Chapter 7: The Documents Hidden Behind My Mother’s Door

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The phone remained pressed against my ear.

Madison’s words echoed through the room.

*Your mother helped him create the plan.*

I looked at my mother.

She looked away.

That was enough.

A person who has nothing to hide does not look away.

“Mom.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

She closed her eyes.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Don’t explain yet.””

Her lips parted.

I raised my hand.

“Not yet.””

Because I was afraid.

Not of the truth.

I was afraid that after everything I had discovered, there was still more.

More secrets.

More people who knew.

More moments where I had been the only person left outside the room.

I looked at Madison’s name flashing on the phone screen.

“Where are you?””

A long pause.

“Not far.””

“Where?””

“I don’t think you’ll believe me.””

I laughed quietly.

“You should try.””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“I’m at your mother’s house.””

Everyone froze.

My mother stood immediately.

“What?””

I turned toward her.

“You heard her.””

My mother’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Fear.

“What are you doing there?”” she demanded.

Madison laughed bitterly through the phone.

“Funny. That’s the first thing you ask.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Madison, leave.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I’m done doing what Daniel tells me.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Madison.””

I looked at him.

“You knew she was there?””

He didn’t answer.

Again.

Silence.

Always silence.

Madison heard it.

“See?””

She laughed softly.

“He never tells the truth when he’s cornered.””

I walked toward the table.

“Madison, tell me exactly what you found.””

Another pause.

“I found a box.””

“What kind of box?””

“A locked metal box.””

My mother went pale.

I noticed.

“What’s inside?””

Madison’s voice lowered.

“Everything.””

I looked at my mother.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Then Madison said:

“It means Daniel didn’t start this two years ago.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“He started planning this before you got married.””

The room went completely silent.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“That’s not true.””

Madison ignored him.

“I found emails.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Between who?””

“Daniel and your mother.””

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

My mother looked at me.

“Emma…”

“No.””

I backed away.

Because I couldn’t hear it.

Not again.

Not another person.

Not another betrayal.

Madison continued.

“There are messages from before your wedding.””

My voice shook.

“What do they say?””

She hesitated.

Then:

“They say your mother knew Daniel wanted control of Carter Design Group.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked broken.

“Is it true?””

She didn’t answer.

And that was the answer.

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“You’re listening to a woman who was trying to steal your husband.””

I turned toward him.

“You don’t get to use Madison as the unreliable one.””

His expression changed.

“You trust her now?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“I trust the fact that everyone keeps proving me right.””

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Mr. Bennett stepped forward.

“We need those documents.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

Madison answered.

“I can send photos.””

“Send them.””

A few seconds later, my phone started receiving images.

The first was a printed email.

The date was twelve years ago.

Before my wedding.

The sender:

*Daniel Carter*

The recipient:

*Evelyn Carter*

My mother.

I opened it.

The first line made my stomach twist.

*Evelyn, I understand your concerns, but you need to trust that I know what I’m doing.*

I scrolled.

*Emma will never agree to give me control voluntarily. We need patience.*

My hands started shaking.

I looked at my mother.

She covered her mouth.

The second page appeared.

*Once the marriage is official, my position changes. She will trust me more.*

I stopped reading.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma…”

I turned the phone toward him.

“Explain.””

He stared at the screen.

No words.

The third image arrived.

This one was handwritten.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

*Daniel, I agreed to help because I believe Emma needs stability. But if you hurt her, I will reveal everything.*

I looked up.

Everything became clear.

My mother had not been innocent.

But she also had not been completely on Daniel’s side.

She had made a deal.

A terrible one.

A dangerous one.

A deal that involved my life.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled.

“I was trying to control the damage.””

“By helping him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“By staying close enough to stop him.””

I stared.

“You thought you could secretly manage my marriage?””

“I thought I could protect you.””

“You keep saying that.””

My voice broke.

“But you never asked me what I wanted.””

She looked down.

That hurt more than any confession.

Because she knew.

She knew I was right.

Daniel suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

It was bitter.

“You all want to blame me.””

I stared.

“Because you’re guilty.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He pointed around the room.

“Look at this.””

His eyes moved from my mother to me.

“Your father didn’t trust me.””

“Your mother investigated me.””

“Mr. Bennett prepared legal traps.””

He looked at me.

“And you secretly recorded me.””

The accusation surprised me.

“You’re angry because we protected ourselves?””

“No.””

His voice rose.

“I’m angry because none of you ever saw me as family.””

I stared at him.

“You were planning to steal my life.””

“I was trying to build my own.””

“On top of mine.””

Silence.

Then Madison spoke again.

“Emma.””

I looked at the phone.

“There’s one more thing.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“The box had a second folder.””

“What was inside?””

Her voice became quieter.

“Something about Lily.””

Everything stopped.

“What about Lily?””

Nobody moved.

Even Daniel looked nervous.

Madison continued.

“I didn’t understand it at first.””

“What did you find?””

“A document with her name.””

My heart started pounding.

“My daughter?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What did you do?””

He immediately shook his head.

“Nothing.””

That answer was too fast.

“What did you do?””

“Emma, listen—”

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“What did you do with my daughter’s documents?””

Daniel looked at my mother.

That tiny movement told me everything.

My mother saw it too.

And she whispered:

“Daniel…”

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked devastated.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“About what?””

She didn’t answer.

Madison’s voice came through the phone.

“The document says Daniel wanted legal guardianship rights over Lily.””

The room went silent.

I felt sick.

“Why?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Madison said:

“Because he believed if he controlled Lily, he could control you.””

I looked at Daniel.

The man who used to carry my daughter on his shoulders.

The man who taught her how to ride a bike.

The man she called Dad.

“You wanted to use our child against me?””

His eyes filled.

“Emma, it wasn’t like that.””

“Then what was it like?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would leave me.””

I stared.

“You were afraid I would leave you after you planned to take everything from me?””

He had no answer.

Mr. Bennett quietly gathered the documents.

“We need copies of everything.””

I nodded.

My mind was racing.

But one thought kept repeating.

Lily.

My daughter.

The person I had to protect.

Not my marriage.

Not my company.

Not my pride.

Her.

I walked upstairs.

Lily was sitting on her bed.

She looked up when I entered.

“Mom?””

I sat beside her.

She immediately hugged me.

“Is Dad coming back?””

I closed my eyes.

I hated that she was asking.

I hated that she had to.

“I don’t know, sweetheart.””

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“I don’t want a new family.””

My heart broke.

“You won’t lose your family.””

She looked at me.

“Even if Dad leaves?””

I held her tighter.

“Even then.””

A few minutes later, my phone rang again.

Madison.

I answered.

“What?””

Her voice was urgent.

“Emma, you need to listen carefully.””

I stood.

“What happened?””

“I found one more document.””

“What document?””

A pause.

Then:

“The original agreement between Daniel and your mother.””

I froze.

“There was an agreement?””

“Yes.””

My voice lowered.

“What did it say?””

Madison took a breath.

“It said your mother would help Daniel gain access to your company…”

My heart stopped.

“And in return?””

Silence.

Then Madison whispered:

“In return, Daniel promised he would leave you after five years.””

I felt cold.

Five years.

Not forever.

Not a marriage.

A contract.

A countdown.

Madison continued.

“But Emma…”

“What?””

Her voice shook.

“The five years ended yesterday.””

I looked out the bedroom window.

Downstairs, Daniel was standing beside my mother.

Both of them looking up toward me.

And suddenly I understood.

Tonight wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.

It was the deadline.

May you like

And Daniel hadn’t come home because he wanted to explain.

He came home because his time was up.
