Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden in My Daughter’s Birth Records

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

My eyes moved across the words, but my brain refused to connect them.

*The woman raising my daughter is wearing my face.*

I looked up at Lily.

The woman who had my eyes.

My voice.

My reflection.

“What does this mean?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

And the look between them told me everything.

They had shared a conversation before.

A truth before me.

A truth I had somehow been excluded from.

“Daniel.””

He flinched.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“You are going to explain this.””

Lily stood slowly.

“Maybe I should.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“I knew something was wrong from the moment I saw you.””

“When?””

“The first time I saw you holding Emily.””

My chest tightened.

“That was eight years ago?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come to me?””

Lily looked down.

“Because I didn’t know if I was losing my mind.””

The answer was too familiar.

Because that was exactly how I had felt.

Watching the camera.

Seeing the empty space beside Emily.

Wondering if I was imagining things.

“I thought I was dead,” Lily whispered.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She walked toward the window.

“When I woke up in the hospital, nobody knew who I was.””

A breeze moved the curtains.

“My wallet was gone. My phone was gone. My identification was missing.””

She touched her face.

“I had injuries. Memory problems. They thought I was another patient.””

“That doesn’t explain…”

“It took me months to remember everything.””

Her voice became quieter.

“And when I finally remembered Daniel, I went looking for him.””

She looked at him.

“But he had already moved.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Lily…”

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to say my name like you didn’t erase my entire life.””

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t defend himself.

That frightened me.

“Why did you think she was dead?””

He swallowed.

“The hospital called.””

“That’s all?””

“They told me there had been an accident.””

“And you believed them?””

“I went there.””

His voice cracked.

“I saw someone who looked like Lily.””

I looked at Lily.

She slowly shook her head.

“They showed him another woman.””

The room went silent.

My heart began racing.

“Another woman?””

Lily nodded.

“A woman who had injuries similar to mine.””

Daniel looked away.

“The police said they couldn’t identify her immediately.””

“And you just accepted it?””

“No.””

His voice was almost a whisper.

“I searched.””

“Then why did you stop?””

He didn’t answer.

Lily did.

“Because he found you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Lily looked at me.

“He met you three months after the accident.””

I felt sick.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I backed away.

“No, because I met you nine years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And Emily was born eight years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Lily’s expression broke.

“I’m saying you entered Daniel’s life right after I disappeared.””

I looked at Daniel.

A horrible thought formed.

“No.””

He stepped toward me.

“Claire, listen.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

My voice echoed through the house.

“Why do you have no photographs of me before Emily?””

Daniel stopped.

That question hit him.

Because it was true.

Our entire life together existed mostly after Emily was born.

A few wedding pictures.

A few vacations.

Almost nothing from before.

I had always thought it was because we were private.

Now I wondered if it was because there was something to hide.

Lily reached into another drawer.

She pulled out a folder.

“I found these last year.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Lily, don’t.””

“Why?””

Her eyes hardened.

“Because she deserves to know.””

She handed the folder to me.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Hospital reports.

Birth certificates.

I flipped through them.

Then I stopped.

A name caught my attention.

*Emily Rose Carter.*

My daughter.

My hands shook.

The mother’s name was printed below.

I expected to see mine.

But it wasn’t.

It was:

*Lillian Marie Carter.*

I looked up.

“No.””

Lily didn’t look away.

“I told you.””

“This can’t be real.””

“It is.””

I turned the page.

Another document.

A DNA test.

My eyes scanned the results.

Then stopped.

The test wasn’t between Lily and Emily.

It was between me and Emily.

The result was confusing.

My name.

My blood.

A match.

A biological connection.

I looked at Lily.

“How?””

Nobody answered.

“How can she be your daughter and mine?””

Daniel sat down.

His face looked older than I had ever seen it.

“Because we don’t know.””

The anger inside me exploded.

“You don’t know?””

“We were trying to figure it out.””

“For eight years?””

Daniel looked away.

“We were afraid.””

“Of what?””

He didn’t answer.

Lily did.

“Of the truth.””

I stared at both of them.

A mother.

A husband.

Two people who had been living with secrets.

And my daughter was somewhere in the middle.

“I want to leave.””

Daniel stood.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the door.

“I need answers, and neither of you has given me any.””

Lily looked devastated.

“I understand.””

I stopped.

Because despite everything, she didn’t look like an enemy.

She looked like someone who had lost eight years of her life.

Someone who had missed birthdays.

First steps.

First words.

Someone who had watched another woman live the life she should have had.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

Lily looked at me.

“For what?””

I swallowed.

“For everything.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You didn’t take her from me.””

I looked at her.

“Then who did?””

Nobody spoke.

But I already knew.

Daniel.

That night, I didn’t sleep.

I sat on the floor beside Emily’s bed.

Watching her breathe.

Watching my little girl sleep.

The girl I had raised.

The girl who called me Mom.

My heart felt like it was being pulled in two directions.

I loved her.

Nothing could change that.

But suddenly, I was terrified of everything I didn’t know.

At 3:14 a.m., Emily opened her eyes.

“Mom?””

I looked up.

“Yeah, baby?””

She stared at me.

“You met her.””

My body went cold.

“What?””

Emily sat up slowly.

“The woman.””

I couldn’t speak.

“How do you know?””

She looked toward the empty corner of her room.

“She told me.””

The air left my lungs.

“Who told you?””

Emily hugged her rabbit.

“The lady who sleeps beside me.””

I looked around the room.

Nothing.

Only shadows.

“Emily…”

“She said she tried to come home.””

My voice trembled.

“Who is she?””

My daughter looked at me.

And whispered:

“She said she’s my real mommy.””

The room seemed to shrink.

I reached for her.

But Emily pulled back slightly.

Not afraid of me.

Afraid of what she was about to say.

“She said you don’t know what happened the night I was born.””

I froze.

Because I didn’t.

I knew the story Daniel told me.

A normal birth.

A normal hospital.

A normal beginning.

But now I wondered if any of it had been true.

Emily looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Mom…”

“Yes?””

“She said you weren’t supposed to be there.””

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?””

Emily looked toward the corner.

Then whispered:

“She said you were born because she disappeared.””

A cold silence filled the room.

And then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

And beneath it was a picture.

A picture taken eight years ago.

The night Emily was born.

May you like

The message said:

*“Ask Daniel why the woman in this photo has your face.””*
