Chapter 8: The Child in My Home

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything.

Not the officers.

Not Elena.

Not Javier.

Not Mercedes.

Only the sentence in my own head.

Guardian: Clara Morales.

I looked at the birth certificate again.

The paper didn't change.

The name didn't disappear.

The date didn't become a mistake.

I looked up at Elena.

“You said the baby is six months old.””

“Yes.””

“And the address is my apartment.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Elena swallowed.

“Because Javier put it there.””

I turned to him.

“You brought a baby into my home?””

He wiped his face.

“Clara, please listen.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

The word landed softly.

Almost worse than a confession shouted across the room.

“Without telling me?””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

“I thought—”

“When?””

He couldn't answer.

I stepped back.

“What does ‘guardian’ mean?””

Elena looked at me.

“It means your name was placed on the paperwork as the child's legal emergency guardian.””

“I never agreed to that.””

“I know.””

“Then how was it possible?””

Javier answered.

“Because I had power of attorney.””

My chest tightened.

“You had power of attorney?””

“For certain financial and legal matters.””

“You never told me.””

“You signed it.””

“No.””

He swallowed.

“You did.””

I stared at him.

The officer interrupted.

“We'll need to establish whether that document was legitimately executed.””

Elena gave a humorless smile.

“It wasn't.””

Javier looked at her.

“Stop.””

“You copied her signature.””

“I didn't.””

“I watched you.””

The officer turned toward her.

“You witnessed it?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“At the office.””

“Which office?””

“The company's.””

I looked at Javier.

“You forged my signature again.””

He shook his head.

“I didn't know how else to protect the baby.””

My body went completely still.

“What baby?””

“Our son.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Elena looked down.

“My son,” she corrected.

Javier's face tightened.

“Our son.””

I stared at both of them.

“You have a child.””

“Yes,” Elena said.

“And you hid him.””

Javier's voice cracked.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you'd leave.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“You were afraid I'd leave, so you secretly had a child, put him in my home, stole my money, and tried to transfer my apartment?””

“No.””

“Then explain it.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Elena answered for him.

“Javier believed he could keep everything together if you never knew.””

I looked at her.

“Everything?””

“The company. The debts. The child. You.””

I shook my head.

“You're talking like I'm another asset.””

“That was how he treated you.””

Javier looked wounded.

“That isn't true.””

Elena's eyes flashed.

“You listed her as collateral.””

He went silent.

I felt something inside me collapse.

“Collateral?””

Elena opened another folder.

She handed a document to the officer.

“Read the third page.””

He did.

Then he stopped.

“Mrs. Morales.””

I knew from his face that I wasn't going to like what came next.

He turned the page toward me.

There it was.

My apartment.

My personal savings.

And next to them:

*Security pledged by Clara Morales.*

I stared at the line.

“I never pledged anything.””

“I know,” he said.

Javier whispered,

“I was going to fix it.””

I looked at him.

“You keep saying that.””

“I thought the new financing would close.””

“What financing?””

“A private lender.””

“Using my apartment.””

“Yes.””

“My savings.””

“Yes.””

“My identity.””

He didn't answer.

“That was your plan.””

“It was temporary.””

“You planned to transfer everything before noon tomorrow.””

“I thought I could repay it.””

“With what?””

Silence.

I turned toward Elena.

“What happened to the baby?””

Her expression changed.

“He's safe.””

“Where?””

“Tonight? With my sister.””

I felt a strange wave of relief.

At least he wasn't in that apartment.

My apartment.

A place I had suddenly begun to feel I had never truly known.

The officer asked Elena, “Why was the child's address listed there?””

She answered carefully.

“Javier wanted an address the courts wouldn't question.””

“Why would they question yours?””

“Because I wasn't married.””

I stared at Javier.

“So you used my marriage to hide your child?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't want people to know.””

“People?””

“Creditors. Investors. My family.””

“Your family already knew.””

Mercedes looked away.

I turned toward her.

“You knew about the baby?””

She nodded.

“How long?””

“Since before he was born.””

I felt sick.

“You knew I was married to a man who had another woman pregnant.””

Mercedes whispered,

“It was complicated.””

“No. It wasn't.””

She looked at me.

“He made a mistake.””

I shook my head.

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary. This was a second life.””

Javier moved toward me.

“I never stopped loving you.””

I raised my hand.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

“You don't get to use love as an explanation.””

His eyes filled again.

“I was trying to protect everyone.””

“You protected yourself.””

“That isn't fair.””

“Neither was any of this.””

The first officer looked at Elena.

“Why did you come here tonight?””

She hesitated.

“Because I knew they were going to do something permanent.””

“What?””

“Transfer the apartment.””

“And?””

“Transfer the child's guardianship.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Elena looked at me.

“The paperwork doesn't only transfer the property.””

She opened another folder.

A typed agreement.

My name.

Javier's name.

Elena's name.

And the baby's.

“This was supposed to make you responsible for the child.””

I stared at the document.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why would I agree to raise a baby I didn't know existed?””

“Because Javier intended to tell you the baby belonged to a relative.””

My stomach turned.

“A relative?””

“He planned to say the mother abandoned him.””

I looked at Javier.

“Is that true?””

“No.””

“Did you plan to tell me that?””

He covered his face.

“I didn't know what else to say.””

I stepped back.

“You were going to make me believe I had to care for your child.””

“I thought you'd love him.””

My eyes burned.

“That's not the point.””

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

I pointed at the document.

“You were taking away my ability to choose.””

Javier's shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Maybe because there was nothing left for him to protect.

The officer collected the paperwork.

“We'll be preserving all of this.””

Elena nodded.

“There is one more thing.””

Javier immediately looked at her.

“No.””

She ignored him.

She reached into her bag and removed a small flash drive.

“This contains the original financial records.””

The officer accepted it.

“What records?””

“Everything from the company server.””

Javier's face went white.

“That's stolen property.””

“I copied it before you fired me.””

“You had no right.””

“I had every right to protect myself.””

The officer looked at the drive.

“Is there evidence of transactions?””

“Yes.””

“Forged signatures?””

“Yes.””

“Communications with creditors?””

“Yes.””

“Anything involving Mrs. Morales?””

Elena nodded.

“A lot.””

I stared at the drive.

“What else is in there?””

Elena hesitated.

“Something I didn't understand at first.””

“What?””

“Payments.””

“To whom?””

“Several people.””

“Javier's debt?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at Mercedes.

“Protection.””

Mercedes's face drained of color.

The officer noticed.

“Protection from whom?””

Elena took a breath.

“I don't know exactly.””

“Explain.””

“Javier had been paying someone to make problems disappear.””

“What kind of problems?””

“Collectors. Investigators. Former employees.””

I looked at Javier.

“You paid people to keep quiet?””

“No.””

Elena shook her head.

“Yes.””

Javier snapped,

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I have the invoices.””

The officer looked at the flash drive.

“Were any payments illegal?””

“I don't know.””

“Then we'll determine that.””

Javier suddenly turned toward me.

“Clara, I need you to understand something.””

I didn't answer.

“There was never a plan to hurt you.””

I looked at him.

“You say that while admitting you took my money.””

“I was going to return it.””

“You say that while admitting you forged my signature.””

“I was going to undo it.””

“You say that while admitting you hid a child.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“You say that while trying to take my apartment.””

“I was desperate.””

I shook my head.

“You had choices.””

He cried silently.

“So did you,” I said.

He looked at me.

“You could have told me the truth.””

“I was afraid you'd leave.””

“You should have been afraid of what would happen when I found out.””

The officer's radio crackled.

He listened.

Then looked at his colleague.

“It's the bank.””

My heart tightened.

The officer turned toward me.

“They've located the destination account.””

“Where?””

He paused.

“Outside Spain.””

Javier closed his eyes.

“Where?””

“Switzerland.””

Mercedes whispered,

“Oh God.””

I looked at Javier.

“Whose account?””

The officer's expression hardened.

“An account belonging to a company called Rivas Holdings.””

I stared.

“That was the company from the document.””

“Yes.””

“Who owns it?””

He looked at the paperwork.

“According to the registry…”

He stopped.

“What?””

He handed me the document.

My name was listed there.

*Owner: Clara Morales.*

I stared in disbelief.

“No.””

The officer continued quietly.

“And there is one more problem.””

“What?””

“The company was incorporated eighteen months ago.””

I looked at the date.

It was six months after my marriage.

And three months after I had first noticed money disappearing.

I felt suddenly, horribly certain that every secret had been moving toward the same place.

My name.

My signature.

My home.

My money.

My future.

Javier had been building something around me.

But Elena was already reaching for her coat.

“Where are you going?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“To get the last file.””

“What file?””

“The one that explains why Javier needed you to sign everything tomorrow.””

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“And Clara?””

“Yes?””

Elena's face was pale.

“Do not go back to your apartment.””

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“Because the people Javier owes aren't waiting for tomorrow morning.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“They're already there.””
