Chapter 10

Julian requested to speak with me.

I refused.

Then he offered to sign a sworn statement about Eleanor.

Rachel advised me not to meet privately.

So we sat across from each other in a conference room with both attorneys present.

Julian looked nothing like the man Eleanor had praised at our family party.

His expensive shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

His wedding ring was gone.

“Claire.”

I said nothing.

“I’m sorry.”

Still nothing.

He looked down.

“I know that’s meaningless.”

“At least you’ve learned something.”

He flinched.

Then his attorney placed a document on the table.

Julian was offering information regarding Vale House, Eleanor, and the forged trust documents.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

I almost laughed.

Julian looked at me.

“I want to tell you the truth.”

“Try it.”

He took a breath.

“Yes, Mom arranged our meeting.”

My stomach tightened even though I already knew.

“She told me you were connected to valuable property.”

“And you dated me because of it.”

“At first.”

I laughed.

There it was.

The phrase liars loved.

At first.

“I did fall in love with you.”

“You slept with Serena in my bedroom.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I signed some documents.”

“Some?”

“Mom handled others.”

“You borrowed against my house.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the insurance policy.”

“Yes.”

“Did you want me dead?”

His head snapped up.

“No.”

The room went silent.

“Then explain Thursday.”

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“Mom said Reed would create a medical complication.”

My blood turned cold.

“What kind?”

“Nothing permanent.”

My attorney interrupted.

“You understand how absurd that sounds?”

Julian nodded miserably.

“The idea was that Claire would remain sedated longer than expected. I would use the medical directive to delay discharge.”

“Why?”

He looked at me.

“Because Thursday was also the Vale House refinancing deadline.”

I stared.

“You needed me incapacitated.”

“For one day.”

“To do what?”

“To sign documents electronically under your authority.”

I felt sick.

“You were going to use my hospitalization to steal control of the trust.”

“Yes.”

His voice was barely audible.

My attorney asked, “And the insurance?”

Julian looked ashamed.

“Mom opened it.”

“But you knew.”

“Yes.”

“And your comment to Serena?”

He swallowed.

“I was angry. I said something disgusting.”

I believed that more than I wanted to.

Maybe he had not planned to kill me.

Maybe he had only planned to drug me, forge my authority, and steal millions.

That was not much comfort.

“What about Serena?”

Julian looked away.

“Our affair restarted three months ago.”

“Why?”

“No good reason.”

Finally, an honest answer.

I slid the divorce papers toward him.

“Sign.”

He stared at them.

“Claire.”

“Sign.”

His hand shook as he picked up the pen.

He signed.

No argument.

No performance.

When he finished, Rachel took the documents.

Then Detective Monroe entered.

“Mr. Hale, we need you downstairs.”

Julian stood.

Before leaving, he looked at me.

“I know I don’t deserve another chance.”

“You don’t.”

He nodded.

Then he left.

Eleanor was arrested later that afternoon on fraud-related charges while investigators continued examining the medical conspiracy.

Dr. Reed faced his own investigation.

Vale House’s finances were frozen.

And because the Margaret Vale Preservation Trust controlled the land and enough development rights, Rachel obtained an emergency order preventing anyone from selling or refinancing the property.

For the first time, Eleanor had no money she could move.

No son she could command.

No paperwork she could hide behind.

I returned home that evening.

The projector was still mounted above the living room.

The screen where Julian’s betrayal had appeared was blank.

I removed our wedding photograph from upstairs.

Not dramatically.

I simply put it in a box.

Then the doorbell rang.

Serena stood outside.

I almost closed the door.

“I found something,” she said.

“What?”

She held an old envelope.

“Stephen Ward gave this to me before he died.”

“Why didn’t you give it to me sooner?”

“I was scared.”

“Everyone was scared.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

I took the envelope.

My grandmother’s handwriting appeared across the front.

FOR CLAIRE ONLY.

Inside was a letter.

Claire,

If you are reading this, Eleanor has probably discovered the truth about Julian.

I stopped.

My pulse quickened.

What truth about Julian?

I kept reading.

Julian Hale is not Eleanor’s biological son.

My hands began shaking.

The next line was worse.

His biological mother was my daughter, Rebecca Vale.

I stared at Serena.

“My grandmother had another daughter?”

She nodded slowly.

I continued reading.

Rebecca disappeared after giving birth twenty-nine years ago.

Eleanor claimed the baby had been abandoned and raised Julian as her own.

But Margaret had never believed her.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

Julian did not enter your life because Eleanor randomly selected a wealthy heiress.

She selected you because the Vale trust recognizes descendants by blood.

I stopped breathing.

If Julian was Rebecca Vale’s son, then he was also my grandmother’s biological grandson.

Which meant Julian had a legitimate blood connection to the trust.

Serena whispered, “There’s another page.”

I turned it over.

A DNA report was attached.

Margaret Vale.

Julian Hale.

Biological grandparent relationship confirmed.

My stomach dropped.

Then I saw one additional name handwritten beneath the result.

Claire Vale.

TEST REQUIRED BEFORE MARRIAGE.

I stared at it.

“What does this mean?”

Serena looked terrified.

“Stephen thought Margaret was hiding one more family secret.”

“What secret?”

She swallowed.

“That you and Julian might not just be connected through the trust.”

Before I could ask anything else, my phone rang.

Rachel.

Her voice was urgent.

“Claire, don’t sign anything else.”

“I haven’t.”

“We found your original birth records.”

My chest tightened.

“What do they say?”

She went silent for one terrible second.

Then:

“Rebecca Vale wasn’t only Julian’s biological mother.”

I gripped the phone.

“What?”

“She was yours too.”

The room tilted.

Julian was not merely my cheating husband.

May you like

According to the records Rachel had just uncovered, the man I married might be my biological half-brother.
