Chapter 6

The divorce filing became public the following month.

Daniel fought it at first.

He wanted a private settlement.

He wanted confidentiality.

He wanted me to protect his reputation while he complained that I had destroyed it.

Eleanor made one thing clear.

“We will not use the company investigation as leverage,” she told me. “But we will not hide financial facts either.”

There were many.

Daniel had spent money from our joint accounts without my knowledge.

He had used my family trust distributions to support the lifestyle he pretended he could afford alone.

He had also opened a line of credit using our penthouse as collateral.

I had signed nothing.

Yet my name appeared on documents.

Forged.

The moment I saw my false signature, my sadness became something sharper.

Daniel had not only betrayed me emotionally.

He had been preparing to use me financially.

His lawyer claimed it was an administrative error.

The handwriting analysis proved otherwise.

The investigation expanded.

Daniel was charged with fraud and misuse of company funds.

Vanessa’s brother cooperated.

Vanessa gave a statement too.

She admitted Daniel had promised her a leadership position after his promotion.

“He said Claire would never fight him,” she told investigators.

That sentence followed me for days.

Not because it was true.

Because I had helped Daniel believe it.

I had stayed quiet when he mocked my accent.

I had hidden my discomfort when he spent my money carelessly.

I had made excuses when he stopped coming home at night.

But I refused to punish myself forever for trusting someone I loved.

Trust was not weakness.

His betrayal was.
