Chapter

Eleanor denied owning E.H. Consulting.
The police officer asked for identification.
Then Rachel found the business registration.
Eleanor Hale.
Sole owner.
Same home address she had used for Julian’s hidden mortgage correspondence.
Julian stared at his mother.
“You told me those were contractor payments.”
She hissed, “Not now.”
I almost smiled.
For once, Julian was discovering what it felt like to be the last person in the room to know the truth.
“How much did she take?” I asked Rachel.
“At least three hundred twenty thousand over two years.”
Julian stepped toward Eleanor.
“You stole from Vale House?”
“I was repaying myself.”
“For what?”
“Money I invested.”
“You never invested three hundred thousand.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“I paid for your education. Your wedding. Your first apartment.”
Julian stared at her.
“You took company money because you think I owe you for raising me?”
“That is not what I said.”
“It’s exactly what you said.”
Serena sat quietly near the window.
Then she whispered, “There are invoices.”
Everyone turned.
“What invoices?” I asked.
She pulled up another folder from the shared cloud storage.
E.H. Consulting had billed Vale House for “strategic development services.”
No detailed work.
No deliverables.
Just monthly invoices.
Julian looked furious.
“You told me these were legal expenses.”
Eleanor snapped, “And you told Claire you were faithful.”
That silenced him.
I watched them turn on each other.
For years, Eleanor treated Julian like royalty.
Julian worshiped her approval.
Now money was revealing how shallow that loyalty really was.
The officer asked Eleanor to remain available for questioning.
She immediately reached for her purse.
“I’m leaving.”
“No,” he said.
“I’m not under arrest.”
“Not currently.”
She froze.
Then Serena stood.
“I need to go.”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“I’m sorry.”
I felt nothing soft toward her.
“You knowingly came into my house to sleep with my husband.”
She lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“You believed his marriage was ending?”
“Yes.”
“You still chose my bedroom.”
Her face reddened.
“I don’t have an excuse.”
“Good.”
I opened the door.
“Then don’t give me one.”
She stepped outside.
Before leaving, she turned.
“Claire.”
I looked at her.
“Julian has another phone.”
He exploded.
“Serena!”
She continued.
“He keeps it in his car.”
The officer immediately looked at Julian.
“What phone?”
“Work phone.”
Serena shook her head.
“No. The black one.”
Julian’s face went white.
I stared at him.
“What’s on it?”
“Nothing.”
Serena looked at me.
“He never lets me touch it.”
The officer asked Julian whether he would voluntarily provide the device.
“No.”
His answer came too quickly.
Rachel said, “Claire, do not search his car yourself.”
I wouldn’t.
The police could handle that.
But Julian’s panic told me the phone mattered.
Then his smartwatch buzzed.
He looked down instinctively.
I caught the notification.
UNKNOWN CONTACT:
Did she find out about Thursday?
Julian immediately covered the screen.
I stared at him.
“What happens Thursday?”
“Nothing.”
The officer noticed too.
“Mr. Hale?”
Julian refused to answer.
Then Eleanor began crying.
Not quietly.
Not gracefully.
She grabbed Julian’s sleeve.
“You said Thursday was canceled.”
The room froze.
I looked from mother to son.
“What was supposed to happen Thursday?”
Julian whispered, “Mom, shut up.”
May you like
She stared at him in terror.
And I knew whatever they had planned was much worse than another affair.
