Chapter 9: The Last File
The drive to my sister’s apartment felt unreal.
Every streetlight outside the car window looked exactly the same as it had an hour earlier.
Madrid was still alive.
People were still walking.
Restaurants were still full.
Cars were still moving through intersections.
The world had not changed.
But mine had.
I sat in the back seat with a police officer beside me, holding a folder filled with copies of documents proving that my husband had built an entire second life behind my back.
A second company.
A second woman.
A child.
Hundreds of thousands of euros missing.
And somehow, the most painful part wasn't the money.
It was remembering all the moments when I had almost discovered the truth.
The nights Javier came home late.
The calls he stepped outside to answer.
The sudden passwords.
The strange expenses.
The way he started calling my questions “attacks.””
I had spent months wondering if I was becoming a difficult wife.
I wasn't.
I was becoming aware.
My sister Sofia opened the door before I even knocked.
The officer had called ahead.
The moment she saw my face, she pulled me inside.
“Oh my God.””
I hugged her.
And for the first time that night, I allowed myself to cry.
Not the quiet tears I had hidden in bathrooms.
Not the controlled tears I had wiped away before Javier noticed.
Real tears.
The kind that hurt.
Sofia held me tightly.
“What happened?””
I looked at the officer.
Then at the folder in my hands.
“Everything.””
She sat me down.
The officer explained only the necessary details.
Possible fraud.
Identity theft.
Financial investigation.
Safety concerns.
He did not tell the story emotionally.
He didn't need to.
The documents did enough damage.
After he left, Sofia sat beside me.
“Clara.””
I stared at the floor.
“I don't know who I married.””
She took my hand.
“You married someone who lied.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“That would be easier.””
“What do you mean?””
“I married someone who knew exactly how to make me trust him.””
Sofia was quiet.
Because she understood.
That was the part nobody could see from the outside.
Javier hadn't been cruel all the time.
That would have been easier.
He brought me coffee every morning.
He remembered tiny things I liked.
He held my hand when my father died.
He knew how to make me feel chosen.
And then he used that trust like a key.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
I froze.
Unknown number.
Sofia looked at me.
“Don't open it.””
But I did.
One sentence.
You need to hear the truth before Elena gives it to the police.
I stared at the screen.
Sofia leaned closer.
“Who is it?””
I showed her.
“Javier.””
“Block him.””
I almost did.
Then another message arrived.
Please. Five minutes. Then you can hate me forever.
I closed my eyes.
Five minutes.
That was what I had given him for three years.
Five minutes to explain.
Five minutes to apologize.
Five minutes to promise things would change.
But something about the message bothered me.
Not the words.
The timing.
“How did he get my number?””
Sofia looked at me.
“He's your husband.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My new number.””
The number I had created six months ago.
The one I never gave him.
The one I used only for my personal accounts.
My stomach tightened.
I checked my phone settings.
Then my banking alerts.
Then my email.
A new notification appeared.
*Security alert: New device attempted access.*
I felt cold.
Someone was still trying to get into my accounts.
Sofia saw my face.
“What?””
“He's still trying.””
I called the officer.
He answered quickly.
I explained.
He told me not to respond.
Then he asked me to check the notification details.
The attempt came from a device.
The location appeared.
My apartment.
I stared.
“He's there.””
The officer went silent.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
Sofia grabbed my hand.
“Clara, no.””
I looked at the screen.
The place where I had lived.
The place where I had cooked meals.
The place where I had slept beside Javier.
Someone was inside.
The officer told me not to go.
I agreed.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Elena's warning.
They're already there.
Not tomorrow.
Tonight.
Another call came through.
Elena.
I answered.
“Where are you?””
Her breathing was fast.
“I'm at the office.””
“What office?””
“The company office.””
“Why?””
“I found the file.””
My heart started pounding.
“What file?””
“The one Javier was trying to destroy.””
I stood.
“What is it?””
There was a pause.
Then Elena said,
“Clara, you need to know something.””
“What?””
“Your marriage wasn't the beginning.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Javier didn't choose you randomly.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you saying?””
“He knew about you before you met him.””
I couldn't speak.
Sofia looked at me.
“Elena, explain.””
“She found the records,” I heard someone say in the background.
A man's voice.
My blood froze.
“Who is with you?””
Elena didn't answer.
“Clara, listen carefully.””
“Elena.””
“The file shows Javier researched you.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“Your finances.””
The room became silent.
“He knew about my money?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He had access to public property records. Employment records. Investment history.””
I felt sick.
“He investigated me.””
“Yes.””
“Before we dated?””
“Yes.””
The officer's warning echoed in my head.
Be careful.
Don't assume.
Document everything.
I sat down.
“How long before?””
Elena hesitated.
“Six months.””
Six months.
Before our first date.
Before he told me I was beautiful.
Before he said he had never felt this way.
Before he held my hand.
He had already been studying me.
Sofia whispered,
“Oh my God.””
I looked at the phone.
“Why are you telling me this now?””
“Because I found the original plan.””
My voice became quiet.
“What plan?””
“The reason he needed you.””
I waited.
Elena continued.
“Javier wasn't just looking for someone to marry.””
“What was he looking for?””
“A financial identity.””
My chest tightened.
“He needed someone clean.””
“Yes.””
“Someone with assets.””
“Yes.””
“Someone people trusted.””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
All the things he had called love suddenly felt different.
Not all of them.
I refused to believe every moment was fake.
But enough.
Enough to destroy the illusion.
“What does the file say?””
Elena lowered her voice.
“It says the marriage was supposed to last three years.””
I felt dizzy.
“Three years?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because after three years, certain assets could be transferred more easily.””
The room went quiet.
My anniversary.
Next month.
Three years.
I remembered Javier mentioning how important our third anniversary would be.
A special dinner.
A surprise.
I thought it was romance.
It was a deadline.
“What happens after three years?””
Elena didn't answer immediately.
Then:
“Divorce.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“The plan was to file for divorce after securing the assets.””
My hands shook.
“And what about me?””
A pause.
Then Elena said the words I will never forget.
“Clara, according to the documents, you were never supposed to keep the apartment.””
I felt tears burn my eyes.
“Where was I supposed to go?””
No answer.
I already knew.
I had been the temporary foundation.
The thing holding up his collapsing world.
The thing he planned to remove when everything was stable.
Then Elena spoke again.
“There’s more.””
I wiped my face.
“What?””
“The file contains a second name.””
“Whose?””
She hesitated.
“Mercedes.””
Of course.
“What about her?””
“She wasn't just helping Javier.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
“She introduced you.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
“She knew your financial background before you met him.””
I felt the room spin.
“My mother-in-law?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
“Clara—”
“No.””
I stood.
“No.””
Because suddenly I remembered.
The first time I met Mercedes.
The way she had looked at me.
Not warmly.
Not curiously.
Like she was evaluating something.
My job.
My apartment.
My family.
My stability.
Sofia looked at me.
“What is it?””
I whispered,
“She chose me.””
Elena said,
“Yes.””
A sound came from the phone.
Like a door opening.
Then Elena gasped.
“Wait.””
“Elena?””
“Someone's here.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
No answer.
“Elena?””
I heard footsteps.
Then a man's voice.
“Give me the file.””
Javier.
My blood went cold.
“Elena!””
The call cut.
I stared at the screen.
Sofia grabbed my shoulders.
“Clara.””
I couldn't move.
The last file.
The truth about why Javier chose me.
The proof of everything.
It was with Elena.
And Javier had found her.
My phone rang again.
This time, it wasn't Elena.
It was Javier.
I answered.
I don't know why.
Maybe because after everything, some part of me still needed to hear him admit it.
His voice came through.
Broken.
“Clara.””
I said nothing.
“Please listen.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where is Elena?””
Silence.
Then:
“She knows too much.””
My heart stopped.
“What did you do?””
Another pause.
Then Javier whispered,
“I didn't want it to happen this way.””
The line went quiet.
And before he hung up, I heard him say:
“I'm sorry.””
Then a message appeared on my phone.
A photo.
My apartment building.
Taken minutes ago.
And underneath it:
May you like
*The appointment is still tomorrow.*
*But now you won't be there to stop it.*
