Chapter 9: The Person My Father Trusted Most

The message remained on my screen.

*Your father didn’t create this plan to stop Daniel.*

I read it again.

Then again.

My hands felt cold.

Because after everything I had discovered, I thought I finally understood the shape of the betrayal.

Daniel.

Madison.

My mother.

A marriage built on lies.

A company nearly stolen.

A family torn apart.

But my father’s warning suggested something else.

Something bigger.

Something I had not seen.

Someone behind the people I already knew.

I looked around the room.

Everyone looked different now.

Not because they had changed.

Because I had.

The woman who walked into this house hours ago believed she knew her family.

Now I knew better.

“Who sent that?””

Mr. Bennett looked at the number.

“Unknown.””

“Can you trace it?””

“I can try.””

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Emma, you need to stop.””

I turned toward him.

The fact that he was telling me to stop made me want to keep going.

“Why?””

“Because you’re destroying everything.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m uncovering what you destroyed.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I held up the phone.

“My father knew.””

Daniel went silent.

That was the reaction I was looking for.

“You knew he knew.””

He looked away.

“Daniel.””

He didn’t answer.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

“What did my father find?””

His face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

A memory.

“I don’t know.””

I watched him carefully.

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

“You always do the same thing.””

He frowned.

“What?””

“You think lying means saying something false.””

I stepped closer.

“But sometimes lying is choosing what not to say.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“Emma…”

I looked at her.

“Do you know who helped Daniel?””

Her face went pale.

“No.””

I believed she was afraid.

But I didn’t know if she was telling the truth.

Not anymore.

Madison suddenly spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Madison.””

She ignored him.

“I know who helped him.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at my mother.

“Your father’s business partner.””

I froze.

“My father didn’t have a business partner.””

Madison gave a sad smile.

“That’s what you were told.””

My mind raced.

My father built Carter Design Group from nothing.

Everyone knew that story.

A small office.

A borrowed computer.

A dream.

A company with his name.

“No.””

Madison opened her phone.

“I found emails.””

She showed me the screen.

An old message.

The sender name was unfamiliar.

*Richard Vale.*

My mother immediately reacted.

I noticed.

“You know him.””

She looked away.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Madison continued.

“He was your father’s first investor.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father never told me about an investor.””

“He removed him.””

“Why?””

Madison looked at Daniel.

“Because he discovered Richard was moving company money.””

I stared.

“And Daniel?””

She nodded.

“Richard found Daniel years later.””

Everything connected.

The late nights.

The documents.

The attempts to gain control.

Daniel wasn’t the beginning.

He was a piece.

A piece someone else moved.

Mr. Bennett took the phone.

“This changes everything.””

“How?””

He looked at the emails.

“If Richard Vale has been involved since the beginning, then the ownership attempts may not have been about Daniel personally.””

“What were they about?””

He looked at me.

“Your company.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

My company.

The thing everyone wanted.

The thing people kept pretending was secondary.

But every betrayal led back to it.

Madison looked at me.

“There’s more.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course there is.””

She handed me another file.

“This was hidden with the agreement.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Not from my father.

From Richard.

The date was one year after my wedding.

My eyes moved across the page.

*Daniel, the arrangement has taken longer than expected.*

My breathing slowed.

*Emma remains more difficult to influence than predicted.*

I almost smiled.

Even they underestimated me.

The letter continued.

*Her loyalty to the company is stronger than anticipated.*

Another line:

*You need to secure her trust before attempting the final transfer.*

Final transfer.

I looked at Daniel.

“You were still trying.””

He didn’t respond.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*If necessary, use the child.*

My hand covered my mouth.

Lily.

No.

I couldn’t read anymore.

I threw the letter onto the table.

Daniel immediately said:

“I never wanted to hurt Lily.””

I looked at him.

“You signed it.””

“I didn’t write that.””

“But you accepted it.””

He had no answer.

My mother started crying.

“I should have told you.””

I turned.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you?””

She looked broken.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Everyone looked at her.

She wiped her tears.

“Your father knew Richard was dangerous.””

My heart stopped.

“Then why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because you were about to get married.””

“That makes no sense.””

“He thought if you knew everything, you would make a decision out of fear.””

I stared.

“He trusted me to choose.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you?””

She looked down.

“I lost that trust.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was the first honest thing she had said all night.

Mr. Bennett checked his phone.

“I found something.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The number that sent the message.””

My heart jumped.

“You traced it?””

“Yes.””

“Who is it?””

He looked serious.

“The message came from a registered business account.””

“What business?””

He turned the screen toward me.

The name appeared.

*Vale Holdings.*

Richard Vale.

I felt a chill.

“He knows.””

Mr. Bennett nodded.

“He knows you found the documents.””

Daniel suddenly moved toward the door.

Everyone noticed.

“Where are you going?””

He stopped.

“I need to handle this.””

I stared.

“Handle what?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

Slowly, he turned around.

For the first time, I saw something unexpected.

Not arrogance.

Not confidence.

Regret.

“I made a mistake.””

I almost laughed.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

“You destroyed my marriage.””

“I know.””

“You used my daughter.””

“I know.””

“You tried to take my company.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“And I know I can’t undo it.””

The room became quiet.

Then he said:

“But Richard will.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at my mother.

Then at me.

“He was never planning to let me keep anything.””

I stared.

“What?””

“Emma…”

He took a breath.

“I was supposed to get control of Carter Design Group.””

“And?””

“And transfer it to Richard.””

Silence.

Even Madison looked shocked.

“So you were never the winner.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked down.

“I was just the person he used.””

The truth landed differently.

Not because I felt sorry for him.

Because I finally understood.

Daniel wasn’t the mastermind.

He was the man who thought he was smart enough to play a dangerous game.

And now the game was consuming him too.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

From Vale Holdings.

I opened it.

A video file.

No text.

Just a recording.

Mr. Bennett connected it to the television.

The screen turned on.

And my father appeared.

My breath stopped.

It was impossible.

My father had been dead for years.

But there he was.

Sitting at his desk.

Looking directly into the camera.

“Emma,” he said.

My knees almost gave out.

Lily came downstairs after hearing the voices.

She stood beside me.

My father continued.

“If you are watching this, then the people I feared have finally shown themselves.””

I covered my mouth.

His eyes looked tired.

But calm.

“I wanted to tell you the truth myself.””

A pause.

“But I knew they would try to stop me.””

The video continued.

“I need you to understand something.””

My father leaned closer.

“Daniel Carter was never the greatest danger.””

Everyone became silent.

Then my father said the words that changed everything.

“The person you need to be careful of is the one who has been protecting you.””

My eyes slowly moved toward my mother.

She stopped breathing.

Because she knew.

My father continued.

“Emma, if your mother tells you she did this for you…”

The screen flickered.

Static filled the room.

Then his voice returned.

“Ask her about the night I died.””

The video cut off.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I turned toward my mother.

She was crying.

Not pretending.

Not hiding.

Crying.

“What happened the night Dad died?””

She looked at me.

And whispered:

“Emma…”

Her voice broke.

“I was there.””

I felt the room disappear.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“And I wasn’t alone.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“Who was with you?””

My mother looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

And said:

“The person who killed your father’s trust.””

A long silence.

May you like

Then she whispered the name.

“Richard Vale.””
