Chapter 6: The Doctor's Confession
Daniel stared at Dr. Harris through the narrow opening.
“Who was murdered?””
She glanced over her shoulder toward the dark driveway.
“Michael Grant.””
For several seconds, Daniel couldn't make sense of the words.
Michael had called him that morning. He had sounded frightened, but alive. He had promised to explain what happened to Emma and to bring the documents that could prove Vanessa had forged the trust amendment.
Now he was dead.
“When?”” Daniel asked.
“About twenty minutes ago. The police found him in his office.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I was there.””
Daniel unfastened the chain.
Dr. Harris stepped inside, clutching the envelope against her chest. She looked exhausted, her gray hair damp from the rain and her hands trembling.
Anna appeared at the top of the stairs.
“Is everything all right?””
“No,” Daniel said.
“Please stay with Lily.””
Anna disappeared upstairs.
Dr. Harris watched her go.
“Your daughter must not hear this.””
Daniel shut the door.
“You don't get to decide what my daughter hears. You can start by explaining why you altered her medical records.””
The doctor's eyes filled with tears.
“I never wanted any of this to happen.””
“That's not an explanation.””
“No.”” She swallowed.
“It isn't.””
She followed him into the dining room, where Emma's notebook lay open beneath the lamp.
The moment Dr. Harris saw it, she covered her mouth.
“Where did you find that?””
“My late wife hid it.””
“Then she knew.””
“Knew what?””
The doctor sat down slowly.
“Four years ago, Vanessa came to my clinic with a document and a substantial payment. She said you had agreed to a private arrangement involving the family trust. She asked me to change a medical report before it was sent to your attorney.””
“What report?””
“An ancestry and paternity screening.””
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“Paternity?””
Dr. Harris nodded.
“Emma had requested the screening because she was concerned about a discrepancy in an earlier blood test. Vanessa told me the results had been misunderstood and that changing the report would prevent an unnecessary family dispute.””
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then why did you do it?””
“Because she threatened my son.””
The doctor reached into her bag and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“She knew where he went to school. She knew where we lived. She showed me photographs of him walking home.””
Daniel remembered the anonymous call about Michael's daughter.
The same method.
The same quiet cruelty.
“Did Vanessa threaten Emma, too?””
Dr. Harris nodded.
“Emma came to me three days before the accident. She had discovered that the original screening results had been altered. She wanted me to restore the records and testify about the payment.””
“What did the original results show?””
The doctor looked toward the ceiling, as though she were searching for the courage to speak.
“They showed that Lily's biological father was not you.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
The silence stretched between them.
Finally, he whispered, “Who was?””
Dr. Harris closed her eyes.
“I don't know his identity with certainty. The original test identified a genetic match, but the record was incomplete. Emma had provided a second sample to confirm the results. Before the confirmation could be completed, Vanessa removed the file.””
“Why would Emma hide this from me?””
“Because she was terrified of losing you. She told me she had made a mistake before your marriage and had spent every day since trying to make sure it never affected Lily.””
Daniel rose and walked to the window.
Rain streaked the glass.
His mind filled with memories he had never questioned: Emma crying in the hospital after Lily's birth, Emma refusing to discuss the paternity test, Emma insisting that Lily would always be his daughter regardless of what any document said.
He had assumed those moments reflected the ordinary exhaustion of a new mother.
Now he wondered whether Emma had been carrying a secret that could destroy everything.
“Did Vanessa know who the father was?”” he asked.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“She found Emma's original medical records. She used them to pressure her into signing the trust amendment.””
Daniel turned around.
“What did the amendment do?””
“It transferred control of Lily's inheritance to Vanessa if you were ever declared unfit to care for her.””
Daniel stared at the doctor.
“Unfit?””
“Vanessa intended to argue that your grief after Emma's death made you incapable of raising Lily. She planned to seek guardianship and control the money held in trust.””
“And Michael helped her?””
Dr. Harris looked down.
“He prepared the paperwork. I don't know whether he understood the full plan at first. But when Emma confronted him, he agreed to preserve the original documents.””
Daniel remembered Michael's phone call.
Someone had threatened his daughter to keep him silent.
“Why did Michael call me today?””
“Because he had decided to come forward.””
“And now he's dead.””
Dr. Harris nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
Daniel felt anger rise so quickly that he had to grip the edge of the table.
“Did Vanessa kill him?””
“I don't know.””
“You were with him.””
“I arrived at his office after he called me. He said he had evidence that would expose everyone involved. He told me to wait outside while he retrieved a file.””
Her voice shook.
“When I heard a crash, I went inside. He was on the floor. There was blood on the desk, and someone had left through the back entrance.””
“Did you see the killer?””
“No.””
“Then why come here?””
“Because Michael told me that if anything happened to him, I had to bring you the original medical report.””
She handed Daniel the envelope.
He opened it.
Inside were several photocopied pages, including a laboratory report with a red stamp across the top.
ORIGINAL RESULTS—UNALTERED.
Beneath it was a name.
*Jonathan Reed.*
Daniel recognized it.
Jonathan had been his closest friend in college. They had worked together during their first years in finance before Jonathan moved overseas. He had attended Daniel and Emma's wedding, delivered a speech at their reception, and stood beside Daniel when Lily was born.
But their friendship had ended abruptly five years earlier after a bitter disagreement over a business acquisition.
Daniel hadn't seen him since.
“Jonathan,” he whispered.
Dr. Harris nodded.
“Emma told me he was Lily's biological father.””
Daniel gripped the report.
“Was Vanessa involved with him?””
“I don't know. But Emma believed Jonathan had been helping Vanessa gain access to the trust.””
Daniel sank into a chair.
The truth was worse than he had imagined. Vanessa had known about the paternity secret. Michael had helped prepare the legal documents.
Dr. Harris had altered the medical records. And Jonathan—the man Daniel once considered a brother—might have been involved in a scheme to take his daughter away.
Yet one question remained.
Why had Emma kept Lily's paternity secret even after she discovered the forged documents?
Daniel returned to the notebook and searched for Jonathan's name.
He found it near the end.
September 29.
Jonathan says he never intended to hurt Daniel. He says Vanessa approached him first, promising that the trust would protect Lily if anything happened to me.
I don't believe him.
He claims he has evidence that could clear everything up, but he refuses to meet Daniel in person.
If Jonathan truly wants to protect Lily, he must tell the truth before it's too late.
Daniel read the entry twice.
Then he turned the page.
The final entry was dated October 13, the night before Emma's death.
I finally understand why Vanessa needs the original agreement.
It isn't only about money.
She knows what happened to Jonathan's first wife.
Daniel froze.
Jonathan's first wife, Rebecca, had died in a house fire six years earlier. The official report had ruled it an electrical accident. Jonathan had moved overseas soon afterward, refusing interviews and declining to discuss the tragedy.
Daniel had never connected Rebecca's death to Vanessa.
He looked up at Dr. Harris.
“What does this mean?””
She shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“Did Emma ever tell you what happened to Rebecca?””
“No. But she was terrified after she found the connection.””
“What connection?””
Dr. Harris hesitated.
Then she pulled another page from her bag.
It was a copy of an insurance claim filed after Rebecca's death. The beneficiary was Jonathan Reed.
But a handwritten note appeared in the margin.
Policy amended 11 days before fire. Witness: Vanessa Cole.
Daniel stared at the name.
Vanessa had used her maiden name when she first met Emma.
He felt sick.
“Did the police investigate this?””
“The fire was ruled accidental. No one reopened the case.””
“Why didn't Emma tell me?””
“Perhaps she was trying to find proof before she put you in danger.””
Daniel looked at the clock.
It was almost midnight.
His daughter was upstairs, sleeping in a strange house while a woman he had married threatened her, a trusted attorney lay dead, and a secret about her birth threatened to unravel their family.
He had spent years believing that providing money and security was enough to protect Lily.
He knew better now.
“I'm taking this to Rachel Cole,” he said.
“She'll get it to the police.””
Dr. Harris nodded.
“There's one more thing.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
“Michael left a message for me before he died. He said the original agreement wasn't the only document Vanessa needed. He said she was looking for a letter Emma wrote to Jonathan.””
“Where is it?””
“He didn't know. But he believed it explained why Emma agreed to keep Lily's paternity secret.””
Daniel's phone vibrated on the table.
An incoming message appeared from an unknown number.
You have the report. Good. Now you know Lily isn't yours by blood.
A second message followed.
But if you want to know why Emma stayed with you, come to the cemetery tomorrow at noon.
Then a photograph appeared.
It showed Emma's grave.
A fresh bouquet of white lilies lay across the headstone.
Beneath the bouquet was a small envelope bearing Daniel's name.
He stared at the screen, his hands trembling.
Dr. Harris leaned forward.
“What is it?””
Daniel turned the phone toward her.
She gasped.
“Oh, God.””
“What?””
She pointed at the photograph.
At the edge of the grave stood a man in a dark coat, his face partially hidden by the trees.
Daniel zoomed in.
Even through the grainy image, he recognized the shape of the man's jaw and the distinctive scar across his left hand.
Jonathan Reed.
The man who might have fathered his daughter.
The man connected to Rebecca's death.
The man who had vanished from Daniel's life five years earlier.
Daniel's phone vibrated again.

This time, the message contained only six words.
Ask Vanessa who really killed Emma.
