Chapter 7: The Truth I Buried Inside My Own Memory
I couldn’t breathe.
The notebook sat on Emily’s pillow like it had been placed there deliberately.
Not dropped.
Not forgotten.
Placed.
A message.
A warning.
A confession.
Daniel reached the bed first.
“Don’t touch it.””
I stopped.
The fear in his voice was different.
Not the fear of a husband caught in a lie.
The fear of someone standing in front of something dangerous.
“What?””
“Wait.””
He looked around the room.
The window was open.
The curtains moved slowly in the cold night air.
Emily was gone.
My daughter was gone.
Nothing else mattered.
I ran to the hallway.
“Emily!””
No answer.
“Emily!””
My voice broke.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
I ignored him.
I searched every corner of the room.
The closet.
Under the bed.
Behind the curtains.
Nothing.
Then I saw something.
A tiny white thread caught on the window latch.
I touched it.
A piece of fabric.
Blue.
My blood went cold.
The same color.
The same impossible blue.
“Daniel.””
He looked over.
“What?””
I held up the thread.
His face changed.
Because he knew.
“This was her.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I screamed:
“Who took my daughter?””
Before he could respond, a sound came from downstairs.
A small voice.
“Mom?””
I turned.
Emily was standing at the bottom of the stairs.
My entire body collapsed with relief.
I ran to her.
“Emily!””
I pulled her into my arms.
“Where were you?””
She hugged me tightly.
“I woke up because someone called me.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
She looked upstairs.
“The lady.””
I froze.
“What lady?””
Emily whispered:
“The one who looks like you.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily, what did she say?””
My daughter looked at him.
“She told me I needed to see something.””
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“She said you forgot.””
The sentence felt like a punch.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did I forget?””
Nobody answered.
Emily pointed upstairs.
“She left the notebook.””
I picked up my daughter.
I didn’t care what secrets waited inside that book.
I didn’t care what it revealed about me.
I only cared that Emily was safe.
But as I carried her back to her room, she whispered something that made me stop.
“Mom?””
“Yeah?””
“She was crying.””
I looked down.
“Who?””
“The lady.””
Emily’s fingers held onto my shirt.
“She said she didn’t want to scare me.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why would she scare you?””
Emily looked toward the open window.
“Because she said you would never believe her.””
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
They searched the house.
They checked the windows.
They asked questions.
But they found nothing.
No footprints.
No signs of forced entry.
No evidence anyone had been inside.
Exactly what I expected.
Because how could anyone prove something impossible?
A woman who looked like me.
A missing wife who was somehow alive.
A daughter who talked to someone nobody else could see.
A life built on memories that weren’t mine.
After the officers left, I sat beside Emily until she fell asleep.
Daniel stayed in the doorway.
Watching.
Waiting.
I looked at him.
“You’re going to tell me everything.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Not tomorrow.””
“Yes.””
“Not when you think I’m ready.””
His eyes lowered.
“Yes.””
“Now.””
He walked inside.
Slowly.
Like he was entering a room where something fragile was already broken.
“I need to show you something.””
I almost laughed.
“Another secret?””
He accepted the anger.
“Yes.””
He went downstairs.
A few minutes later, he returned with a small box.
I stared at it.
“What is that?””
“Something you gave me.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“When?””
“Before the procedure.””
The word still felt unreal.
Before the procedure.
Before I erased myself.
He opened the box.
Inside was a necklace.
A simple silver necklace.
I recognized it immediately.
I wore it every day.
Or I used to.
“You said it was important.””
“Why?””
Daniel picked it up.
“Because you told me it was the only thing you had left from your old life.””
My fingers touched the necklace.
I felt something.
A flash.
Not a memory.
A feeling.
Fear.
Rain.
A hospital hallway.
A baby crying.
I pulled my hand back.
“What happened?””
Daniel watched me carefully.
“You remembered something.””
“No.””
But I had.
A small piece.
A crack in the wall.
A woman running.
A voice shouting.
My voice.
“Don’t let him find out.””
I covered my mouth.
Daniel went pale.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“I heard something.””
“What?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
He sat beside me.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“Amelia.””
The name felt heavier now.
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“What was I hiding?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I stood.
“Then we find out.””
I picked up the notebook.
The one from Emily’s bed.
“I’m reading this.””
Daniel looked worried.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
I opened the first page.
The handwriting was mine.
The date was eight years ago.
The entries were short.
Fragments.
Like someone writing while afraid.
*March 12*
*I know Daniel thinks I don’t know.*
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you think I didn’t know?””
He didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
*March 13*
*Lily is right. Something is wrong. Emily’s records were changed.*
My heart raced.
Emily’s records.
Changed.
*March 14*
*I found proof. Daniel isn’t the only one hiding something.*
I turned the page.
*March 15*
*If anything happens to me, Emily must never know.*
The words blurred.
“Never know what?””
Daniel looked terrified.
I turned the next page.
Only one sentence.
*March 16*
*The woman who gave birth to Emily is not Lily.*
I stopped.
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
He didn’t move.
“What does this mean?””
“I don’t know.””
“Stop saying that!””
My voice echoed.
“You knew Lily was pregnant.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Lily was Emily’s mother.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does this say she isn’t?””
Daniel looked at the notebook.
“I don’t know.””
I turned another page.
The next entry was written differently.
The handwriting was shakier.
Like the person writing it was crying.
*March 17*
*I finally understand why I look like her.*
My fingers froze.
I kept reading.
*I finally understand why Emily knows me before I know her.*
A cold silence filled the room.
Then the final sentence.
The one that made my entire world collapse.
*I am not Emily’s mother. I am Emily’s twin.*
The notebook fell from my hands.
“No.””
Daniel stared at the page.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He shook his head.
“I swear I didn’t.””
My body went numb.
“Then who is Emily’s mother?””
A sound came from behind us.
A tiny voice.
“Mom?””
We turned.
Emily was standing in the doorway.
Her face was pale.
She had heard everything.
I rushed toward her.
“Emily, sweetheart—”
But she stepped back.
Her eyes moved between me and Daniel.
Then she whispered:
“I know who my real mother is.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Emily pointed toward the window.
The empty darkness outside.
And said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.
“She’s the one who died.””
The lights in the house flickered.
And for one second…
In the reflection of the window…
I saw three figures standing behind us.
Me.
May you like
Emily.
And a woman with my face.
