Chapter 4: The Secret Beneath The Floorboards
I stared at the message until the letters blurred.
*Stop asking questions, or you’ll lose more than the truth.*
For a few seconds, I forgot everyone was watching me.
I forgot the shattered glass on the floor.
I forgot the party guests standing around my living room like witnesses at a trial.
All I could see was that sentence.
A stranger had threatened me.
A stranger who knew about Lily.
A stranger who knew what questions I was asking before I had even asked them.
“Daniel?””
My father’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
Edward was watching my face carefully.
“What is it?””
I locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
Nobody believed me.
Not even myself.
Vanessa noticed.
“What happened?””
I looked at her.
A strange feeling moved through me.
For twenty years, she had been the person I turned to when something went wrong.
Tonight, she was the person I needed answers from.
But I still didn’t know if she was the person I could trust.
“Someone sent me a message.””
Michael’s expression changed.
“What kind of message?””
“A warning.””
The room went quiet.
My father held out his hand.
“Let me see.””
I hesitated.
Then I gave him the phone.
Edward read the message twice.
His face became serious.
“Did this number come through as unknown?””
“Yes.””
Michael stepped closer.
“Show me.””
My father handed him the phone.
The second Michael saw the screen, his face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You know this number?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“I’ve seen it before.””
The air disappeared from my lungs.
“Where?””
Michael looked toward Vanessa.
“I think she should tell him.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“This has gone too far.””
I laughed quietly.
“Too far?””
I looked around the room.
“My daughter was locked outside. I found out I may not be her biological father. A man who was supposedly dead walked into my house. And now someone is threatening me.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me what is too far.””
Vanessa covered her face with both hands.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not like the confident woman who managed every detail of our lives.
Just a person who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“Eight years ago,” she whispered, “Michael didn’t disappear because he wanted to.””
Michael looked down.
“I know.””
“No,” Vanessa said.
“You don’t know everything.””
That caught everyone’s attention.
Michael stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“Because you weren’t the only person who was lied to.””
The room became completely silent.
I looked between them.
“What happened eight years ago?””
Vanessa walked toward the couch and sat down.
She looked at Lily.
“Can someone take her upstairs?””
My father immediately understood.
“I’ll take her.””
Lily grabbed his hand.
“Grandpa?””
Edward smiled gently.
“Come on, sweetheart. Let’s get you comfortable.””
She looked at me.
I forced myself to smile.
“Go with Grandpa. I’ll be right here.””
She nodded.
But before leaving, she whispered:
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“I still want you.””
My heart broke.
I nodded quickly because if I spoke, I knew my voice would fail.
“I’m not going anywhere.””
After my father and Lily disappeared upstairs, the room felt colder.
The adults remained.
The secrets remained.
And finally, Vanessa began.
“Michael and I knew each other before Daniel.””
I already knew that.
But hearing it still hurt.
“We were together when we were younger,” she continued.
Michael looked away.
“We weren’t perfect.””
“No,” Vanessa said quietly.
“We weren’t.””
She looked at me.
“When I found out I was pregnant, Michael wanted to marry me.””
I swallowed.
“But you left him.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because Michael was in trouble.””
Michael immediately reacted.
“Vanessa.””
“No. He needs to know.””
The room went still.
“He needs to know everything.””
She turned back to me.
“Michael had discovered something at his company.””
“What?””
“A financial crime.””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“I worked for a construction company. I was an accountant. I found evidence that someone was stealing money.””
“Who?””
Neither answered.
That scared me.
“Who?””
Vanessa looked at Michael.
Then she said:
“Someone powerful.””
Michael nodded.
“The kind of person who can erase records. Change reports. Make people disappear.””
My father’s words came back to me.
A detective’s instinct.
Someone had made sure everyone believed Michael was gone.
I looked at him.
“So someone tried to kill you?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Yes.””
A chill moved through the room.
“What happened?””
Michael stared at the floor.
“The night I was supposed to meet Vanessa and tell her everything, my car went off the road.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I thought he died.””
“But you knew he didn’t.””
“No.””
Michael looked at her.
“Not at first.””
The pain between them was obvious.
“Then how did you find out?””
Vanessa’s hands trembled.
“Three years later.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Three years?””
She nodded.
“I received a letter.””
“From Michael?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“From someone who knew where he was.””
My father’s voice came from the doorway.
He had returned.
I didn’t even notice him come downstairs.
“What did the letter say?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“It said if I contacted Michael, Lily would be taken away.””
My body went cold.
“What?””
She started crying.
“I was alone. I had a newborn baby. I thought someone had already tried to kill him. I thought they would come after us next.””
Michael’s expression broke.
“And you believed them.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I was scared.””
Michael nodded slowly.
“I know.””
But the hurt in his voice remained.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer that could fix it.
My father walked closer.
“Who sent the letter?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Michael interrupted.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at him.
He reached into his coat and pulled out another envelope.
“This is why I came tonight.””
He placed it on the table.
My hands went cold.
“What is that?””
“The original letter.””
Vanessa stared at it.
“You kept it?””
“I kept everything.””
Michael looked at me.
“Because I knew one day you would need to know the truth.””
I picked up the envelope.
My name wasn’t on it.
Vanessa’s name wasn’t on it.
There was only one word written on the front.
*FAMILY.*
I opened it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The handwriting was neat.
Almost too neat.
The message was short.
*She will never know who her father is.*
My stomach tightened.
But below that sentence was something else.
A name.
A name that made my father step back.
A name that made Vanessa start crying.
A name I had trusted for years.
I looked at the paper again.
Then at Vanessa.
“Why is your mother’s name written here?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in the room knew.
The secret wasn’t just about Michael.
It wasn’t just about Lily.
It went deeper.
My wife’s family had been involved from the beginning.
And upstairs, my daughter was sleeping under the same roof as the person who might have helped destroy her life.
Then I heard a sound.
A small sound.
A creak.
Coming from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
My father looked toward the ceiling.
“That wasn’t Lily.””
Michael stood up.
“What was that?””
I didn’t wait for an answer.
I ran toward the stairs.
Because I knew that sound.
I knew exactly what it meant.
May you like
Someone was walking around upstairs.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there.
