Chapter 7: The Man at Emma’s Grave

At 11:43 the next morning, Daniel stood in front of Emma’s grave with a photograph in one hand and a loaded phone in the other.

The cemetery was almost empty. A cold wind moved through the bare branches, scattering brown leaves across the wet grass. Beyond the stone wall, traffic hummed along the highway, indifferent to the secrets buried beneath the ground.

Daniel had brought two security officers and informed Rachel Cole of his location. She had insisted he wait for the police before approaching anyone, but Daniel had refused to cancel the meeting.

If Jonathan Reed knew what had happened to Emma, Daniel wanted to hear it from his own mouth.

A black sedan pulled into the cemetery parking lot.

The driver stepped out wearing a dark overcoat. His hair had thinned, and silver streaks ran along his temples, but Daniel recognized him immediately.

Jonathan.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then Jonathan walked toward the grave.

“You look older,” Jonathan said quietly.

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“My wife is dead, my lawyer has been murdered, and someone has threatened my daughter. Forgive me if I haven't been taking care of myself.””

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

“I heard about Michael.””

“Did you kill him?””

Jonathan looked up sharply.

“No.””

“Then tell me why his name is in Emma's notebook. Tell me why your name is on a paternity report. And tell me why someone sent me a photograph of you standing at my wife's grave.””

Jonathan stared at the headstone.

“Because I couldn't stay away.””

Daniel grabbed the front of his coat.

“You've had four years to explain yourself.””

“I know.””

“Then start talking.””

Jonathan didn't resist. He simply looked at Daniel with an expression that made the anger in Daniel's chest burn hotter.

“I loved Emma,” Jonathan said.

Daniel released him.

The words seemed to hang between the graves.

“You were my best friend.””

“I know.””

“You stood beside me at my wedding.””

“I know.””

“You held my daughter when she was born.””

Jonathan's face crumpled.

“I know, Daniel.””

Daniel took a step back.

“Were you having an affair with my wife?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“No. Not when Lily was conceived.””

“Then explain the test.””

Jonathan reached into his coat and removed a folded envelope.

“Emma and I were together briefly before she met you. It happened during a period when I was separated from Rebecca. Emma ended it when she learned I was trying to repair my marriage.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You never told me.””

“Because by the time I understood what had happened, Emma was pregnant, and you were already planning a life together.””

“Did she know Lily might be yours?””

“Yes.””

The answer struck Daniel harder than he expected.

Jonathan continued, his voice low.

“Emma told me before Lily was born. She asked me not to interfere. She wanted to raise Lily with you, and I agreed because I believed you would be a wonderful father.””

“You let me believe she was mine.””

“She is yours in every way that matters.””

“That's not your decision to make!””

Jonathan flinched.

“No. It isn't.””

Daniel turned away, pressing his palms against his eyes. He had spent the previous night imagining a dozen explanations, but none had prepared him for the simple truth that his wife had hidden an entire part of her past.

When he faced Jonathan again, his voice was quieter.

“Why did Emma stay silent?””

“Because she believed telling you would destroy the life you had built together. And because I promised her I would never use the truth to claim Lily.””

“Then why did she write that you were helping Vanessa?””

Jonathan's expression changed.

“Because Vanessa found out about the paternity test.””

He glanced around the cemetery before continuing.

“She approached me about six months before Emma died. She said she wanted to protect Lily's inheritance in case something happened to you. She claimed Emma had become unstable and was planning to leave with Lily.””

“Did you believe her?””

“At first, yes. Vanessa showed me documents that appeared to prove Emma was trying to transfer the family assets without your knowledge.””

“The forged trust amendment.””

Jonathan nodded.

“She wanted me to sign a statement confirming that Emma had concealed Lily's paternity. She said the information would help establish a legal basis for guardianship if you became unable to care for Lily.””

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“And you agreed?””

“I agreed to review the documents. I never signed anything.””

“But you didn't tell me.””

“No. I was ashamed. I thought I could fix it without involving you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone seems to have made that decision for me.””

Jonathan accepted the accusation without protest.

Then he pulled another document from his coat.

“Emma found out about Vanessa's plan. She confronted me and demanded to know whether I had betrayed her. I told her what happened. She was furious, but she also understood that Vanessa had manipulated both of us.””

“What happened next?””

“Emma found evidence connecting Vanessa to Rebecca's death.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Your wife died in an accidental fire.””

“That's what the police concluded.””

“Was it an accident?””

Jonathan looked down at his hands.

“I don't know for certain. Rebecca had discovered that Vanessa was moving money through accounts connected to the trust. She told me she planned to expose it. Eleven days later, our house burned down.””

“Why didn't you investigate?””

“I did. But every witness changed their story, and the insurance records disappeared. Then Vanessa sent me photographs of my daughter, Claire, at school.””

Daniel remembered Michael's fear.

The same threat had been used against everyone who might expose Vanessa.

“Where is Claire now?””

“Living with my sister in Oregon. She doesn't know any of this.””

Jonathan handed him the envelope.

“Inside are copies of the original trust documents and the letter Emma wrote to me. She wanted me to give it to you if she couldn't do it herself.””

Daniel opened the envelope.

The first page was a letter in Emma's handwriting.

Jonathan,

I know now that Vanessa has been using Lily's paternity to gain control of the trust. But there is something else she has hidden from everyone.

Rebecca discovered that the original agreement contained a clause protecting Lily from anyone who attempted to obtain guardianship through fraud or coercion.

Vanessa cannot gain control of the trust while that clause remains in effect. She needs the original document destroyed before the court can examine it.

Daniel looked up.

“Where is the original?””

Jonathan shook his head.

“Emma never told me.””

“Then why did she write this letter?””

“Because she wanted you to understand why she stayed with you. She wasn't protecting the money. She was protecting Lily.””

Daniel continued reading.

The final paragraph was short.

If anything happens to me, don't let Daniel believe he was never enough. He was the only man who ever made Lily feel safe.

Daniel's vision blurred.

He lowered the letter.

For four years, he had wondered whether Emma had died regretting their marriage, whether she had wanted a different life, whether some part of her had always been elsewhere.

Now her words seemed to reach across the years and touch the place in him that had never stopped hurting.

But there was no time to grieve.

His phone rang.

Rachel.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“At the cemetery. Jonathan is here.””

“Get away from him immediately. We have a warrant for his arrest.””

Daniel stiffened.

“For what?””

“Michael Grant's murder. His fingerprints were found on a weapon recovered from the scene.””

Jonathan heard her through the speaker.

His face went white.

“That's impossible,” he whispered.

Rachel continued.

“Daniel, do not let him leave. Officers are on their way.””

Jonathan stepped back.

“Someone planted those prints.””

“Then explain it to the police,” Daniel said.

“I will. But you have to listen to me first.””

“No more secrets.””

Jonathan reached into his pocket and pulled out a second phone.

“Michael called me last night. He said Vanessa had found the original agreement. He believed she was going to destroy it before anyone could use it against her.””

“Where is it?””

“I don't know. But Michael told me one thing that matters.””

Jonathan looked directly at Daniel.

“Vanessa didn't just threaten Emma. She was the last person to see her alive.””

Daniel's heart hammered.

“You said you didn't know whether the fire that killed Rebecca was deliberate. What about Emma's accident?””

Jonathan's voice broke.

“Emma called me from her car that night. She said Vanessa was following her. She told me to find Lily if anything happened.””

Daniel felt the ground shift beneath his feet.

“You heard the crash?””

“No. The call disconnected. When I tried to call back, Vanessa answered.””

“What did she say?””

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“She said Emma was dead. And then she told me that if I ever spoke to you, she would make sure Claire suffered the same fate as Rebecca.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Jonathan looked toward the cemetery entrance.

“I know how this looks, Daniel. But I didn't kill Michael.””

“Then who did?””

Jonathan turned back to him.

“Ask the person who had access to both our homes.””

Before Daniel could respond, a sharp crack split the air.

Jonathan jerked backward.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

He fell against Emma's headstone, gasping.

Daniel dropped beside him.

“Jonathan!””

Another crack echoed through the cemetery.

The security officers shouted and ran toward the trees.

Daniel pressed his hands against Jonathan's wound.

“Stay with me!””

Jonathan grabbed his wrist.

His lips moved, but the first words were lost beneath the sirens.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Tell me!””

Jonathan forced out a final sentence.

“Your housekeeper... she knows where Vanessa hid the original.””

His grip loosened.

May you like

And as the police flooded the cemetery, Daniel looked toward the road and saw a familiar black car speeding away.

Vanessa was behind the wheel.
