Chapter 8: The Five-Year Marriage Contract
I stood in Lily’s bedroom doorway, unable to move.
Five years.
That number kept repeating in my mind.
Five years.
Not a lifetime.
Not a promise.
Not the forever Daniel whispered when he held my hands under the wedding arch.
A deadline.
A plan.
A countdown.
I looked at my daughter sleeping against my shoulder.
She trusted me.
She believed I could fix things.
And downstairs, the man who promised to protect her had been calculating the exact moment he could destroy her family.
I gently brushed Lily’s hair away from her face.
“Mommy needs to make a phone call.””
She looked up.
“Are you leaving?””
The question hurt.
Because everyone kept leaving.
Except me.
“I’m not leaving.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I promise.””
This time, I understood something.
A promise only mattered when the person making it had the courage to keep it.
I walked downstairs.
Daniel and my mother were still in the living room.
They stopped talking when they saw me.
That alone told me everything.
They were afraid of what I knew.
I held up my phone.
“The five-year agreement.””
Daniel’s face changed.
My mother closed her eyes.
Neither of them asked how I found out.
Because they already knew.
“You made a deal,” I said.
Daniel stood.
“Emma—”
“No.””
I walked toward him.
“You don’t get to interrupt.””
He stopped.
“You made a deal with my mother.””
Silence.
“You married me with a plan to leave after five years.””
His expression hardened.
“It wasn’t like that.””
I looked at him.
“Everyone says that.””
I glanced at my mother.
“You.””
Then at Daniel.
“You.””
“Every person who hurts someone says the same thing.””
My mother whispered:
“Emma, please.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
She flinched.
“You don’t get to ask me for patience.””
My voice shook.
“You had twelve years to tell me the truth.””
She looked down.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I need you to understand why.””
I laughed softly.
“Why?””
“Yes.””
He ran his hands through his hair.
“Your company was growing too fast.””
I stared.
“What?””
“You were working constantly.””
“That was because I was building it.””
“You didn’t understand the pressure.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t love me.””
His face changed.
“I did.””
“No.””
The word came out calmly.
“I don’t think you did.””
He looked hurt.
But I didn’t stop.
“I think you loved what being with me gave you.””
“That’s not true.””
“Then tell me.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me why you needed an agreement to leave me.””
He had no answer.
My mother finally spoke.
“Daniel wanted security.””
I turned toward her.
“Security?””
She nodded sadly.
“He was afraid that if things went wrong, he would have nothing.””
I stared.
“So he protected himself.””
“Yes.””
“And who protected me?””
Her eyes filled.
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had.
Mr. Bennett placed the documents on the table.
“I have reviewed the agreement.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
The room went quiet.
Mr. Bennett raised an eyebrow.
“I’m sorry?””
Daniel immediately realized what he had said.
Too late.
“You knew about it.””
Mr. Bennett looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, I suspected there was another arrangement, but I never had proof.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You hid it from your lawyer?””
“No.””
“You hid it from everyone.””
He looked away.
That was confirmation.
I picked up the agreement.
The pages were old.
The signatures were clear.
Daniel Carter.
Evelyn Carter.
The two people I trusted most.
I read the first paragraph.
*The marriage between Daniel Carter and Emma Carter will remain beneficial for both parties as long as mutual objectives are achieved.*
I stopped.
My stomach turned.
“Mutual objectives?””
I looked at Daniel.
“What was I?””
He didn’t answer.
“A business opportunity?””
“Emma.””
“A company connection?””
“Stop.””
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“I want to know.””
The tears came, but I refused to wipe them away.
“I want to know what I was to you.””
Daniel looked at me.
And for a second, I saw regret.
Real regret.
But regret after being caught was not the same as love.
“You were never just that.””
“Then what was I?””
He whispered:
“You were everything.””
I looked at him.
“Then why did you plan an ending?””
Silence.
Because there was no answer.
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
Madison stood there.
She looked exhausted.
Her makeup was ruined.
The confident woman from earlier was gone.
Now she looked like someone who had finally realized she had been used too.
“I need to talk to Emma.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Madison laughed.
“You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.””
The officers looked toward Mr. Bennett.
He nodded slightly.
“She can speak.””
Madison walked inside.
She placed a folder on the table.
“This is the original.””
I looked at it.
“The agreement?””
She nodded.
“I found it hidden behind a false wall in your mother’s study.””
My mother looked shocked.
“How?””
Madison looked at her.
“You never told Daniel I found it.””
My mother’s face changed.
Because that was the first time she realized Madison had been hiding information too.
I opened the folder.
Inside were handwritten notes.
Not just legal documents.
Personal notes.
One page had Daniel’s handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
*Five years should be enough time to gain trust and access.*
My vision blurred.
Another line:
*After ownership changes, separation will be easier.*
I stopped reading.
I couldn’t.
Madison watched me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
The apology surprised me.
“You’re sorry?””
She nodded.
“I thought he loved me.””
The room became quiet.
“I thought I was the exception.””
She laughed bitterly.
“I thought he chose me because I was special.””
Her eyes moved toward Daniel.
“But he never chose anyone.””
Daniel looked angry.
“Madison.””
“No.””
She stepped back.
“You made me believe she was the problem.””
She pointed toward me.
“You told me she was controlling.””
She looked at Lily’s staircase.
“You told me she didn’t understand you.””
Her voice broke.
“And all this time, you were just waiting for the right moment to take everything.””
Daniel said nothing.
Madison looked at me.
“I know you hate me.””
I stayed silent.
“Maybe you should.””
She swallowed.
“But I needed you to know.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because I found something else.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
She opened another envelope.
“This was inside the box too.””
She handed it to me.
The envelope had my father’s name.
But this time, it wasn’t addressed to me.
It was addressed to Daniel.
I opened it.
The handwriting was my father’s.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, then you have chosen the wrong path.*
I looked at Daniel.
He went pale.
I continued.
*I gave you a chance because Emma loved you. I wanted to believe you could become the man she deserved.*
The next sentence made my hands shake.
*But if you continue with this plan, you will discover something too late.*
I turned the page.
Only one line remained.
*Emma is not the person you should fear losing.*
I frowned.
Then I read the final sentence.
*She is the person you should fear standing against.*
The room was silent.
Because my father had known.
He knew Daniel would try.
He knew everyone would underestimate me.
And maybe he knew something I had forgotten.
I wasn’t weak because I loved people.
I was dangerous because I had spent years building something they were trying to steal.
Mr. Bennett looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter.””
I looked up.
“Yes?””
“There’s one more issue.””
“What?””
He opened his briefcase.
“The agreement Daniel signed may not only protect your company.””
He placed a document down.
“It may prove criminal intent.””
Daniel immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Mr. Bennett continued.
“If this document shows he entered the marriage intending to gain control through deception…”
Daniel’s face went white.
“No.””
For the first time, he sounded afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Then my phone rang.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You found the agreement. Good. Now find out who actually wrote it.*
I stared at the screen.
Because the sender wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Madison.
It wasn’t my mother.
The number was unknown.
Another message appeared.
*Your father didn’t create this plan to stop Daniel.*
A pause.
Then:
*He created it because he knew Daniel wasn’t working alone.*
I slowly looked around the room.
At Daniel.
At my mother.
At Madison.
And I realized something terrifying.
The betrayal I had uncovered was only the surface.
Someone else had been watching.
May you like
Someone else had been controlling the pieces.
And whoever sent that message knew exactly what my father knew before he died.
