Chapter 5: The Stranger In My Daughter’s Room
I ran up the stairs so fast I nearly slipped on the polished wood.
“Lily!””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
No answer.
That was the moment fear became something physical.
Not an idea.
Not a worry.
A force.
It grabbed my chest and squeezed.
Behind me, I heard footsteps.
My father.
Michael.
Vanessa.
All three followed me upstairs.
The hallway lights were dimmed for the party, leaving parts of the corridor covered in shadows.
Lily’s bedroom door was halfway open.
I knew I had closed it earlier.
I always closed it halfway before bedtime because Lily liked having a small line of light from the hallway.
“Lily?”” I whispered.
I pushed the door open.
The room looked normal.
Her stuffed animals were on the bed.
Her books were stacked beside her nightstand.
The small star projector on her shelf was still casting tiny blue lights across the ceiling.
But Lily wasn’t there.
My heart stopped.
“Where is she?””
Vanessa gasped behind me.
“No.””
She rushed into the room.
“Lily?””
I searched the bathroom.
Empty.
The closet.
Empty.
The space under the bed.
Empty.
Then my father pointed.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
The balcony door.
Open.
Every muscle in my body went tight.
The curtain moved slightly from the cold air coming inside.
The same balcony.
The same place where I had found my daughter earlier.
Only this time, she was gone.
“No,” Vanessa whispered.
I stepped outside.
The balcony was empty.
But there was something on the floor.
A small pink bracelet.
Lily’s bracelet.
The one she wore every day.
I picked it up.
My fingers trembled.
“She wouldn’t take this off,” I said.
Michael looked over the balcony railing.
“Someone was here.””
My father crouched down.
He examined the floor.
There were marks.
Small footprints.
And beside them…
A larger shoe print.
My stomach turned.
Someone had been in my daughter’s room.
Someone had taken her.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
I looked at her.
For the first time all night, I didn’t see my wife.
I saw a mother who was terrified.
“Call the police.””
Michael grabbed his phone.
“I already am.””
My father walked toward the door.
“Everyone downstairs. Now.””
“No,” I said.
My father looked at me.
“We need to search the house.””
“I’m not leaving this room.””
His expression softened.
“I know.””
Then he looked at Michael.
“Help me check the hallway.””
The next five minutes felt like five hours.
Every second without hearing Lily’s voice felt impossible.
I checked every corner of her room again.
Her drawings.
Her toys.
Her bed.
Anything.
Everything.
Because somehow, if I looked hard enough, I thought I would find her.
Like this was just a nightmare.
Like I would wake up.
Then I saw something.
A piece of paper underneath her pillow.
I grabbed it.
My heart raced.
It was folded into a small square.
I opened it.
Three words.
*ASK GRANDPA WHY.*
I stared at the note.
My hands went numb.
“Dad?””
My father came back into the room.
He saw my face.
“What is it?””
I handed him the paper.
The second he read it, his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know this?””
I stepped closer.
“Dad.””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad, look at me.””
Edward slowly lifted his eyes.
And that was when I knew.
My father knew something.
“You know what this means.””
He took a deep breath.
“I hoped I was wrong.””
The words made my blood run cold.
“Wrong about what?””
Before he could answer, Vanessa entered the room.
“Did you find anything?””
She saw the paper.
Then she saw my father’s face.
And immediately, she understood.
“You knew?””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at Edward.
“You knew about this?””
My father looked between us.
“I knew there were things hidden.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He sighed.
“I knew Michael was alive.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I had been hit.
“You knew?””
My father nodded.
“For a short time.””
“How long?””
He looked away.
“Seven years.””
Seven years.
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You knew Michael was alive for seven years?””
“Daniel—”
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“You let me raise Lily while you knew there was another man out there?””
Edward’s face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone is protecting me while lying to me.””
My father stepped closer.
“I didn’t know the entire truth.””
“Then what did you know?””
He looked at the note again.
“I knew someone was watching your family.””
The words chilled me.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Dad.””
“I swear.””
He looked at me.
“But I knew Vanessa was hiding something.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“You suspected me?””
“I suspected everyone.””
My father’s voice became heavy.
“Because years ago, I found something.””
“What?””
He reached into his jacket pocket.
And pulled out an old photograph.
Another photograph.
This one was faded.
He handed it to me.
It showed Vanessa.
Michael.
And another person.
A person standing behind them.
A person I recognized immediately.
My knees almost gave out.
Because the person standing beside them was someone I had seen at every family gathering for years.
Someone who had hugged Lily.
Someone who had kissed her forehead.
Someone who had sat at our dinner table.
My father watched my reaction.
“You know him.””
I stared at the picture.
“Yes.””
My voice was barely audible.
“Who is he?”” Vanessa asked.
I looked at her.
“You tell me.””
She looked at the photo.
Then her face changed.
“No.””
Michael stepped closer.
“What?””
Vanessa backed away.
“No.””
My father looked at her.
“You recognize him.””
She shook her head.
“This isn’t possible.””
“Who is he?”” I demanded.
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
Then she whispered a name.
A name that made the entire mystery suddenly feel much darker.
“My brother.””
I froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the photograph.
The man standing beside Michael and Vanessa wasn’t a stranger.
He was family.
“Your brother?”” I asked.
She nodded slowly.
“My older brother.””
Michael’s face became pale.
“He was there that night.””
“What night?”” I asked.
Michael looked at me.
“The night my car crashed.””
The room went silent.
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Your brother knew?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know.””
Michael looked at her.
“You didn’t?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“He told me you were dead.””
Nobody spoke.
The pieces started falling into place.
The warning messages.
The letters.
The lies.
The missing years.
And now Vanessa’s brother.
The man who had been close to my family.
The man who had access to Lily.
My phone suddenly rang.
Everyone jumped.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I answered.
“Who is this?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a voice.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that belonged to someone who had been standing in my home many times.
Someone who had smiled at me.
Someone who had called me family.
“Daniel.””
My blood froze.
“Where is my daughter?””
A quiet laugh came through the phone.
Then the voice said:
“You should have asked Vanessa the truth eight years ago.””
I tightened my grip.
“Where is Lily?””
Another pause.
Then:
“She’s safe.””
I closed my eyes.
“Let me talk to her.””
The person on the other end ignored me.
Instead, they whispered:
“But you’re not going to like what she knows.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then I heard something.
A sound.
A small voice.
Coming from the speaker.
The call hadn’t disconnected.
And Lily was crying.
“Daddy…” she whispered.
Then another voice said:
“Tell him what you saw.””
And my daughter answered:
“I saw who locked me outside.””
My entire body went cold.
Because the next words I heard were not from Lily.
May you like
They were from the person holding her.
“It wasn’t Vanessa.””
