Chapter 5: My Fiancée's Real Name

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

Vanessa was supposed to be at the hotel, explaining to two hundred guests why her wedding had been canceled. Instead, she stood outside my front door while federal agents demanded entry and my missing wife trembled beside our daughter.

Nothing about that evening made sense.

I looked at Alicia.

Her face had gone white.

“She brought them,” she whispered.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

Richard shook his head.

“You don't know that.””

Alicia rounded on him.

“Stop lying! You knew she was coming.””

Richard's jaw clenched, but he didn't deny it.

The agents pounded on the door again.

“Daniel Cole, open the door immediately!””

Vanessa's voice followed, sweet and familiar.

“Daniel, please. Don't make this worse than it needs to be.””

I had heard that tone countless times. She used it when she wanted to make a demand sound like a favor.

I had once mistaken it for kindness.

Now I knew better.

I looked at Alicia.

“Are you afraid of the agents?””

She swallowed.

“I'm afraid of what Vanessa will tell them.””

“What can she tell them?””

“That I'm the one who stole the money.””

Richard rubbed a hand over his face.

“Because you did steal it.””

Alicia recoiled as if he had struck her.

“You forged my signature on those transfers!””

“And you copied the records.””

“To prove what you were doing!””

Richard turned toward me.

“You need to understand something, Daniel. Alicia worked for my company before she disappeared. She had access to sensitive financial information. When the money went missing, she became the obvious suspect.””

“Then why wasn't she arrested three years ago?””

“Because she disappeared.””

“That isn't an answer.””

Richard's voice rose.

“Because she had evidence that could implicate several people, and those people were willing to do anything to keep it from becoming public!””

The room fell silent.

Even Richard seemed startled by what he had admitted.

I stepped closer.

“Who are these people?””

He shook his head.

“I can't tell you.””

“You're standing in my house, and my missing wife is telling me she was held against her will. You can tell me everything, or you can explain your silence to the agents outside.””

Richard looked toward the door.

Then he lowered his voice.

“Vanessa isn't who you think she is.””

Alicia gave a bitter laugh.

“Finally, something true.””

I turned to her.

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

“Her name isn't Vanessa Hale.””

The words made no sense.

I stared at her.

“What?””

“Her name before she met your family was Vanessa Mercer.””

Richard closed his eyes.

I remembered the first time Vanessa had told me about her childhood. She had said her mother died when she was young, that her father had raised her alone, and that she had spent years trying to earn his approval.

She had never mentioned another surname.

“Why would she change her name?””

Alicia glanced toward the front door.

“Because three years ago, she was investigated for helping her father conceal financial fraud. The investigation disappeared before charges were filed.””

Richard snapped, “That's enough!””

“No,” Alicia said.

“You've had three years to silence me. You're not doing it again.””

She turned toward me.

“Vanessa came into our lives six months before I disappeared. She wasn't working for your company then. She was working for Richard. She knew you were trying to expand your construction business, and she knew I had started reviewing the financial records for a charity Richard funded.””

I frowned.

“What charity?””

“The Harbor Light Foundation.””

I recognized the name. Vanessa had persuaded me to donate to it the previous Christmas. She said it provided emergency housing and legal support for women escaping abusive homes.

“I thought it was a legitimate charity.””

“It was legitimate at first,” Alicia said.

“Then money started disappearing. Donations were transferred through shell companies. Some of the money went into accounts connected to Richard's investment firm.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

Alicia looked at him with disgust.

“I saw the transfers. I copied the records. And when I told you I was going to report them, you said I was putting my family in danger.””

Richard's expression turned cold.

“Because you were.””

I stared at him.

“Did you arrange her disappearance?””

He didn't answer.

“Richard!””

Alicia reached for Maya, who had gone quiet in her arms.

“He didn't take me himself,” she said.

“He arranged for someone else to do it.””

Richard's eyes flickered.

I saw it.

So did Alicia.

“Tell him,” she demanded.

“Tell him who drove me away from our house that night.””

Richard's mouth tightened.

The agents outside pounded again.

“Open the door!””

Vanessa's voice cut through the noise.

“Daniel, I'm begging you. Let me explain.””

Alicia looked toward the door.

“She's lying.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel. You don't. She has spent years making people believe whatever she needs them to believe.””

I looked at my wife.

“Then tell me what happened that night.””

Alicia closed her eyes.

“When I discovered the transfers, I made copies of everything. I hid them in a safety deposit box. Then I told Richard I was going to the authorities.””

“And?””

“He called me the next evening. He said he had information about the missing money and wanted to meet privately.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“An office building outside the city. I thought he was going to negotiate. Instead, I walked into a room with two men I had never met.””

Alicia's voice shook.

“They took my phone. They told me that if I tried to leave, they would make sure you went to prison for fraud. They had documents with your signature on them. They said they could make it look as though you had helped move the money.””

I felt sick.

“Was my signature real?””

“No. They copied it from business contracts. But the documents looked convincing.””

Richard stared at the floor.

I wanted to tear the truth out of him.

Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.

“Why didn't you escape?””

“I tried.””

Alicia pulled back her sleeve.

Faint scars marked her wrist.

“They moved me between properties. I wasn't allowed to make calls. I couldn't contact you or Maya without someone listening. Every time I tried to escape, they threatened to hurt you.””

Maya began to cry.

Alicia kissed her hair.

“I'm sorry, baby. I'm so sorry.””

I felt something inside me turn to ice.

“Who threatened you?””

Alicia looked directly at Richard.

“He did.””

Richard's voice cracked.

“I never wanted you hurt.””

“You wanted me silent.””

“I was protecting my company!””

“You were protecting yourself!””

The agents outside shouted again.

I looked toward the door.

Vanessa's voice was no longer gentle.

“Daniel, if you don't open this door, you're going to regret it.””

I walked toward the entrance.

Richard grabbed my arm.

“Don't!””

I shoved him away.

“I'm done listening to you.””

I opened the door.

Two federal agents stood on the porch. Behind them, Vanessa wore a cream-colored coat over her wedding dress. Her makeup was perfect, except for the faint redness on her cheek where I had struck her.

She held a folder against her chest.

“Daniel,” she said softly.

I didn't answer.

Her gaze moved past me.

She saw Alicia.

For a fraction of a second, her expression broke.

Then she smiled.

“Hello, Alicia.””

My wife took a step backward.

Vanessa turned toward the agents.

“That's her. Alicia Cole. She's the woman who's been stealing from my father's company.””

One agent approached Alicia.

“Ma'am, we need you to come with us.””

“No,” I said.

The agent looked at me.

“Sir, please step aside.””

I held my ground.

“She's been missing for three years. She says she was held against her will.””

Vanessa shook her head sadly.

“Daniel, she's manipulating you. She has a history of mental instability.””

Alicia stared at her.

“You told me you would never let me see my daughter again.””

Vanessa's smile widened.

“And you see how well that worked out.””

I felt Maya press against my side.

Then Vanessa opened her folder and removed a document.

“There's something else you should know,” she said.

“Alicia isn't the only person who has been lying to you.””

She handed the paper to the nearest agent.

It was a copy of a bank statement.

At the top was the name of my construction company.

Below it were several transfers totaling nearly four million dollars.

And beside each transaction was my electronic authorization.

I stared at the document.

The signature looked exactly like mine.

Vanessa watched my face carefully.

“Your wife didn't just disappear, Daniel. She left behind enough evidence to send you to prison.””

Alicia whispered my name.

I looked at her.

She was crying.

“Daniel, that's not what it looks like.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Then perhaps you'd like to explain why the money went into an account registered to your husband.””

I looked down at the document again.

Four million dollars.

My company.

My signature.

And a date from three years ago, just days before Alicia vanished.

May you like

The agent closed the folder.

“Mr. Cole, we're going to need you to come with us, too.””
