Chapter 8: The Shadow Behind My Father
The message stared back at me.
A few words.
A lifetime of questions.
*Now ask Adrian who was standing behind your father.*
My fingers tightened around the phone.
I looked at Adrian.
He didn’t need to say anything.
His face had already answered.
He knew.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
Adrian looked down.
“Claire…”
“You know who was behind my father.””
His silence was enough.
I stepped back.
“No.””
His eyes lifted.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I am done listening to explanations that come after the damage is already done.””
“Claire.””
“Who was it?””
Nobody spoke.
Eleanor looked away.
That was when I knew.
She knew too.
My entire life was surrounded by people who knew the truth and decided I wasn’t strong enough to handle it.
“Who was standing behind my father?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
And when he opened them again, the fear was gone.
Only guilt remained.
“It was your mother.””
The world stopped.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Eleanor’s face fell.
“Adrian—”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She deserves the truth.””
I looked between them.
“My mother?””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“She was there.””
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“My mother died three years after my father.””
“Yes.””
“She couldn’t have been there.””
“She was.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t process it.
“So now both my parents are full of secrets?””
“Claire.””
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“My father faked his death. My aunt disappeared. My husband secretly knew everything. And now you’re telling me my mother was involved?””
Adrian didn’t move.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like everyone I loved was living another life.””
The words came out softer than I expected.
That hurt more.
Because it was true.
Adrian looked at me.
“I don’t think your mother was your enemy.””
I looked at him.
“Then what was she?””
He hesitated.
“Someone who was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was afraid.””
“Yes.””
“And I was the only one who didn’t get a choice.””
That sentence silenced everyone.
Because nobody could argue with it.
I walked toward the window.
The city lights blurred through my tears.
“My mother spent years telling me my father was gone.””
“Yes.””
“She watched me cry for him.””
“Yes.””
“She let me believe I had lost him.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian’s voice softened.
“Because she thought she was protecting you too.””
I turned around.
“You don’t get to defend her.””
“I’m not.””
“Sounds like it.””
“I’m explaining.””
“That’s what you always do.””
His face tightened.
“What?””
“You explain why you hurt me.””
The words hit him.
Good.
Because they were true.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked away.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I turned back.
“What?””
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””
His voice was quiet.
“I’m asking you to understand that every decision I made came from fear.””
“And every decision you made took something from me.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Because anger was easier when he fought back.
But Adrian wasn’t fighting anymore.
He was accepting every wound.
“Tell me everything.””
His eyes met mine.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
A pause.
“But I need to know.””
Adrian nodded.
He sat down at the table.
“The night your father disappeared, he wasn’t running from Marcus.””
“Then who?””
“Your mother.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“She was trying to stop him from revealing something.””
“About what?””
“About your family.””
I frowned.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
Adrian looked at Eleanor.
“Your father discovered that your mother had been working with Marcus.””
My breath caught.
“No.””
Eleanor looked down.
“I didn’t want you to hear it this way.””
I stared at her.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“You knew my mother betrayed him?””
“I knew she was involved.””
The room spun.
“But why?””
Adrian answered.
“Because Marcus threatened her.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Claire—”
“My mother loved my father.””
“She did.””
“Then she wouldn’t do that.””
Adrian’s expression softened.
“That’s the hardest part.””
I waited.
“She loved him.””
A pause.
“But she was also afraid.””
I sat down.
Everything felt too heavy.
“What did Marcus have on her?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“Your mother made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She trusted the wrong person.””
“Who?””
Eleanor looked at Adrian.
“Marcus wasn’t always who he became.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Adrian leaned forward.
“Your mother knew Marcus before your father did.””
The pieces started moving.
Slowly.
Painfully.
“She was close to him?””
“Yes.””
“How close?””
Adrian hesitated.
“Before she married your father, Marcus was the person she planned to marry.””
The room became silent.
I stared.
“My mother and Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“And my father knew?””
“Yes.””
“Then why would he trust him?””
“Because Daniel believed people could change.””
I closed my eyes.
That sounded like my father.
Always believing there was good in everyone.
Even when there wasn’t.
“What happened between my mother and Marcus?””
Adrian looked at the USB drive.
“I think your father recorded the answer.””
I looked at the laptop.
The video.
The one that ended before the truth came.
“There’s more?””
“Yes.””
“But it stopped.””
Adrian looked confused.
“It shouldn’t have.””
“What?””
He grabbed the laptop.
He checked the file.
His expression changed.
“What?””
“Someone edited it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Someone removed part of the video.””
“Can you recover it?””
“I can try.””
Adrian connected the drive.
For a few moments, nobody spoke.
Then the screen flashed.
A hidden folder appeared.
My father’s name.
A second video.
Created one day after the first.
I stared.
“Play it.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Claire—”
“Play it.””
He pressed the button.
The screen turned black.
Then my father appeared again.
But this time, he looked different.
Not afraid.
Determined.
“Claire.””
My eyes filled instantly.
“If you’re watching this, then I failed to protect you.””
I covered my mouth.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“I need you to understand something.””
A pause.
“Your mother did not betray me.””
I looked at Adrian.
He froze.
The video continued.
“She was trying to save me.””
My heartbeat raced.
“What?””
Adrian whispered.
My father continued.
“Marcus made her believe she had no choice. He threatened our family. He threatened Claire.””
The screen flickered.
Then my father leaned closer.
“The person you should fear is not the person who stood behind me.””
A pause.
“It’s the person who told them where I was.””
My breath stopped.
Adrian’s expression changed.
Because he knew.
My father continued.
“And that person is someone Claire trusts completely.””
The video cut.
Again.
But this time, there was no fear.
Only one final frame.
A reflection in the window behind my father.
A person standing there.
Watching.
Adrian froze.
“Who is it?””
I whispered.
He didn’t answer.
He was staring at the screen.
At the reflection.
At the face barely visible in the glass.
Then slowly, he said:
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Adrian?””
His face had gone white.
“Who is it?””
He stood.
Taking one step back.
Like the answer physically hurt.
“That’s impossible.””
“Tell me.””
He looked at me.
And when he spoke, his voice was barely there.
“The person who betrayed your father…”
A pause.
“The person who gave Marcus his location…”
His eyes moved toward Eleanor.
Then toward me.
“It was someone who was in this room when your father recorded that video.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at the screen again.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Someone who has been lying to us since the beginning.””
