Chapter 9: The Final Betrayal
The weapon was pointed directly at me.
For a second, the entire world stopped.
The chapel.
The broken windows.
The cold wind moving through the empty walls.
Everything disappeared.
All I could see was the man standing in front of me with a weapon in his hand and the expression of someone who believed he had already won.
Arthur moved first.
“Get away from her.””
The man smiled.
A slow, emotionless smile.
“Still protecting her, Arthur?””
Arthur stepped forward.
“I said get away from her.””
The man tilted his head.
“You really are your father’s son.””
Richard’s face changed.
“Marcus.””
The name echoed through the chapel.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You.””
I looked between them.
Marcus.
A name none of us had heard before.
But Daniel knew him.
And the hatred in his eyes told me everything.
“You were there.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Of course I was.””
The weapon remained steady.
“You always were too curious.””
Daniel took a step forward.
“You ruined everything.””
Marcus laughed.
“No.””
He looked around the chapel.
“I saved everything.””
Arthur’s voice was cold.
“You destroyed families.””
Marcus shrugged.
“Families destroy themselves.””
Victoria stood frozen near the doorway.
I looked at her.
“Why are you here?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“Rose…”
“No.””
My voice broke.
“After everything, I deserve the truth.””
Victoria looked down.
“I came because I knew Marcus was going to find Daniel.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You helped him.””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“I helped you.””
Everyone went silent.
Victoria looked at me.
“I know what you think of me.””
I almost laughed.
“What should I think?””
She swallowed.
“I lied.””
“Yes.””
“I stole.””
“Yes.””
“I hurt you.””
Her voice cracked.
“Yes.””
She closed her eyes.
“But I never wanted Daniel dead.””
Daniel studied her.
“Then why did you work for Marcus?””
Victoria looked toward him.
“Because I thought he was the only person who could give me what I wanted.””
“The Blackthorn name?””
She flinched.
“No.””
Her answer surprised everyone.
“Revenge.””
The chapel became silent.
Victoria looked at Arthur.
“At first, I wanted this family to suffer.””
Arthur said nothing.
“I wanted them to feel what it was like to be powerless.””
She looked at me.
“But then I found out the truth.””
“What truth?”” I asked.
“That Marcus was never trying to expose Blackthorn.””
Daniel nodded.
“He was trying to control it.””
Marcus laughed.
“Careful, Victoria.””
For the first time, fear appeared in her eyes.
“You promised me.””
Marcus looked amused.
“I promised you a place in history.””
“You promised me the truth.””
“And I gave it to you.””
“No.””
Victoria shook her head.
“You gave me lies.””
Marcus smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I stared at her.
For the first time, I saw Victoria differently.
Not as innocent.
Not as forgiven.
But as someone who had finally realized she had been used.
Marcus stepped closer.
“Do you know what the funny thing is?””
Nobody answered.
He continued.
“Everyone thinks power comes from money.””
He looked at the Blackthorn family.
“It doesn’t.””
He pointed around the chapel.
“Power comes from secrets.””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“You killed people for secrets.””
Marcus smiled.
“I removed obstacles.””
My stomach turned.
Arthur clenched his fists.
“You admit it?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Your grandfather understood.””
Arthur’s expression changed.
“My grandfather?””
“Yes.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I knew it.””
Everyone turned toward him.
Richard looked exhausted.
“I knew Edmund had someone helping him.””
Arthur stared.
“And you never told me?””
Richard looked at his son.
“I thought I could fix it.””
“You thought?””
Arthur’s voice cracked.
“You watched my family fall apart because you thought you could fix it?””
Richard lowered his head.
“You’re right.””
The honesty surprised Arthur.
“I was weak.””
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You were afraid.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed.
“Listen to this.””
He shook his head.
“The great Richard Blackthorn finally admitting fear.””
Richard looked at him.
“You were never loyal to my father.””
“No.””
Marcus smiled.
“I was loyal to myself.””
The words confirmed everything.
He wasn’t protecting Blackthorn.
He wasn’t protecting anyone.
He was protecting his own power.
I looked at Daniel.
“How did you survive?””
Daniel glanced at Marcus.
“Because Richard helped me escape.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You should have finished the job.””
Richard looked at him.
“I should have stopped you years ago.””
“Yes.””
Marcus raised the weapon slightly.
“And now you have one last chance.””
Arthur stepped forward.
“No.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You really think you can stop this?””
Arthur didn’t answer.
He moved.
Fast.
The moment Marcus looked away, Arthur grabbed the nearest wooden chair and threw it toward the side.
The sound distracted everyone.
Daniel rushed forward.
Richard moved toward Victoria.
And I fell backward.
The weapon fired.
The sound exploded through the chapel.
I screamed.
But I wasn’t hit.
The bullet struck the wooden beam above me.
Dust and broken pieces fell around us.
Marcus cursed.
Arthur reached him.
The two men crashed into the floor.
The weapon slid away.
Daniel grabbed it first.
But Marcus was faster.
He pulled a knife from his coat.
Everything happened at once.
Arthur struggled to hold him back.
Richard shouted.
Victoria screamed.
And Daniel—
Daniel stepped between them.
The knife stopped inches from his chest.
“Daniel!””
My scream filled the chapel.
Marcus froze.
For a second, nobody moved.
Then Daniel looked at him.
“You lost.””
Marcus stared.
“No.””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“You did.””
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What did you do?””
Daniel looked toward the door.
“I sent everything.””
Marcus went still.
“What?””
“All the evidence.””
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“The documents. The recordings. The accounts.””
Richard looked at him.
“You had copies?””
Daniel nodded.
“I learned a long time ago not to trust one piece of evidence.””
Marcus stared.
“You planned this.””
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I survived this.””
The chapel doors opened.
Several officers entered.
Marcus finally stopped fighting.
But before they took him away, he looked at me.
“You think this ends here?””
Nobody answered.
He smiled.
“Secrets don’t disappear.””
Then he was gone.
The days after Marcus’s arrest felt unreal.
Like waking from a nightmare but still hearing the echoes.
The truth spread quickly.
The hidden accounts.
The stolen inheritance.
The decades of manipulation.
Everything came into the light.
Blackthorn Manor changed.
It was still the same house.
The same stone walls.
The same endless halls.
But the silence felt different.
Less like a prison.
More like a place finally breathing again.
Richard spent his days cooperating with investigators.
He didn’t ask for forgiveness.
He said he didn’t deserve it.
Arthur visited him often.
Not because everything was fixed.
It wasn’t.
But because broken relationships sometimes needed someone willing to stay.
Victoria was different.
She didn’t leave immediately.
She expected hatred.
Maybe she deserved some of it.
But she also helped reveal everything she knew about Marcus.
One evening, she found me in the garden.
The same garden where she had once told me she finally felt like she belonged.
“I don’t expect you to forgive me,” she said.
I looked at her.
“Good.””
She nodded.
“I hurt you.””
“Yes.””
“I wanted what you had.””
I looked away.
“What did I have?””
She smiled sadly.
“A family.””
The answer surprised me.
Because years ago, that was exactly what Victoria wanted.
Not money.
Not a title.
A place where she belonged.
But she had destroyed the very thing she wanted.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you,” I admitted.
“I understand.””
“But I know one thing.””
She looked at me.
“You were manipulated.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“That doesn’t erase what I did.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“It doesn’t.””
For the first time, Victoria accepted the truth.
A week later, Daniel and I stood outside Blackthorn Manor.
The sun was setting.
For the first time in ten years, my brother looked peaceful.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For making you carry my secret.””
I smiled sadly.
“You were trying to protect me.””
He laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
He looked at the house.
“So what happens now?””
I looked at Blackthorn Manor.
A place built on secrets.
A place almost destroyed by them.
But maybe a place that could finally become something else.
“I think we rebuild.””
Daniel nodded.
Then he reached into his pocket.
And handed me one final envelope.
My smile disappeared.
“What is this?””
His expression changed.
“I found it after Marcus was arrested.””
“From who?””
Daniel looked toward the manor.
“I don’t know.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
Only one sentence.
My hands began shaking.
Because the handwriting was familiar.
But impossible.
*“Rose, if you believe Marcus was the beginning, you are not ready for the truth.””*
I looked at Daniel.
“Who wrote this?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we both knew.
There was only one person who could have written it.
Someone who knew everything.
Someone who had been missing from the story.
Someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
At the bottom of the page was a name.
May you like
A name that made my blood run cold.
*Edmund Blackthorn.*
