessa sat inside, her face expressionless.

She looked at Elena.

Then at Alicia.

Finally, her gaze settled on me.

“Give me the photograph, Daniel,” she said through the open window.

I held it tighter.

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

“Because if you don't, you'll never find out who Grace's father really is.””
