Chapter 2: The Phone That Changed Everything

Robert stood at the bottom of the staircase, gripping the wooden railing.

For the first time since the accusation, he felt something other than fear.

Hope.

His son was finally questioning the story.

Upstairs, Evelyn spoke in a trembling voice.

“Marcus, what are you talking about? What did you find?””

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Her phone.””

Vanessa's voice rose sharply.

“Give it back!””

“Why?”” Marcus asked.

“Because it's mine!””

“Then why were you trying to hide it underneath the mattress?””

Robert slowly released the railing.

He remembered seeing Vanessa enter the bedroom earlier that afternoon with her phone in her hand. She had been unusually cheerful, humming while carrying a small shopping bag.

At the time, he hadn't thought anything of it.

Now he wished he had paid closer attention.

“Marcus,” Vanessa said, “you have no right to go through my personal things.””

“I'm not interested in your personal things. I'm interested in what happened in this room.””

“You're supposed to be my husband!””

“And Dad is supposed to be my father.””

The words hung in the air.

Robert closed his eyes.

For thirty-eight years, he had waited to hear his son defend him.

He just hadn't expected it to happen after such a terrible accusation.

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Marcus, give her phone back. She's been through enough.””

“Mom, please. Just look at this.””

A moment later, footsteps approached the stairs.

Marcus appeared at the top, holding a black smartphone.

His face looked pale.

“Dad?””

Robert looked up.

“Yes, son?””

“Did you come into this bedroom before Vanessa started screaming?””

“No. I was in the hallway when she asked me to help her move a box.””

Marcus frowned.

“What box?””

Robert blinked.

“The box near the wardrobe. She said it was too heavy for her.””

Vanessa appeared behind Marcus.

“That's not what happened!””

Robert looked at her.

“You asked me to move it.””

“I asked you to leave me alone!””

“Vanessa,” Marcus warned.

She folded her arms, tears still running down her face.

“I'm telling you, he's twisting everything.””

Marcus looked at his father.

“Dad, did she invite you inside?””

“She asked me to come in and help. I stepped through the doorway. Then she closed the door and started shouting.””

Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.

“Of course that's what he says!””

Marcus turned the phone around.

“Then explain this.””

The screen showed a photograph.

It was a screenshot of a message conversation.

Robert couldn't read the tiny writing from the staircase, but he recognized Vanessa's profile picture.

Marcus scrolled.

His expression changed.

“Vanessa, who is Daniel?””

Her face went completely still.

Evelyn looked between them.

“Daniel? Who's Daniel?””

“Nobody,” Vanessa answered quickly.

Marcus raised his eyebrows.

“Nobody?””

“An old friend.””

“An old friend who sends you messages about my father?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Marcus moved it away.

“No. I'm asking you a question.””

She pressed both hands against her forehead.

“Oh my God. I cannot believe you're doing this to me.””

Marcus looked at the screen again.

Then he read aloud.

"'Once he signs the papers, we won't have to worry about Robert anymore.''”

Robert's fingers tightened around the railing.

“What papers?”” he asked.

Nobody answered.

He took one step up.

“Marcus, what papers?””

Vanessa suddenly lunged toward her husband.

“Stop reading those messages!””

Marcus caught her wrist.

“Why? What's in them?””

“You're hurting me!””

“I'm not even holding you tightly!””

Evelyn hurried between them.

“Marcus! Let her go!””

He released Vanessa immediately.

She backed away, pressing a hand to her chest.

“You see?”” she cried.

“This family is dangerous. First your father, now you!””

Marcus stared at her.

“Enough.””

The single word silenced the room.

Robert slowly climbed the remaining stairs.

When he reached the bedroom doorway, he noticed the box Vanessa had mentioned.

It was sitting beside the wardrobe.

A small cardboard box, decorated with a blue ribbon.

He had seen it before.

Several days earlier, Vanessa had told him it contained old photographs from Marcus's childhood.

Now the lid was lying on the floor.

Inside were several folders, a small digital recorder, and a stack of printed documents.

Robert's stomach tightened.

“What is all this?””

Vanessa rushed toward the box.

“Nothing! It's private!””

Marcus stepped in front of her.

“Don't touch it.””

He picked up the first document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at Robert.

“Dad, is this your signature?””

Robert leaned closer.

It was a photocopy of a legal document.

At the top were the words:

*PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.*

His name appeared beneath a line marked OWNER.

But the signature wasn't his.

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Are you sure?””

“Of course I'm sure! I have never signed that.””

Evelyn took the document from him.

“Oh, Robert. What have you done now?””

He stared at her.

“Evelyn, look at the signature!””

“I am looking!””

“That isn't my handwriting!””

Vanessa began crying again.

“I don't know anything about those papers. Marcus, I swear.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then why are they in your bedroom?””

“I was keeping them for someone!””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Daniel.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Your old friend?””

“Yes!””

“Why does he have documents transferring Dad's house?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Robert stepped toward the papers.

“That house is mine. I bought it twenty-six years ago. Your mother and I paid every mortgage payment ourselves.””

“I know, Dad,” Marcus replied.

“No, son. You don't understand. I still have the original deed in my safe.””

Marcus looked down at the document again.

Then he noticed another page.

It was a printed email.

The sender's name was Daniel Price.

The subject line read:

*FINAL STEPS BEFORE ROBERT'S REMOVAL.*

Marcus began reading.

His face grew increasingly pale.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.

“Don't read that!””

He pulled away.

“Get away from me.””

Evelyn gasped.

Marcus continued.

“'The accusation needs to happen before the attorney appointment. Once the family turns against him, he won't have anyone willing to support his version of events.''”

Robert felt his knees weaken.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Is this real?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He's trying to frame me!””

“Who? Daniel?””

“I don't know what that email is!””

Marcus turned another page.

This time, there was a handwritten note.

Three words had been written in thick black ink.

*Make him leave.*

Below it was a date.

Tomorrow.

Robert stared at the paper.

“Leave where?””

Marcus looked at his father.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa began backing toward the bathroom.

Marcus noticed.

“Where are you going?””

“I need some air.””

“Stay here.””

“I said I need some air!””

She reached for the bathroom door.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name.

*DANIEL PRICE.*

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked at the screen.

Then at Vanessa.

She was no longer crying.

She was staring at the phone with unmistakable fear.

Marcus answered and switched on the speaker.

“Hello?””

A man's voice came through.

“Hey, Marcus. Is everything ready?””

Marcus said nothing.

The man continued.

“Vanessa told me Robert finally signed the papers. We can move forward tomorrow.””

Marcus slowly turned toward his wife.

“What papers?””

There was a pause.

Then Daniel laughed.

“Come on, man. Don't tell me she hasn't explained the plan yet.””

Marcus's face hardened.

“What plan?””

Another silence.

Then Daniel made a terrible mistake.

He said something that no one in that bedroom would ever forget.

“Look, Marcus, I know your wife promised you the house. But you need to understand something. The old man was never supposed to find out that you were involved.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

Robert felt the floor shift beneath his feet.

Evelyn whispered, “Marcus?””

But Marcus couldn't speak.

May you like

Because the man on the phone had just suggested that his own son was part of the plan.

And Vanessa, standing beside the bathroom door, was staring at Marcus as if she were begging him not to reveal the truth.
