Chapter 8: The Brother Who Came Back
For ten years, I had imagined this moment.
I imagined running toward Daniel.
I imagined holding him so tightly that neither of us could breathe.
I imagined crying, laughing, asking a thousand questions at once.
But reality was different.
Because when my brother finally stood in front of me, alive after a decade of silence, I couldn’t move.
I could only stare.
My mind was trying to understand something my heart had already accepted.
Daniel was alive.
The person I had mourned.
The person I had searched for.
The person I had blamed myself for losing.
Was standing ten feet away from me.
“Rose…”
His voice broke.
And that was when everything inside me shattered.
I crossed the room before I even realized I was moving.
I hit his chest with my fists.
Not hard.
Just enough to release ten years of pain.
“You’re alive.””
My voice cracked.
“You’re alive.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“You let me think you were dead.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury you.””
“I know.””
I pushed him away.
“Do you know what that did to me?””
Tears filled his eyes.
“Yes.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice trembled.
“You don’t know what it was like waking up every morning wondering if I failed you.””
Daniel looked down.
“I know because I was watching.””
The words stopped me.
“What?””
Arthur stepped forward.
“You were watching her?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I had to.””
Arthur’s expression hardened.
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Daniel accepted the anger.
“I deserve it.””
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
“You allowed my wife to suffer for ten years.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I know.””
Arthur took a step closer.
“Then explain.””
Daniel remained silent for several seconds.
Then he walked toward the old table.
“There is something you both need to understand.””
He picked up the envelope I had opened.
“The night I disappeared was not the night I died.””
I stared.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at the broken windows of the chapel.
“I found out someone inside Blackthorn was working with someone outside the family.””
Arthur frowned.
“Who?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I never discovered the second person.””
“Then how did you survive?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because someone saved me.””
“Who?””
His expression became serious.
“Your father.””
Arthur froze.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“Richard Blackthorn.””
Silence.
Arthur looked away.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It will.””
Daniel walked toward him.
“Your father knew what your grandfather had done.””
Arthur stared.
“What did he know?””
“The truth about the inheritance.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Tell us everything.””
He nodded.
“Edmund Blackthorn didn’t build the empire alone. He took it.””
The words echoed through the chapel.
“Your family’s fortune was connected to Rose’s ancestors. There was a legal agreement that would have transferred ownership away from the Blackthorns.””
Arthur looked stunned.
“And my grandfather destroyed the agreement.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Power.””
Daniel’s answer was simple.
“And when people like Edmund Blackthorn risk losing power, they do anything to keep it.””
I looked down.
“All these years…”
Daniel looked at me.
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His expression changed.
Pain.
“I tried.””
The answer surprised me.
“What?””
“The first year, I tried three times.””
“Then why didn’t I see you?””
“Because someone was watching you.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
Daniel looked toward Arthur.
“That’s the question we never answered.””
Arthur frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel sighed.
“It means the person who hunted me knew exactly how to control this family.””
He walked to the wall.
There were old markings carved into the stone.
The same symbol.
The black circle.
The line through the center.
“The organization behind this symbol has existed for decades.””
Arthur stared.
“What organization?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not an organization.””
“Then what?””
“A group of people.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked at him.
“People with money. Influence. Connections.””
A chill moved through me.
“People inside Blackthorn?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
But he didn’t need to.
Arthur understood.
“You’re saying my family is involved.””
“I’m saying someone in your family has been involved.””
Arthur looked away.
Then quietly:
“My father.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
The answer surprised us.
“No?””
“Richard made mistakes. He hid things. He protected the wrong people.””
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“But he was trying to fix it.””
Arthur’s face tightened.
“Then why did he fake his death?””
“Because he was being hunted too.””
The room became silent.
I thought about Richard.
The guilt in his eyes.
The years he spent hiding.
Maybe he wasn’t innocent.
But maybe he wasn’t the monster either.
“Then who is?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“That’s why I brought you here.””
He reached into his coat.
And pulled out a small black notebook.
My breath stopped.
“The notebook.””
Daniel nodded.
“The original evidence.””
“But you gave me a notebook.””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“Then why did it disappear?””
“Because it was copied.””
I stared.
“What?””
“The notebook I gave you contained information that could expose everyone involved.””
Daniel opened it.
“But before I disappeared, someone took the original.””
Arthur stepped closer.
“Then what was the notebook Rose had?””
“A trap.””
My blood ran cold.
Someone had planted false evidence.
Someone wanted me to believe I held the truth.
Daniel turned the pages.
“And it worked.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because the person behind everything knew you would protect the family.””
I didn’t understand.
“Why?””
“Because that’s who you are.””
His voice softened.
“You always choose to save people.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Daniel looked at Arthur.
“And they knew Arthur would love you enough to forgive you.””
Arthur looked away.
The silence between us carried years of damage.
Then Daniel placed the notebook on the table.
“There is one final piece.””
“What piece?””
“The identity of the person who ordered my disappearance.””
My heart raced.
“You know?””
Daniel nodded.
“I found out three days ago.””
Arthur stared.
“Then why wait?””
“Because I needed Rose here.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Because the person who betrayed us…”
He paused.
“…is someone you trust.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“No.””
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
That terrified me more.
Because Daniel was never afraid of names.
Never.
Except this one.
Finally, he spoke.
“Someone who stood beside you for years.””
Arthur’s eyes narrowed.
“Victoria?””
Daniel didn’t respond.
But the silence was enough.
I felt my stomach drop.
Victoria.
The woman who had lived with us.
The woman who called me family.
The woman who claimed she hated Blackthorn because she had been ignored.
Daniel looked at me.
“She wasn’t only angry.””
“Then what was she?””
Daniel’s expression darkened.
“She was recruited.””
The chapel went silent.
“By who?””
Daniel looked at the door.
And suddenly, his face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“What?””
He whispered:
“Because they know I’m here.””
A sound came from outside.
Footsteps.
Multiple footsteps.
Arthur moved immediately.
“Stay behind me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Arthur looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel reached into his coat.
“I spent ten years running from them.””
The footsteps stopped outside the chapel.
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m done running.””
The door handle moved.
Once.
Twice.
Then the door slowly opened.
Victoria stood there.
But she wasn’t alone.
Behind her were two men wearing black coats.
And beside them…
Was Richard Blackthorn.
Arthur froze.
“Father?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
His face filled with sadness.
“I’m sorry.””
My heart sank.
Because I finally understood.
The truth was never about who disappeared.
It was about who had been controlling everything while we searched.
Victoria stepped inside.
Her eyes met mine.
And for the first time…
She looked like she was not my enemy.
She looked like she was afraid.
“Rose,” she whispered.
“Please listen to me.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Victoria…”
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know they were going to kill you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then one of the men behind her raised something in his hand.
A weapon.
Arthur moved.
Richard shouted:
“Stop!””
But it was too late.
The man smiled.
And said:
“The Blackthorn family has kept this secret long enough.””
Then he pointed the weapon.
Not at Daniel.
May you like
Not at Arthur.
At me.
