Chapter 8: The Housekeeper's Secret

Jonathan survived the shooting, but the doctors refused to say whether he would recover fully.

Daniel remained at the hospital until Rachel arrived with two detectives. They questioned him about the meeting, the envelope, and Jonathan's accusation that Vanessa had been following Emma on the night of the accident.

Daniel gave them everything he had.

He handed over the letters, the medical report, and the copies of the trust documents. He also showed them the threatening messages and the photograph of Vanessa's car leaving the cemetery.

One detective, a broad-shouldered man named Sergeant Miller, studied the evidence with a deeply troubled expression.

“Mr. Whitmore, your wife has been connected to several suspicious events. But suspicion isn't enough. We need something that directly places her at the scene of the accident and connects her to the recent crimes.””

“Then find the original agreement,” Daniel said.

“Michael believed she had it.””

Rachel folded her arms.

“Jonathan said Anna knows where it is.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why would Anna know?””

“Because Emma trusted her.””

“She has worked for my family for years. If she knew where the document was, why wouldn't she tell me?””

Rachel held his gaze.

“Perhaps she was afraid.””

Daniel thought of the way Anna had shielded Lily with her own body, how she had kept the old letter for years, and how she had refused to leave the child alone with Vanessa.

He had always considered Anna a loyal employee.

He had never asked himself what she might have sacrificed to protect his family.

“I need to speak to her,” he said.

Rachel nodded.

“We'll come with you.””

They arrived at the lake house just after six in the evening.

Anna was sitting in the kitchen with Lily, helping her color a picture of a house surrounded by flowers. When Daniel entered with the detectives, she immediately put down the colored pencils.

“What's happened?””

“Jonathan was shot,” Daniel said.

Anna covered her mouth.

“Oh, no.””

“He told me you know where Emma hid the original trust agreement.””

Her expression changed.

It was small, but unmistakable.

Lily looked up from her drawing.

“Anna?””

The housekeeper reached for the little girl's hand.

“It's all right, sweetheart.””

Daniel waited until Rachel escorted Lily into the living room with one of the detectives.

Then he pulled out a chair.

“Anna, I need the truth.””

She sat opposite him, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

“I know.””

“Did Emma tell you where the document was?””

Anna nodded.

“Before she died, she gave me an envelope. She said I must never open it unless Vanessa tried to take Lily away or someone threatened the child.””

“Where is it?””

“In a place Vanessa would never think to search.””

“Where?””

Anna looked toward the staircase.

“Inside Lily's first teddy bear.””

Daniel stared at her.

“The brown bear in her bedroom?””

“Yes. Mrs. Emma removed the stuffing from one of its paws and placed a small waterproof packet inside. She asked me to sew it closed.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Vanessa searched Lily's room after the funeral. She took the blue jewelry box, the photographs, and anything she thought might contain evidence. I was afraid that if I revealed the bear, she would destroy it too.””

Daniel felt anger and shame collide in his chest.

“You let me believe Emma had left nothing behind.””

“I thought I was protecting Lily.””

“You should have trusted me.””

“I wanted to.”” Anna's voice cracked.

“But Mrs. Emma told me that if Vanessa ever learned the truth, she would use Lily against you. She said you would be the first person Vanessa tried to break because she knew how much you loved your daughter.””

Daniel fell silent.

Emma had understood Vanessa better than he ever had.

He rose and went upstairs with Anna.

The teddy bear sat on a shelf beside Lily's bed. Its brown fur had faded, and one button eye was missing. Daniel remembered buying it at a street fair when Lily was only a few months old.

Anna took the bear down and carefully opened a line of stitches beneath its left paw.

A small waterproof packet slid out.

Inside was a sealed envelope, a miniature memory card, and a folded document bearing the original signatures of Daniel and Emma.

The title read:

*WHITMORE FAMILY TRUST — ORIGINAL PROTECTIVE AGREEMENT*

Daniel's hands shook as he opened it.

The agreement contained a clause he had never seen in the later amendments. It stated that if any person attempted to obtain guardianship of Lily through forged documents, coercion, or the concealment of material evidence, that person would be permanently disqualified from managing the child's trust.

It also named Anna as a temporary emergency custodian if both parents became unavailable.

Daniel stared at the signature beneath the clause.

Emma's signature was genuine.

His own signature was genuine.

This was the original agreement.

The document Vanessa had tried to destroy.

At the bottom, Emma had written a note.

This agreement protects Lily, but it does not explain why Vanessa is so desperate to control the trust. The memory card contains the proof.

Daniel looked at the tiny card.

“What is on this?””

Anna shook her head.

“Mrs. Emma told me never to play it. She said only you should hear it.””

They returned to the kitchen, where Rachel examined the document and photographed every page. She arranged for a forensic specialist to inspect the memory card.

But Daniel couldn't wait.

He asked Rachel whether the file could be copied without altering the original. After she confirmed that a secure copy could be made, he placed the card into a reader connected to his laptop.

A video appeared.

The footage was dark and slightly grainy, recorded from what looked like a small camera in Emma's car.

The timestamp showed October 14, four years earlier.

Emma was sitting behind the steering wheel, crying.

Her voice was clear.

“You have to leave me alone, Vanessa. I won't sign anything else.””

Vanessa's voice came from outside the car.

“You don't understand what you've done.””

“I understand perfectly. You've been stealing from Daniel's company, and you used Rebecca's death to cover it up.””

Daniel froze.

On the screen, Vanessa leaned toward the open driver's window.

“You can't prove that.””

“I have the records. I have the bank transfers. And I have the original agreement.””

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You think Daniel will believe you over me? He barely comes home. He trusts me with everything.””

“He trusts you because he doesn't know what you've done.””

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the window.

“If you tell him, I'll make sure you lose Lily.””

Emma looked directly at her.

“You won't touch my daughter.””

“She's not even his by blood!””

Emma recoiled as though Vanessa had struck her.

Then she reached for her phone.

“I am calling the police.””

Vanessa seized the phone and threw it onto the passenger seat.

The video shook as Emma tried to push her away.

“Get out of my car!””

Vanessa stepped backward.

For several seconds, she stared at Emma through the open window.

Then she smiled.

“Fine. Drive away. Let's see how far you get.””

She walked out of view.

The video continued for another minute.

Emma locked the doors and started the engine. Her breathing was ragged, and she kept looking into the rearview mirror.

Then her phone rang.

She answered on speaker.

A man's voice came through.

“Emma, listen to me. You need to get off the road.””

“Jonathan?””

“Vanessa has people watching you. Don't go home.””

“I have to get Lily.””

“Anna has her. Go to the police.””

Emma looked toward the road.

“I can't. She's right behind me.””

A pair of headlights appeared in the rearview mirror.

Emma whispered, “Oh, God.””

The car accelerated.

The footage shook violently. The headlights drew closer.

Then came a loud impact.

The screen went black.

Daniel sat motionless.

Rachel stared at the laptop.

“That proves Vanessa threatened Emma, but it doesn't show the crash itself.””

Anna was crying silently.

Daniel replayed the final thirty seconds.

This time, he noticed something in the rearview mirror.

The pursuing vehicle had a distinctive crack across its left headlight.

He knew that car.

It had belonged to Vanessa.

Rachel immediately called Sergeant Miller and gave him the new evidence.

Then she turned to Daniel.

“We can issue a warrant for Vanessa's arrest, but we still need to establish what happened after the footage ended.””

Daniel closed the laptop.

“She was following Emma. She threatened her. She knew Emma was afraid.””

“And now we have evidence that she tried to destroy the agreement,” Rachel said.

“But the original recording could be challenged unless we verify its source and establish the chain of custody.””

Daniel nodded.

He was beginning to understand how much work it would take to turn the truth into something the law could act on.

Before he could say anything else, Lily appeared in the doorway, holding a sheet of paper.

“Daddy?””

He immediately softened his voice.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“I found this in Anna's bag.””

Anna turned sharply.

“Lily, you shouldn't have—”

Daniel took the paper.

It was a photograph of Emma standing beside a little girl in a red coat.

The child looked about six years old.

She had Vanessa's dark hair.

On the back, Emma had written:

If Vanessa ever comes for Lily, find Sophie. She knows what happened to Rebecca.

Daniel looked at Anna.

“Who is Sophie?””

Anna's lips parted, but no words came out.

Then she whispered a name that made Rachel reach for her phone.

“Sophie Reed.””

Jonathan's daughter.

The child who had supposedly been living safely with her aunt in Oregon.

And according to the date written on the photograph, Emma had taken the picture only two weeks before she died.
