Chapter 6: The Truth My Daughter Was Afraid To Tell

The line went dead.

I stood there holding the phone against my ear long after the call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room had heard the same thing.

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

The words replayed in my head.

Over and over.

Like a song I couldn’t turn off.

My first instinct was relief.

A terrible, confusing kind of relief.

Because some part of me had been waiting for proof that my wife wasn’t the monster I feared she might be.

But that relief disappeared almost immediately.

Because if Vanessa didn’t lock Lily outside…

Then someone else did.

Someone who had access to my home.

Someone who knew our family.

Someone who had my daughter.

“Call the police,” my father said.

His voice was calm, but his hands were shaking.

I looked at him.

“You heard her.””

“Yes.””

“You heard Lily.””

Edward nodded.

“And that means we know she’s alive.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“I’m going.””

My father stepped in front of me.

“Daniel.””

“Move.””

“You don’t know where you’re going.””

“I know someone has my daughter.””

“And if you rush in without a plan, you could put her in more danger.””

The words stopped me.

Because he was right.

I hated that he was right.

My entire body wanted to run.

To break down every door in the city until I found her.

But Lily needed her father thinking clearly.

Not a man drowning in panic.

Behind us, Vanessa spoke.

“I know where he would take her.””

Everyone turned.

Her face was pale.

But her voice was steady.

“Who?””

She looked at Michael.

“My brother.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because it was his place.””

I looked at her.

“What place?””

She hesitated.

The hesitation told me everything.

Another secret.

Another thing she had kept from me.

“Vanessa.””

She closed her eyes.

“My family owned a cabin outside the city.””

My father frowned.

“The old lake property?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You know about it?””

Edward nodded slowly.

“I knew your father had one.””

She looked down.

“My brother used to go there when he wanted to disappear.””

Michael stepped closer.

“He took Lily there?””

“I think so.””

“You think?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That sentence hurt.

Because I understood what she meant.

She had spent years protecting secrets.

Now the secrets were too big to control.

My father grabbed his coat.

“We leave now.””

Nobody argued.

The drive felt endless.

Rain started falling halfway there.

The windshield wipers moved back and forth, but they couldn’t clear the storm building inside my head.

I sat in the passenger seat beside my father.

Michael and Vanessa followed behind us.

Neither of us spoke for the first twenty minutes.

Then my father finally said:

“I’m sorry.””

I looked out the window.

“For what?””

“For not telling you.””

I laughed quietly.

“That’s becoming a popular sentence tonight.””

Edward looked down.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I turned toward him.

“Did it work?””

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew it didn’t.

“My whole life,” I said, “I believed our family was honest.””

My father nodded.

“I know.””

“No. I don’t think you do.””

I looked at him.

“I trusted Vanessa. I trusted you. I trusted everyone.””

My voice became quieter.

“And everyone knew something I didn’t.””

Edward looked away.

“I made mistakes.””

I wanted to stay angry.

But my father wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t making excuses.

He looked old.

Older than I had ever seen him.

“What did you know about Michael?””

He was silent for a moment.

Then he answered.

“Seven years ago, I received a letter.””

My stomach tightened.

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Another anonymous letter?””

“Yes.””

“What did it say?””

My father looked straight ahead.

“It said Michael was alive.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you believed it?””

“At first, no.””

“Then?””

“Then I found proof.””

“What proof?””

He took a deep breath.

“I saw him.””

I stared at him.

“You saw Michael?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Seven years ago.””

My anger returned.

“You saw him and never told me?””

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You saw the man who was Lily’s biological father and you said nothing?””

Edward gripped the steering wheel.

“Because Michael begged me not to.””

That shocked me.

“What?””

“He said someone was watching him.””

I looked at him.

“He was afraid.””

My father nodded.

“He told me if the wrong person knew he was alive, Lily would be in danger.””

I looked down.

The same excuse.

The same reason everyone gave.

Protecting Lily.

But this time…

It sounded different.

Because now Lily was actually in danger.

“Why didn’t you tell me later?””

Edward’s voice became quiet.

“Because every time I tried, something happened.””

“What do you mean?””

“Your house was broken into.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Six years ago.””

I stared at him.

“You never told me that.””

“Because nothing was stolen.””

“Then why?””

“Because they weren’t looking for something.””

My father looked at me.

“They were looking.””

A cold silence filled the car.

“For what?””

Edward didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

We both knew.

Lily.

When we arrived at the cabin, the rain had become heavier.

The old wooden building sat near the lake, surrounded by trees.

The place looked abandoned.

Dark windows.

Broken fence.

No lights.

But my father noticed something immediately.

“There.””

He pointed.

Fresh tire tracks.

My heart started pounding.

Someone had been here.

We got out of the car.

Michael came running from behind us.

“Do you see anything?””

I pointed.

He looked toward the cabin.

“Lily is here.””

“How do you know?””

He swallowed.

“Because this is where I used to hide things.””

I looked at him.

“What things?””

He didn’t answer.

That bothered me.

But before I could ask, we heard something.

A sound from inside.

A child’s voice.

“Daddy?””

Everything stopped.

“Lily!””

I ran toward the door.

“Daniel!”” my father shouted.

But I didn’t care.

My daughter was inside.

I kicked the door open.

The cabin was dark.

Cold.

Empty.

Then a small figure moved from the corner.

“Daddy!””

I dropped to my knees.

Lily ran into my arms.

I held her so tightly I was afraid I would never let go.

“Oh my God.””

I buried my face in her hair.

“You’re okay.””

She cried against me.

“I knew you’d come.””

Those words almost destroyed me.

Because she had trusted me.

Even when everyone else had lied.

Behind me, everyone entered the cabin.

Vanessa immediately hugged Lily.

“I’m so sorry.””

But Lily pulled back.

Not angrily.

Just carefully.

Like she wasn’t sure anymore.

My heart broke.

Then my father noticed something.

On the table.

A tape recorder.

Beside it was a note.

He picked it up.

My name was written on it.

*For Daniel.*

Everyone became silent.

Michael looked afraid.

“What is that?””

I stared at the recorder.

Then at Lily.

“Who left this?””

Lily’s face changed.

She looked terrified.

“Sweetheart?””

She whispered:

“He told me not to listen.””

“Who?””

She looked toward the window.

Then she said the words that made every person in the room freeze.

“The man who brought me here.””

I stepped closer.

“Who brought you here, Lily?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

And she answered:

“Uncle Ryan.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Because she knew exactly who that was.

Her brother.

The man who had been searching for our family’s secrets.

The man who had been close enough to destroy us.

My father picked up the tape recorder.

A red light blinked.

It was already recording.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

A voice I had heard before.

Ryan’s voice.

“Hello, Daniel.””

The room went silent.

“You’ve spent your whole life believing you were the hero of this story.””

A pause.

Then:

“But you were never told what your father did to protect you.””

My father went completely still.

The recording continued.

“And now you’re finally going to learn the truth.””

The tape clicked.

May you like

Then Ryan said one final sentence.

“The night Michael disappeared… Edward was there.””
