Chapter 6: The Signature That Could Destroy Us
I had built my company from nothing.
At twenty-six, I had worked out of a rented office above a hardware store, carrying rolled-up blueprints through rain and snow while trying to convince clients that a young contractor could deliver what larger firms promised.
By thirty-five, I employed more than a hundred people.
I knew every major contract, every loan, every investment.
I had never authorized a transfer of four million dollars into a private account.
Yet the document in the agent's hands showed my signature beside every transaction.
“That's a forgery,” I said.
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
“Then why does the bank have your authorization?””
“Because someone copied it.””
“Someone who knew your business well enough to reproduce your electronic signature?””
I stared at her.
She had chosen her words carefully.
She wanted the agents to believe I had access, opportunity, and motive.
She wanted them to believe Alicia and I had worked together to steal the money.
And she had brought evidence designed to make that story believable.
The older agent closed the folder.
“Mr. Cole, I'm Special Agent Brooks. We need you to answer some questions about these transactions.””
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this moment.””
“Then I'm not answering detailed questions until I've spoken with an attorney.””
Brooks nodded.
“That's your right.””
Vanessa's smile faded.
She had expected panic. Perhaps she thought I would argue, shout, or make a careless statement she could use against me.
Instead, I turned toward Alicia.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded, though her face remained pale.
“Daniel, I need to tell you something.””
“Later. We're going to get you somewhere safe.””
“No.”” She caught my sleeve.
“You need to understand that those transfers weren't just about Richard's company.””
“What do you mean?””
She looked at the folder.
“Some of that money was yours.””
My stomach tightened.
“Mine?””
“Three years ago, you invested in a property development fund Richard recommended. He said it would finance affordable housing projects. You transferred your personal investment into the fund.””
I remembered.
It had been one of the first major investments I had made outside my construction business. Richard had introduced me to the fund over dinner, promising steady returns and tax advantages.
I had invested almost eight hundred thousand dollars.
The money had vanished from my portfolio shortly before Alicia disappeared.
Richard had told me the fund was experiencing temporary liquidity problems.
I had believed him.
“You're saying he took my investment?””
Alicia nodded.
“And he used your name to move other people's money. When I discovered the records, I realized he was building a financial trail that would make you look like one of the people running the scheme.””
I turned toward Richard.
“You told me the fund had lost money.””
Richard's face hardened.
“The market changed.””
“You stole from me?””
“I made decisions to protect the company.””
“You stole from me and framed my wife!””
He stepped closer.
“Keep your voice down.””
I laughed once, without humor.
“You don't get to tell me what to do in my own house.””
Agent Brooks raised a hand.
“Everyone needs to remain calm. Mr. Hale, I would like you to answer a few questions as well.””
Richard straightened his coat.
“Of course. I'll cooperate fully.””
Alicia let out a bitter breath.
“You always say that when you think you can control the questions.””
Brooks turned toward her.
“Mrs. Cole, you said you were held against your will. Do you have any evidence supporting that claim?””
Alicia hesitated.
Then she looked at me.
“The records are in the safety deposit box. But there is another piece of evidence.””
“What is it?”” Brooks asked.
“A recording.””
Vanessa's face changed.
It was brief, but unmistakable.
Her fingers tightened around the folder.
I saw it.
Alicia saw it too.
“You remember the recording, don't you?”” my wife asked.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“I have no idea what you're talking about.””
“You were there when Richard told the men to keep me locked up.””
Richard stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
“No,” Alicia said.
“You don't get to silence me anymore.””
She turned toward Agent Brooks.
“I recorded a conversation three years ago. Richard told me he had arranged for me to be moved to a private property until I agreed to hand over the records. Vanessa was there. She asked him what would happen if I refused.””
Brooks took out a small notebook.
“And what did he say?””
Alicia swallowed.
“He said, 'Then Daniel will take the fall, and the girl will grow up believing her mother abandoned her.''”
The room went silent.
I stared at Richard.
He looked away.
For three years, I had blamed myself for failing to find Alicia. I had replayed our final conversation hundreds of times, searching for some warning I should have noticed.
Now I understood that someone had deliberately weaponized my love for my family.
They had taken my wife.
They had stolen years from my daughter.
And they had planned to make me believe that the woman I loved had chosen to leave.
“Where is the recording?”” Brooks asked.
Alicia's expression shifted.
“It's not in the safety deposit box.””
“Where is it?””
“I gave it to someone I trusted.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
The sound was so sharp that everyone turned toward her.
“You expect us to believe that?”” she asked.
“A mysterious recording, secret bank accounts, an imaginary kidnapping? Alicia, you disappeared for three years. You could have gone anywhere. You could have created all of this.””
Alicia's hands began to shake.
Vanessa noticed and stepped closer.
“Tell them why you really disappeared.””
“Stay away from me.””
“Tell them what you did to Daniel's money.””
“I didn't take it!””
“Then why did you run?””
Alicia backed against the wall.
“Because you threatened my daughter!””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Careful.””
I stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her.””
Vanessa looked at me, and the mask finally slipped.
“You have no idea how much I sacrificed for you.””
I stared at her.
“What did you sacrifice?””
“Everything! I spent two years pretending to love a woman who was never supposed to come back. I spent months making sure you were ready to marry me. I put my own future on the line because I believed we could finally have the life we deserved.””
Maya began crying again.
Vanessa glanced at her.
“And this child ruined it all.””
“Don't,” I warned.
She ignored me.
“If she hadn't screamed, if you had just walked down the aisle, everything would have been settled by now.””
My blood ran cold.
“Settled how?””
Vanessa closed her mouth.
Agent Brooks stepped forward.
“Ms. Hale, I need you to explain what you mean.””
Vanessa looked at her father.
Richard shook his head almost imperceptibly.
But she was already losing control.
“The merger documents were going to be signed today,” she said.
“Daniel's company would have been incorporated into my father's group. The outstanding financial liabilities would have been consolidated. All of it would have been handled legally.””
“Except the money was stolen,” I said.
“Allegedly.””
“And Alicia was held against her will.””
“Allegedly.””
“And you hit my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“You hit me first!””
The words echoed through the room.
For a moment, no one spoke.
I felt the weight of what I had done settle over me again. She was right about that one thing. I had struck her, and nothing she had done to Maya justified my response.
“I was wrong to hit you,” I said.
“I will take responsibility for that. But you will not use my mistake to excuse what happened to my daughter or what you did to Alicia.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she smiled.
“You still don't understand.””
She reached into her handbag and removed her phone.
With one quick movement, she tapped the screen.
A video appeared.
It showed Alicia standing outside a small building, looking over her shoulder before entering a black sedan.
The date displayed in the corner was three years earlier.
Vanessa held the screen toward Agent Brooks.
“This was recorded the night Alicia disappeared. She wasn't dragged anywhere. She got into that car willingly.””
Alicia went rigid.
I turned to her.
“Is that you?””
“Yes,” she whispered.
Vanessa's smile widened.
“Tell them what you were doing.””
Alicia shook her head.
“I was trying to escape.””
“From whom?””
Alicia looked at Richard.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
And finally, she looked at me.
“From the man driving the car.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Agent Brooks took the phone and examined the footage.
“Who is the driver?””
Alicia swallowed.
“His name is Peter Lawson. He worked for Richard.””
Richard abruptly turned toward the hallway.
One of the agents blocked his path.
“Mr. Hale, stay where you are.””
Richard raised his hands.
“This is absurd. Peter was a security contractor. He was never involved in any criminal activity.””
Alicia laughed through her tears.
“Then why did you pay him for three years?””
Richard froze.
I stared at him.
“You paid the man who took your daughter-in-law?””
Richard's expression became unreadable.
“I paid him to keep the situation under control.””
“What situation?””
He looked at me.
“The situation that would have destroyed you, Daniel.””
Before I could respond, Agent Brooks's phone rang.
She answered, listened, and looked directly at Alicia.
“Yes,” she said.
“She's here.””
A pause.
Then her face tightened.
“Are you certain?””
Another pause.
“Understood.””
She ended the call.
Everyone waited.
Brooks turned toward me.
“Mr. Cole, we've just received confirmation that the safety deposit box connected to your wife's name was accessed this afternoon.””
Alicia shook her head.
“That's impossible. I haven't been to the bank.””
Brooks glanced at Vanessa.
“The access was authorized using your wife's identity. The bank's security footage shows a woman entering the vault.””
She turned the phone toward us.
The photograph showed a woman wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.
Her face was partially obscured.
But the silver bracelet on her wrist was unmistakable.
I had bought that bracelet for Vanessa on our first anniversary.
Agent Brooks zoomed in on the image.
Then she said the words that made my heart stop.
“The woman who accessed the box wasn't Alicia Cole.””
May you like
She looked at Vanessa.
“It was you.””
