Chapter 7

The police did not arrest Julian that night.

Not yet.

But they documented everything.

He left with a small overnight bag under supervision.

Eleanor left separately after agreeing to appear for questioning.

I stood alone in my living room after midnight.

The projector screen was blank now.

My marriage was over.

But I still didn’t know what Thursday meant.

Rachel arrived in person the next morning.

She brought coffee and a legal pad.

“We need to separate the divorce from the criminal investigation.”

“Can we?”

“Emotionally? Probably not. Legally, yes.”

She began listing assets.

My inherited house.

My retirement accounts.

Julian’s business interests.

Vale House liabilities.

Then she found another surprise.

“Julian changed your emergency contact information.”

I frowned.

“Where?”

“Your medical portal.”

My stomach tightened.

“To who?”

“Himself as primary. Eleanor as secondary.”

“That was already true.”

Rachel shook her head.

“The issue is the date.”

Three weeks earlier.

He had also uploaded an advance medical directive.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I stared at it.

“I never signed that.”

Rachel’s face hardened.

The directive gave Julian broad authority over medical decisions if I became incapacitated.

My skin went cold.

“Thursday.”

Rachel looked at me.

“What?”

“I have a medical procedure Thursday.”

“What procedure?”

“A minor outpatient endoscopy.”

Her expression changed immediately.

“Who scheduled it?”

“My doctor.”

“Which doctor?”

I opened the appointment.

Dr. Mason Reed.

Rachel typed his name.

Then stopped.

“What?”

“He’s listed as an investor in Vale House.”

I felt sick.

“No.”

“Claire, cancel the procedure.”

I already had my phone in my hand.

The clinic answered.

I canceled immediately.

Then I called my regular physician.

She sounded confused.

“I didn’t refer you to Dr. Reed.”

My heart pounded.

“But his office said you did.”

“No.”

I looked at Rachel.

Someone had arranged a medical procedure I did not need.

A doctor financially connected to Julian.

An advance directive giving Julian control if I became incapacitated.

A secret life insurance policy.

Thursday.

Rachel called Detective Monroe, the officer assigned to the fraud case.

He arrived within an hour.

“This is enough for us to investigate Reed.”

I gave him every document.

Then my doorbell rang.

Serena stood outside.

I almost didn’t open it.

“I found the second phone,” she said.

I stared at her.

“How?”

“Julian left it in my car.”

She handed me a black phone sealed inside a plastic bag.

“I didn’t open it.”

“Why bring it here?”

“Because he called me six times this morning asking whether I had it.”

Detective Monroe stepped forward.

“You did the right thing not accessing it.”

Serena looked relieved.

Then she turned toward me.

“I heard him arguing with Eleanor two weeks ago.”

“About Thursday?”

She nodded.

“What did they say?”

Serena swallowed.

“Eleanor said the procedure only needed to scare you.”

My hands went cold.

“And Julian?”

“He said if something went wrong, the insurance would solve everything.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Detective Monroe took the phone.

Serena started crying.

“I thought he meant financial insurance.”

I stared at her.

“Did you?”

She couldn’t answer.

Then the phone vibrated inside the evidence bag.

A message appeared on the lock screen.

FROM: DR. REED

Claire canceled. We have a problem.

Detective Monroe looked at me.

“No.”

I stared at Julian’s second phone.

May you like

“They have a problem.”

For the first time since the party, I understood exactly how serious my situation was.
