Chapter 8: The Secret Margaret Took to Her Grave

Robert walked to the living room window.

For several seconds, he stared outside without speaking.

Evelyn approached him.

“Robert, what is she talking about?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know how much she knows.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Dad, what was in Mom's journal?””

Robert looked at his son.

“Something your mother discovered before she died.””

“What?””

Robert hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“Your mother found out that someone had been stealing money from her family's estate.””

Marcus frowned.

“What estate?””

“Your mother's parents owned several commercial properties. When they passed away, Margaret inherited a small investment portfolio and a share in two rental buildings.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I remember. She told me about it once.””

Robert continued.

“Margaret never cared much about money. She left the investments alone for years. But about eight months before she died, she noticed several withdrawals that she couldn't explain.””

Marcus looked confused.

“How much money?””

“Almost three hundred thousand dollars.””

The room fell silent.

Vanessa suddenly stopped smiling.

Robert noticed.

“Your mother hired an accountant. He discovered that someone had been transferring money through several companies.””

Marcus looked at the document in his hand.

“Was Daniel involved?””

“I don't know. Margaret never told me the name of the person responsible.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“Because your mother asked me not to until she had enough evidence. She was afraid the person would disappear.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Robert, you never told me this.””

“I promised Margaret I wouldn't discuss it until I knew the truth.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“And the notebook?””

Robert nodded.

“She wrote down everything she discovered. Names, dates, bank references, and copies of correspondence.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Where is it?””

Robert turned toward her.

“Why do you care?””

“I'm asking a question.””

“And I'm not answering it.””

Officer Bennett looked at Robert.

“Do you know where the journal is now?””

Robert nodded.

“It was in the storage unit with Margaret's belongings.””

Marcus looked at his wife.

“That's why you wanted the keys.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know anything about a journal.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You just told us Daniel has the original will and then mentioned the notebook. How much more obvious can you make it?””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You should worry about your own husband.””

Officer Bennett interrupted.

“Mrs. Williams, I need you to understand that any potential financial evidence must be preserved. You should not attempt to access or remove anything from that storage facility.””

Vanessa looked away.

But Robert had already made up his mind.

“I want to see the storage unit.””

Officer Bennett shook her head.

“Not without appropriate arrangements. We need to determine whether there is evidence that should be preserved and whether anyone has authority to access the property.””

Robert nodded.

“I understand.””

Marcus took out his phone.

“Dad, I know someone who can help us.””

“Who?””

“An accountant. His name is Samuel Brooks. He worked with Mom years ago.””

Robert looked surprised.

“Samuel? I haven't heard that name in years.””

“He called me last month. He said he wanted to discuss some old financial records.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because Vanessa told me not to get involved with anything connected to Grandma's estate.””

Robert's eyes narrowed.

“Your mother inherited that estate. It wasn't your grandmother's alone.””

Marcus dialed the number.

After two rings, a man's voice answered.

“Marcus? I've been waiting for your call.””

“Samuel, I need your help. It's about my mother's old investment records.””

There was a long pause.

Then Samuel asked quietly:

“Have you found the black journal?””

Robert stepped closer.

“Yes,” Marcus answered.

“We know it exists. Do you know what's inside?””

Samuel sighed.

“I know enough to tell you that your mother was right to be afraid.””

Robert's heart began pounding.

“What do you mean?””

Samuel continued.

“Margaret came to see me shortly before she died. She had discovered that money was being moved out of her investment account through a company registered under someone else's name.””

“Whose name?”” Robert asked.

Samuel hesitated.

“Daniel Price.””

Robert closed his eyes.

Marcus looked stunned.

“Daniel?””

“Yes. But he wasn't acting alone.””

“Who was helping him?””

Samuel lowered his voice.

“Your wife.””

Evelyn gasped.

Robert looked at her.

“What?””

“Margaret believed the transfers were being coordinated by someone inside the family. She asked me to investigate quietly.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Who inside the family?””

Samuel didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Vanessa.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Vanessa's face went pale.

“That is a lie!””

Samuel continued.

“Margaret found correspondence between Vanessa and Daniel. They were discussing how to obtain control of the investment accounts.””

Marcus looked as if he might collapse.

“How long ago?””

“Almost two years.””

Robert felt his knees weaken.

Two years.

Vanessa had entered their family long before the accusation, the property documents, or the fake medical report.

She had been planning this for years.

“Samuel,” Robert said, “did Margaret leave any proof?””

“Yes. She gave me copies of the financial statements and asked me to keep them safe.””

“Where are they?””

“In my office.””

“Can you send them to us?””

“I can arrange for a secure transfer through the appropriate legal channels. But there's something else.””

Robert closed his eyes.

“What?””

Samuel's voice became even quieter.

“Margaret discovered that someone had been accessing your personal records. They had copies of your identification, your bank statements, and your property documents.””

Robert stared at the floor.

“Who?””

“I don't know. But I remember Margaret saying something that frightened me.””

“What did she say?””

Samuel paused.

“She said, 'If anything happens to me, Robert must never trust the person who claims to be protecting the family.''”

Robert felt the words strike him like a physical blow.

He looked toward Vanessa.

She was staring at the floor.

For the first time, he wondered whether Margaret had understood the danger long before anyone else.

Officer Bennett approached.

“Mr. Williams, I'd like to make arrangements for a formal statement. We also need to preserve the recording and the documents you've discovered.””

Robert nodded.

“Of course.””

Then Marcus suddenly spoke.

“Samuel, did Mom ever mention a second will?””

Samuel went silent.

“A second will?”” Robert repeated.

“Yes,” Marcus said.

“The document Vanessa showed us says Dad left everything to me. But why would Daniel be named as administrator?””

Samuel answered slowly.

“Because Margaret was worried about exactly that possibility.””

Robert turned.

“What possibility?””

“Your wife believed someone might attempt to use fraudulent documents to take control of the estate. Before she died, she prepared a separate legal arrangement.””

Robert stared at him.

“What arrangement?””

Samuel sighed.

“I'm not authorized to discuss the details over the phone. But I can tell you this: Margaret did not leave the family unprotected.””

Robert felt his chest tighten.

“Where is it?””

Samuel answered.

“Your mother gave me instructions to release it only if someone attempted to challenge Robert's capacity or transfer his property without consent.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“And did someone?””

Samuel's reply was immediate.

“Yes.””

A few minutes later, Samuel emailed a scanned letter to Marcus.

The document contained Margaret's handwriting.

Robert recognized it instantly.

His eyes filled with tears.

He had not seen her handwriting in nearly two years.

At the bottom was a sentence that made him grip the table.

*Robert, if you're reading this, the person I warned you about has finally made their move.*

Below it was another line.

*But the person responsible is not the one you think.*

Robert stared at the screen.

Marcus looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Before anyone could answer, Samuel sent another message.

It contained an audio file.

The filename was:

*MARGARET_FINAL_RECORDING.mp3*

Robert pressed play.

His wife's voice filled the living room.

“Robert, my darling. If you're hearing this, I'm afraid I wasn't able to protect you in time.””

Robert covered his mouth.

Evelyn began crying.

Margaret continued.

“I need you to listen carefully. Daniel Price is not the person who first approached me about the stolen money.””

A pause.

Then her voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who introduced him to our family was someone we trusted for years.””

Robert looked at Evelyn.

Margaret's final words came through the speaker.

“Robert, don't trust…”

The recording suddenly cut off.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“It's corrupted.””

Samuel immediately called back.

“I don't think so,” he said.

“I have the original file.””

“Then why did it stop?””

Samuel took a breath.

“Because Margaret deliberately divided the recording into two parts.””

Robert looked at the phone.

“Where is the second part?””

Samuel answered.

“It's in a safe deposit box. But the instructions say only Robert can collect it.””

Robert's voice trembled.

“What's the bank?””

Samuel gave him the name.

Then he added one final warning.

“Mr. Williams, don't go there alone. Someone has already tried to access that box.””

Robert looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

Samuel hesitated.

Then he said:

“Your son.””

Marcus staggered backward.

“What?””

May you like

And before anyone could question him, Robert's phone began ringing.

The caller was the bank manager.
