Chapter 9: The Memory Lily Hid From Everyone

The file opened.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Nobody wanted to see what was inside.

Because somehow, after everything we had uncovered beneath the Meridian, the one secret left belonged to my daughter.

Not James Vance.

Not the copies.

Not the hidden facility.

Lily.

The screen glowed in the dark hallway.

*LILY PARKER — ORIGINAL MEMORY RECORD*

The word “original” felt heavier than anything else.

Marcus stared at the file.

“David…”

I knew what he was thinking.

We had spent hours uncovering the truth about fake identities and stolen memories.

Now there was a possibility that the person we had been protecting had memories even she couldn’t explain.

Emma stepped closer.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“We don’t open that.””

I looked at my wife.

“Why?””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

“Because she was just a child.””

Lily stood quietly beside me.

Then she spoke.

“I want to.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was soft.

But steady.

“Daddy needs to know.””

I knelt beside her.

“Are you sure?””

She nodded.

“I’ve been waiting.””

The answer hurt.

A seven-year-old should never say something like that.

She shouldn’t talk like someone who had been carrying a secret for years.

Marcus slowly opened the file.

The video began.

At first, there was only static.

Then an image appeared.

A small room.

A camera angle from above.

A younger Lily sat on the floor.

Five years old.

Holding her mother’s scarf.

Emma immediately covered her mouth.

“Oh my God…”

The little girl on the screen looked exactly like my daughter.

But there was something different.

The same sadness.

The same silence.

The same eyes that noticed everything.

A voice came from behind the camera.

“Subject Lily Parker.””

James Vance.

My hands tightened.

“Don’t.””

Lily grabbed my fingers.

“Keep watching.””

The younger Lily looked toward the camera.

“Where is my daddy?””

James appeared.

Younger.

Confident.

Cruel.

“He’s resting.””

Little Lily frowned.

“No.””

James stopped.

“What?””

“He’s not resting.””

The room became quiet.

Even James looked surprised.

“How do you know?””

Little Lily pointed toward the camera.

“Because you’re scared.””

My breath caught.

James leaned closer.

“Why would I be scared?””

“Because he knows.””

James’s expression changed.

“Knows what?””

Little Lily looked down.

Then whispered:

“That you made another daddy.””

Nobody moved.

The recording continued.

James walked away from the camera.

A second later, another person entered.

Me.

The original me.

But something was wrong.

He looked exhausted.

Terrified.

He knelt beside Lily.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Little Lily immediately ran to him.

“Daddy!””

I closed my eyes.

Seeing it hurt.

Because it was me.

But it was also a version of me I had never known.

The original David held Lily tightly.

“I need you to listen.””

She nodded.

“Are we going home?””

He looked toward the camera.

“No.””

A pause.

“Not yet.””

Little Lily started crying.

“I want Mommy.””

“I know.””

“Where is she?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“She’s trying to get us out.””

Emma broke down beside me.

The video continued.

The original me took out a small device.

A recording chip.

“Lily, I need you to remember something.””

She nodded.

“People can copy faces.””

He touched her forehead gently.

“They can copy voices.””

He pointed to her heart.

“But they can’t copy what someone loves.””

I felt tears forming.

Because I remembered saying those words.

Not with my mind.

With something deeper.

The video skipped.

The next scene was different.

The room was darker.

Little Lily sat alone.

A door opened.

The copy entered.

The first time he met her.

The copy looked confused.

Lost.

Like someone waking up inside a life that wasn’t theirs.

Little Lily stared at him.

“You’re not him.””

The copy froze.

“What?””

“You look like him.””

She walked closer.

“But you’re not.””

The copy knelt.

“I don’t understand.””

Little Lily touched his face.

“You don’t remember the rain.””

The copy frowned.

“The rain?””

“Daddy hates thunder.””

The copy stared.

Little Lily smiled sadly.

“You don’t know that.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then a new file appeared.

*FINAL MEMORY*

Marcus hesitated.

“Do we continue?””

Lily answered first.

“Yes.””

The final video opened.

The room was different.

A hallway.

The night everything happened.

The night Emma disappeared.

The original David stood beside James.

They were arguing.

James looked furious.

“You don’t understand what you’ve created.””

The original me replied:

“No. You don’t.””

“You think she’s special.””

“She is.””

“She’s dangerous.””

The original me looked toward the hidden rooms.

“She’s a child.””

James stepped closer.

“She can remember things we erase.””

Silence.

Then my original self said something that made everyone freeze.

“Because she isn’t remembering.””

James frowned.

“What?””

“She’s seeing.””

The screen flickered.

James looked confused.

“She sees patterns before they happen.””

The original David continued.

“She knows when someone is lying.””

I looked at Lily.

Her face was calm.

Like she had known this all along.

James on the recording looked terrified.

“She can’t exist.””

The original me stepped forward.

“She already does.””

Then the video showed something else.

A door opening.

Emma entering.

Holding documents.

James turned.

“You brought her here?””

Emma looked angry.

“I found everything.””

The original David took the files.

“You’re sure?””

Emma nodded.

“The entire project.””

James smiled.

A cold smile.

“Then you both made the same mistake.””

The screen shook.

“What mistake?”” Emma asked.

James looked at Lily.

“You trusted the child.””

The video ended.

Everyone was silent.

Then the last line appeared on the screen.

*MEMORY STORED BY SUBJECT LILY PARKER.*

Marcus stared.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at my daughter.

She answered quietly.

“I saved it.””

My heart stopped.

“You saved it?””

She nodded.

“Before they changed you.””

Emma stepped closer.

“Lily…”

“I knew Daddy would forget.””

She looked at me.

“So I kept a copy.””

Nobody spoke.

My daughter.

My seven-year-old daughter.

Had protected the truth.

While everyone else was trying to erase it.

I held her.

And for the first time since this nightmare began, she hugged me back.

Not a small touch.

Not a hesitant movement.

A real hug.

A child holding her father.

Then the facility alarm suddenly sounded.

Marcus looked at the monitors.

His face changed.

“What?””

I turned.

“What is it?””

He pointed at the screen.

The uploaded files.

The evidence.

The truth we had sent above ground.

Every file was being accessed.

Not by police.

Not by the public.

By one person.

A single account.

The name appeared.

My blood froze.

Because the account belonged to someone who should not exist.

*USER: DAVID PARKER.*

Emma stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus stared at me.

“But you’re here.””

I looked at the screen.

A message appeared.

One sentence.

*IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU HAVE FOUND THE WRONG TRUTH.*

Then another line appeared.

*THE ORIGINAL DAVID PARKER NEVER LEFT THE MERIDIAN.*

The hallway went silent.

My fingers went cold.

Lily looked at me.

And for the first time since we entered the hidden facility…

she looked uncertain.

Because the final secret wasn’t about James.

It wasn’t about the copy.

It wasn’t about the past.

It was about me.

May you like

And somewhere inside the Meridian…

the real answer was still waiting.
