Chapter 5: The Secret Agreement Between Husband and Wife
Marcus stared at the signature.
He knew it immediately.
It was his.
Unlike the forged signature on his father's property agreement, this one was unmistakably authentic.
He remembered signing it.
But he remembered something else too.
Vanessa had told him it was an authorization allowing their construction company to negotiate a temporary business loan.
Now he was reading a document that connected his signature to a transfer of his father's property.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
She gripped the staircase railing.
“Marcus, let me explain.””
“You told me this was a business document.””
“It was.””
“Then why is my signature here?””
Daniel stepped between them.
“Because your signature was needed to establish the financial arrangement.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“Shut up.””
Daniel raised his eyebrows.
“Excuse me?””
“I said shut up.””
Robert watched his son carefully.
For the first time that afternoon, Marcus looked less like a frightened child and more like a man beginning to understand the consequences of his own decisions.
“Vanessa,” Marcus continued, “did you know they were going to transfer Dad's house?””
She shook her head.
“Not exactly.””
“What does not exactly mean?””
“I knew Daniel was arranging something with the property.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you!””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Protect me from what? The truth?””
Vanessa hurried down the stairs.
She stopped in front of him and lowered her voice.
“Listen to me. We were drowning. Your company was losing money.
The bank was threatening to freeze your accounts. You were barely sleeping.””
Marcus stared at her.
“So you decided to steal my father's house?””
“I didn't steal anything!””
“Then explain the papers!””
Daniel interrupted.
“Perhaps we should focus on the actual agreement instead of domestic arguments.””
Robert turned toward him.
“You've spent months manipulating this family. You don't get to decide what we discuss.””
Daniel smiled.
“Mr. Williams, with all due respect, you're not the person who signed the loan authorization.””
“Correct. Because I never signed anything.””
Peter Lawson examined the documents again.
“There's a serious issue here. If the property transfer was based on an invalid signature, we need to suspend any action until the documents are verified.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You don't have the authority to make that decision.””
Peter looked at him.
“Actually, I do.””
Daniel turned away angrily.
Marcus grabbed the property application.
“Tell me something, Vanessa. What was supposed to happen after Dad lost his house?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“We were going to pay him back.””
“With what money?””
“The company would recover.””
“How?””
She hesitated.
Daniel answered for her.
“Your father's property was going to serve as security. Once the company received financing, the debt could be settled.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's not what the agreement says.””
“It's a standard recovery clause.””
“It's a clause that gives them control over the property!””
Robert slowly lowered himself into an armchair.
He felt exhausted.
He wanted to believe his son had been deceived.
But there was still one question he couldn't ignore.
“Marcus,” he said, “did you know Vanessa was planning to take my house?””
His son looked at him.
“No, Dad.””
“Did you ever agree to let someone use it as collateral?””
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation was enough to hurt.
Finally, he answered.
“Daniel told me there might be a way to use the equity in your property to secure a better loan. I told him I wouldn't do anything without speaking to you.””
Robert nodded slowly.
“And did you speak to me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Because I knew you'd say no.””
Robert closed his eyes.
There it was.
The truth.
His son hadn't planned to steal his house directly.
But he had been willing to discuss using it without permission.
Vanessa immediately seized the opportunity.
“See? Marcus was trying to help us. I was only doing what needed to be done.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Don't you dare use my son's mistakes to excuse what you did.””
Vanessa turned on her.
“You don't know what happened behind closed doors!””
“I know enough.””
“No, you don't! Your husband controls everything, and your son has spent his entire life living in his shadow!””
Robert slowly raised his head.
“I never forced Marcus to work for me. I helped him build his own business because I wanted him to succeed.””
Vanessa laughed.
“And that's exactly why he's weak! Every time something goes wrong, he runs to Daddy!””
Marcus's face tightened.
“Stop.””
But Vanessa continued.
“You gave him money, equipment, connections, even the first truck he used for his company. And now that he's finally struggling, you want to pretend he should be ashamed of asking for help?””
Robert looked at his son.
“Is that what you believe?””
Marcus couldn't answer.
Vanessa turned toward Daniel.
“Tell them what happens if this deal collapses.””
Daniel folded his arms.
“Your husband's business is already in default. The lender can pursue the guarantees he signed.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You told me I had sixty days.””
“You did.””
“It's only been thirty.””
“Because you missed the first payment.””
Marcus looked stunned.
“What first payment?””
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“Perhaps you should check your email.””
Marcus took out his own phone.
He opened his inbox.
There were several messages from the lending company.
The earliest one was dated two weeks before.
His face drained of color.
“I never received these.””
Daniel shrugged.
“Maybe you should check your spam folder.””
Marcus scrolled.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“You changed my email password.””
She said nothing.
“You told me it was because my account had been hacked.””
“Marcus—”
“You changed the recovery phone number too!””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Daniel sighed impatiently.
“This is getting ridiculous. We need to finish the agreement.””
Peter closed his folder.
“I'm not proceeding with anything today.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“You can't just walk away.””
“I can, and I am. The disputed signature and the circumstances surrounding the application need independent verification.””
Richard nodded reluctantly.
“I agree. I'll need to review the notarization record.””
Daniel's expression darkened.
He looked at Marcus.
“You should think carefully about what you're doing. You owe money, and your wife has been the only person trying to help you.””
Marcus didn't respond.
Daniel walked toward the front door.
Before leaving, he turned toward Robert.
“You may think you've won something today, old man. But your family has bigger problems than a house.””
Robert met his eyes.
“I've survived bigger problems than you.””
Daniel smiled without humor.
“We'll see.””
Then he walked out.
Peter followed after leaving his contact details.
Richard remained behind for another moment.
“Mr. Williams, I strongly recommend that you preserve every original document and avoid signing anything until this matter is independently reviewed.””
Robert nodded.
“I intend to.””
After the attorney left, the house became painfully quiet.
Marcus sat on the sofa with his head in his hands.
Evelyn stood near the window.
Vanessa remained beside the staircase.
Robert looked at his son.
“There's something else you need to tell me.””
Marcus raised his head.
“What?””
“Did you know about the accusation before today?””
Marcus looked confused.
“No.””
Robert studied him.
“Think carefully.””
Marcus swallowed.
Then he whispered, “Vanessa told me last night that she wanted to have a serious conversation with you. She said she needed to discuss your future.””
Robert nodded.
“And?””
“She said you might get angry. She asked me not to interfere.””
Robert stared at him.
“Did she tell you she was going to accuse me of assault?””
“No! I swear!””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“I never planned for this to happen.””
Robert turned toward her.
“Then why did you tear your blouse?””
She looked away.
Marcus stood.
“You did tear it yourself, didn't you?””
Vanessa's silence was answer enough.
Evelyn began crying.
“Oh, my God.””
Marcus stepped toward his wife.
“Look at me.””
She refused.
“Look at me!””
Vanessa finally lifted her eyes.
“Why?””
“Why would you do that to my father?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because nobody was listening.””
“So you decided to destroy him?””
“I needed everyone to believe me!””
“Believe what?””
“That he was becoming dangerous!””
Robert frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked at him.
Then she said something that made Evelyn take a step backward.
“Daniel told me that if we couldn't prove you were mentally unfit, we needed something much stronger.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You mean the accusation?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was supposed to make you look unstable and dangerous. Once the police got involved, the attorney could request an emergency evaluation.””
Robert felt sick.
The accusation hadn't been an impulsive act.
It had been part of a carefully constructed plan.
But before anyone could speak, Vanessa's phone vibrated.
She looked down.
A message appeared.
Marcus noticed the sender's name.
Daniel.
He reached for the phone.
Vanessa pulled it away.
“Don't!””
Marcus managed to see the message before she turned the screen off.
It contained only one sentence.
*If you tell them about the recording, I'll make sure Marcus goes to prison instead of me.*
Marcus slowly lowered his hand.
“What recording?””
Vanessa began trembling.
Robert looked between them.
“Vanessa, what recording?””
She backed toward the staircase.
“Nothing.””
Marcus's voice became cold.
“You told Daniel there was a recording. What did he record?””
Vanessa shook her head.
Then, with tears streaming down her face, she finally whispered:
“He recorded you, Marcus.””
Marcus froze.
“Me?””
“Three weeks ago. When you were talking about your father.””
Robert's heart sank.
“What did I say?””
Vanessa looked directly at him.
“You said something about wishing your father would just disappear.””
Marcus staggered backward.
“That was a joke!””
But Vanessa shook her head.
“Daniel has the entire conversation.””
May you like
And suddenly, the question was no longer whether Vanessa had lied about Robert.
It was whether she had enough evidence to make the lie believable.
