Chapter 5

The board removed Daniel permanently one week later.

His promotion was revoked.

His office was sealed.

His company laptop, phone, and financial records were seized for review.

The news traveled quickly through the city.

The same executives who once praised Daniel’s ambition now acted as if they had never known him.

That was the world Daniel had wanted so badly.

A world built on status.

A world where people stayed close only while you were winning.

He called me from an unknown number.

This time, I answered because I was tired of running from his voice.

“You ruined me,” he said.

“No, Daniel. Your actions did that.”

“You could have handled it privately.”

“You threw champagne in my face in front of two hundred people.”

“You made me feel small.”

I almost could not believe what I heard.

“You made yourself small by needing to hurt me.”

His breathing changed.

Then his voice softened.

“Claire, I was under pressure. I thought Vanessa understood me.”

“She understood the version of you that gave her gifts and lied about your wife.”

“You don’t know what it is like to work as hard as I do.”

I looked around my grandfather’s old study.

My grandfather had worked until his hands hurt.

He had built a company without humiliating people to prove he belonged.

“You worked hard,” I said. “But you believed that gave you permission to treat other people like they were beneath you.”

Daniel was quiet.

Then he said the one thing I had waited years to hear.

“I’m sorry.”

But it came too late.

And it sounded too much like fear.

“I hope you become someone who means that,” I said.

Then I blocked his number.
