Chapter 9: The Night I Chose to Forget
I spent the entire drive home staring out the window.
Not because I was angry.
Not because I was afraid.
Because my mind was trying to unlock a door that had been sealed for eight years.
A door I had locked myself.
The doctor’s words kept repeating.
*You erased your memory because you were the only person who knew the truth.*
But what truth could be so dangerous that I would rather lose myself than remember it?
I looked at Emily in the back seat.
She was sleeping.
Her head rested against the window.
Her small hand held the stuffed rabbit she had carried since she was three.
My daughter.
My everything.
Even if the truth changed where she came from…
It would never change where she belonged.
With me.
When we arrived home, Daniel didn’t say anything.
Neither did I.
We walked inside like strangers.
A husband and wife who had shared nine years together but suddenly had an entire lifetime between them.
Finally, I turned.
“Sit down.””
Daniel stopped.
“Claire…”
“Amelia.””
The name made him flinch.
I noticed.
“You still can’t say it.””
He looked away.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I sat at the kitchen table.
“I don’t need an apology.””
He looked at me.
“I need the truth.””
He nodded.
“I’ll tell you everything I know.””
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“Even if it makes me hate you?””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
For the first time in days, I believed him.
“Start with Lily.””
Daniel sat across from me.
“Lily and I met when we were young.””
“I know.””
“She was the first person who knew about your existence.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He sighed.
“Before I met Lily, I knew Amelia.””
I froze.
“You knew me?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“Years before Emily was born.””
I felt my heartbeat increase.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you didn’t remember.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He looked at his hands.
“Because I didn’t know what you wanted me to remember.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Amelia and Lily were searching for answers about their childhood.””
“My childhood?””
“Yes.””
“What answers?””
He hesitated.
“About your parents.””
I waited.
“About why you were separated.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“What did you find?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Something neither of you expected.””
“What?””
He lowered his voice.
“You weren’t separated by accident.””
The room felt colder.
“Then why?””
“Because someone wanted you apart.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked upstairs.
At Emily’s room.
“I don’t know.””
I stood.
“Daniel.””
“I swear.””
“You always say that.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“But it’s true.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, the street looked normal.
Neighbors.
Cars.
Lights.
A world that had no idea mine had broken.
“Tell me about the night Emily was born.””
Daniel went quiet.
Then he began.
“Lily was supposed to give birth that night.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“She went into labor early.””
“And?””
“Before she reached the hospital, she called Amelia.””
My breath caught.
“Me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Lily had found something.””
“What?””
“She found medical records.””
My fingers tightened.
“Whose records?””
“Yours.””
I felt dizzy.
“What did they say?””
“That Amelia Carter had been involved in a clinical trial.””
“The memory procedure.””
Daniel nodded.
“She believed someone was using it to hide something.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at him.
“Then what happened?””
Daniel continued.
“Lily called you because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That someone was following her.””
A chill moved through me.
“What happened next?””
“You came to the hospital.””
“With Lily?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did everyone think she was dead?””
Daniel looked devastated.
“Because of what happened after.””
He reached for the old box again.
This time he pulled out a different photograph.
A hospital hallway.
Two women standing together.
My breath stopped.
One was Lily.
The other was me.
But we looked different.
Lily was pregnant.
I was holding a folder.
“What is this?””
“That was taken minutes before everything happened.””
“What happened?””
Daniel stared at the photograph.
“An argument.””
“Between who?””
“You and Lily.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because you discovered something.””
“What?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with guilt.
“The baby.””
My stomach tightened.
“Emily?””
He nodded.
“You and Lily found out the hospital records had been altered.””
“To say what?””
“That Lily was the mother.””
Silence.
I stared.
“But she wasn’t?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
My entire body went cold.
“Then who was?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The answer was already forming.
“No.””
Daniel whispered:
“Amelia…”
“No.””
I backed away.
“That’s impossible.””
“You were pregnant.””
My hand moved to my stomach instinctively.
“You’re saying Emily is my daughter?””
“Yes.””
“But Lily said—”
“Lily believed she was.””
I looked confused.
“Why?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Because she was there when Emily was born.””
“So was I.””
“Yes.””
“Then why doesn’t anyone know?””
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“Because something happened to you.””
I felt a sudden pressure in my head.
A memory trying to break through.
A hallway.
A scream.
A baby crying.
A woman saying:
“Take her.””
I grabbed the table.
Daniel stood.
“Claire?””
I closed my eyes.
“I remember something.””
“What?””
“My voice.””
“What did you say?””
I swallowed.
“I said… take her.””
Daniel froze.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
The memory vanished.
I opened my eyes.
“I need Lily.””
Lily arrived an hour later.
She looked at me.
And immediately knew.
“You remembered.””
Not a question.
A statement.
“Some of it.””
She sat down.
Daniel stayed standing.
I looked between them.
“You both need to stop protecting me.””
Neither spoke.
“Tell me what happened after Emily was born.””
Lily’s face changed.
Pain.
Guilt.
Fear.
“All right.””
She took a deep breath.
“Emily was born at 2:17 a.m.””
I listened.
“I held her first.””
My chest tightened.
“But you were there.””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Lily looked at me.
“You looked at Emily.””
“And?””
“You started crying.””
“Why?””
“Because you recognized her.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Lily’s voice became softer.
“You told me you remembered everything.””
My heart pounded.
“Everything about what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“About the night we were separated.””
I froze.
“You mean our childhood?””
She nodded.
“But also something else.””
“What?””
Lily reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this hidden inside the notebook.””
My name was written on it.
Amelia.
Not Claire.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Written by me.
The first line made me stop breathing.
*“Lily, if you are reading this, then I failed to protect Emily.””*
I kept reading.
*“The person who changed our records is not a stranger.””*
My heart raced.
The next sentence was underlined.
*“It is someone we both trusted.””*
I looked up.
“Who?””
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked back down.
The final line was written larger than the others.
Almost like I had written it in panic.
*“Never let Daniel find out that Emily was born with the mark.””*
I stopped.
“What mark?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emily appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were fixed on the letter.
“Mom…”
I turned.
“What?””
She slowly walked down.
“That’s what she was trying to show you.””
My heart stopped.
“What mark?””
Emily looked at me.
“The one I have.””
I went completely still.
“What are you talking about?””
She pulled up her sleeve.
On her wrist was a small birthmark.
One I had seen a thousand times.
A mark shaped like a tiny crescent moon.
But I had never thought anything of it.
Emily whispered:
“She said you had the same one.””
I looked down at my own wrist.
My breath disappeared.
Because there it was.
A mark I had always had.
A mark I never questioned.
A mark that suddenly felt like the final piece of a terrifying puzzle.
Lily whispered:
“Amelia…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her face was full of fear.
“She wasn’t talking about Emily.””
I froze.
“Who wasn’t?””
Lily pointed at the letter.
“The person who wrote this.””
My hands shook.
“Why?””
Lily’s voice dropped.
“Because the person who knew about the mark…”
She looked at me.
“Wasn’t you.””
The room went silent.
May you like
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“It was your twin.””
