Chapter 2: The Secret He Buried
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The hallway around us blurred.
The nurses walking past, the distant ringing phones, the soft footsteps against the hospital floor—all of it faded until there was only Adrian standing in front of me.
And that question.
“Why did you think I wanted that divorce?””
I stared at him.
Because I had spent two months trying to understand the exact opposite.
Why he wanted it.
Why he stopped fighting.
Why the man who once crossed three states just to surprise me on my birthday could sign divorce papers with a hand that never trembled.
My fingers tightened around the ultrasound folder.
“Because you told me you did.””
Adrian’s face changed.
A small crack appeared in the armor he wore so well.
“I never said I wanted to leave you.””
I almost laughed.
“Adrian, you literally handed me the documents.””
“I handed you documents because I thought you were going to ask for them.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
He looked away.
For the first time since I had known him, he looked lost.
Not angry.
Not cold.
Lost.
“Let’s get out of here.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“You’re tired. You shouldn’t be standing in a hospital hallway after midnight having this conversation.””
“I’m not going anywhere until you explain what you mean.””
His eyes met mine.
“Claire…”
“No.”” My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say my name like that and expect everything to disappear.””
A silence settled between us.
Then Adrian nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
That surprised me.
Adrian Cross rarely admitted anything.
Especially mistakes.
“Then tell me the truth.””
He looked down at the floor.
And for a few seconds, I saw the man I married.
Not the CEO.
Not the man on magazine covers.
The man who used to fall asleep with his hand wrapped around mine.
“The truth is complicated.””
“Try me.””
His jaw tightened.
“Someone was threatening you.””
The words landed like a physical blow.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Adrian looked around the hallway before lowering his voice.
“Not just you. Your family too.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
And that silence told me everything.
There was a name.
A person.
A reason.
“Adrian.””
His eyes moved back to mine.
“I couldn’t tell you.””
“Why?””
“Because if you knew, you would have tried to help me.””
I frowned.
“Of course I would have.””
“Exactly.””
The pain in his voice confused me.
“You’re talking like caring about you was a problem.””
“It was.””
I stepped back.
“How?””
His expression hardened slightly.
“Because whoever was behind it knew you were my weakness.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
Weakness.
I remembered all the times Adrian refused to show emotion. All the times people called him heartless because he never let anyone see inside.
But with me, he had always been different.
“You could have told me,” I whispered.
“I couldn’t.””
“You could have trusted me.””
“I trusted you more than anyone.””
“Then why did you shut me out?””
His eyes lowered.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
I looked at him, waiting for the explanation that would make everything make sense.
But another part of me was angry.
A deep, burning anger that had lived inside me since the day he left.
“You made that decision alone.””
“Yes.””
“You decided what I could handle.””
“Yes.””
“You destroyed our marriage without letting me choose.””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
I looked away.
Because a small part of me understood.
And I hated that.
I hated that after everything, after all the pain, I could still see the reason behind his actions.
The nurse walked by again.
“Claire, do you need anything before you leave?””
I opened my mouth.
Before I could answer, Adrian spoke.
“She needs rest.””
I turned sharply.
“Don’t.””
His expression softened.
“I’m not trying to control you.””
“Then stop acting like you know what’s best for me.””
He nodded.
“Okay.””
The simple answer caught me off guard.
He looked different.
Broken, almost.
“I’m sorry.””
I froze.
Adrian Cross apologized to almost no one.
Not publicly.
Not privately.
Not even when he was wrong.
But now he stood in front of me, apologizing.
“I’m sorry I made you believe I stopped loving you.””
My throat tightened.
“Did you?””
His eyes lifted.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Like he had been carrying it for months.
“No, Claire. I never stopped.””
I looked down.
Because hearing those words was dangerous.
They were the words I had wanted for sixty-one days.
But they came too late.
“Then why didn’t you say that before?””
His face fell.
“Because I thought if you hated me, you would stay away.””
I stared at him.
“What does that even mean?””
“It means I knew you.””
A bitter smile crossed my lips.
“You didn’t know me well enough to know I deserved the truth.””
His silence was painful.
Then his phone rang.
The sound cut through the hallway.
Adrian glanced at the screen.
Something changed immediately.
The softness disappeared.
The fear returned.
He answered.
“Speak.””
I watched his expression become unreadable.
A few seconds passed.
Then he said:
“No.””
A pause.
“No one touches her.””
My stomach dropped.
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I wondered if this had never been about a divorce.
Maybe it had always been about something bigger.
Something dangerous.
“Adrian?””
He turned away from me.
“I said no.””
The voice on the other end continued speaking.
His hand tightened around the phone.
Then he whispered:
“If they know about the baby, we have a bigger problem.””
My blood went cold.
He realized I heard him.
The call ended.
Neither of us spoke.
“You told someone?””
His eyes widened slightly.
“No.””
“Then how would they know?””
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
His expression shifted.
Like he was making a decision.
A terrible one.
“Claire, listen to me carefully.””
I felt my heartbeat quicken.
“From this moment on, you cannot go anywhere alone.””
I stared at him.
“You’re serious.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at my stomach.
Then back at me.
“Because the person who wanted me to leave you…”
He swallowed.
“Now knows I failed.””
The words sent a chill through me.
I wrapped my arms around myself.
“Who is it?””
Adrian looked toward the hospital entrance.
For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t answer.
Then he said a name.
A name I recognized.
A name that made no sense.
“Marcus Vale.””
I froze.
The billionaire investor who had appeared in every business magazine beside Adrian for years.
His closest partner.
His friend.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
“Why would he want to hurt me?””
Adrian’s eyes became darker.
“Because he knows something about my family.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Something I should have told you before we got married.””
The words hung between us.
Before we got married.
Not after.
Not during the divorce.
Before.
A secret that existed from the very beginning.
I stepped closer.
“What secret?””
Adrian opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
A shadow moved near the hospital entrance.
Someone standing just outside the glass doors.
Watching.
Adrian noticed too.
His entire body changed.
“Claire.””
The way he said my name made my heart race.
“What?””
“Do you trust me?””
I almost said no.
I wanted to.
After everything he had done, I wanted to protect myself.
But then I remembered the way he looked when he heard our baby’s heartbeat.
The way his hands shook.
The way a man who feared nothing looked terrified of losing us.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
Adrian nodded.
“I understand.””
He stepped between me and the entrance.
Then he said quietly:
“But I need you to know one thing.””
“What?””
His eyes never left the person outside.
“The divorce was never because I stopped loving you.””
A long pause.
“It was because I found out the person trying to destroy me was someone you trusted.””
My breath caught.
“Someone I trusted?””
Adrian looked back at me.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“Claire…”
May you like
His voice dropped.
“It was someone inside our home.””
