Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Was Erased
The police station smelled of burnt coffee and wet coats.
Claire sat across from Emily Carter, studying the woman from the photograph.
Emily looked older than she remembered.
Her hair was shorter, and a faint scar crossed her left eyebrow.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
“Mrs. Harper,” Emily began.
“Please call me Claire.””
Emily nodded.
“I don't know where to start.””
“Start with my mother.””
Emily looked down.
“Her name is Elizabeth.””
Claire's breath caught.
“Elizabeth Carter?””
“Yes. She used your mother's maiden name after she disappeared.””
“Why?””
“Because Margaret had people looking for her.””
Claire leaned forward.
“What did Margaret want?””
Emily opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
“Your mother had something Margaret desperately wanted.””
Claire looked at the envelope.
“What?””
“The original trust agreement. The document that proves you own forty percent of Harper Development.””
Claire shook her head.
“But Nathan said Margaret had been stealing company money.””
“She has. For more than twenty years.””
Emily placed several photographs on the table.
“Your father discovered the theft shortly before he died. He had hired an auditor to investigate the company's accounts.””
Claire picked up one photograph.
It showed her father standing beside a black car.
A man stood near the driver's door.
Claire recognized him from the wedding photographs.
Her uncle, Robert.
Her mother's younger brother.
“That's my uncle.””
Emily nodded.
“Robert Carter.””
“What does he have to do with this?””
Emily folded her hands.
“Your uncle was the accountant who helped Margaret hide the stolen money.””
Claire felt sick.
“He was my mother's brother.””
“He was also the person who gave Margaret access to your father's financial records.””
Claire stared at the photographs.
For years, she had believed her uncle had moved overseas after her mother died.
He had sent birthday cards.
Christmas presents.
Occasional emails.
He had even attended her wedding.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Your mother tried.””
Emily's voice softened.
“She contacted you several times. But every message was intercepted.””
Claire looked up.
“By whom?””
Emily didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she slid another photograph across the table.
It showed Claire's childhood home.
A woman stood behind the curtains.
Her mother.
On the back was a handwritten date.
March 2019.
Claire's hands shook.
“She came to my house?””
“Yes. She watched you from across the street.””
“Why didn't she knock?””
“Because someone was following her.””
Claire covered her face.
She imagined her mother standing outside her home, watching her daughter through a window.
She imagined herself inside, cooking dinner, unaware.
“Did she ask about me?””
Emily nodded.
“Every single time I saw her.””
Claire began crying.
“What about Lily?””
Emily reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small drawing.
It showed two little girls holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
One had long brown hair.
The other had dark curls.
At the bottom were two names.
Claire and Lily.
Claire stared.
“Did she draw this?””
“Lily did.””
“How old is she?””
“Eleven.””
Claire touched the paper.
“Does she know about me?””
Emily smiled sadly.
“She knows she has a sister. Your mother showed her your photographs.””
Claire swallowed.
“Where is she?””
Emily looked toward Detective Brooks.
“I can't tell you.””
Claire frowned.
“Why not?””
“Because the last time I gave someone your mother's location, she disappeared.””
“I'm not going to hurt her.””
“I know.””
Emily's eyes filled.
“But I don't know who else is listening.””
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
“Emily, you need to understand that Margaret Harper is in custody. She can't reach your mother through the usual channels.””
Emily shook her head.
“Margaret isn't the only person involved.””
Brooks exchanged a glance with Claire.
“Who else?””
Emily reached into her bag and removed a small digital recorder.
“Nathan asked me to keep this safe.””
Claire stared.
“Nathan gave you that?””
“Before he was attacked.””
Emily pressed play.
Static crackled.
Then Nathan's voice filled the room.
“If anything happens to me, Claire needs to know the truth. Margaret isn't working alone. Robert has been helping her move money, hide records, and silence anyone who asks questions.””
Claire gripped the edge of the table.
Nathan continued.
“But there's something else. The original trust was never just about the company. My father included a second clause.””
A pause.
“If Claire ever discovers who her biological father was, the entire trust becomes irrevocable. Nobody can change it, transfer it, or challenge her ownership.””
Claire looked at Emily.
“Why would that matter?””
Emily stopped the recording.
“Because Margaret has been trying to get the trust amended for years.””
Brooks leaned forward.
“Can she do that?””
“Not without Claire's signature.””
Claire remembered the documents Margaret had wanted Nathan to obtain.
The marriage.
The sudden interest in family finances.
The constant requests for signatures.
She had thought they were ordinary business matters.
They had been trying to take everything from her.
“Why did Nathan marry me?”” Claire asked quietly.
Emily looked at her.
“He married you because Margaret wanted him to.””
Claire's face tightened.
“But?””
“But he stayed because he fell in love with you.””
Emily reached across the table.
“I was there when he discovered the truth. He spent weeks trying to find a way to tell you without destroying your life.””
Claire looked down.
“He should have told me.””
“Yes,” Emily whispered.
“He should have.””
For several moments, nobody spoke.
Then Emily pulled out another envelope.
“This was left with your mother.””
Claire opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
Her mother's.
My darling Claire,
If you're reading this, then something has happened to me, or someone has finally found the truth.
I never wanted to keep your father from you. I was trying to keep you alive.
There is something you don't know about the night he died.
Claire stopped.
Her fingers trembled.
She continued reading.
Your father wasn't the only person in that car.
Someone else survived the accident.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
Claire looked up.
“Who?””
Emily's face had gone pale.
She pointed to the final paragraph.
Claire read it again.
The person who survived was Robert Carter.
Her uncle.
The man who had attended her wedding.
The man who had sent her Christmas cards.
The man who had stood beside her at Nathan's funeral.
Claire looked at Detective Brooks.
“Where is he now?””
Brooks pulled out his phone.
“According to our records, Robert Carter is currently in Pennsylvania.””
Claire's voice shook.
“He's alive?””
“Yes.””
Emily nodded.
“And he knows about the letter.””
Claire felt a chill.
“How?””
Emily looked toward the station's glass entrance.
“Because he called me twenty minutes ago.””
Brooks stood immediately.
“What did he say?””
Emily's voice dropped.
“He said Margaret was only supposed to scare Nathan.””
Claire frowned.
“Only supposed to?””
Emily swallowed.
“Robert said he never expected Nathan to survive the medication.””
Claire stood.
“Then he's responsible for what happened to my husband.””
“Possibly,” Brooks replied.
“We need to locate him before he leaves the state.””
Emily suddenly grabbed Claire's hand.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
“Your mother left a message for you.””
Claire leaned closer.
Emily whispered the words.
“She said that if Robert ever came looking for Lily, you must never let him take her.””
Claire's heart pounded.
“Why would he want Lily?””
Emily looked at her.
“Because Lily has the original trust document.””
Brooks immediately reached for his radio.
“Get a unit to Emily's last known address. Now.””
But Emily shook her head.
“It's too late.””
Claire stared.
“What do you mean?””
Emily pulled out her phone and showed them a message.
It had arrived only moments earlier.
A photograph showed a little girl standing outside a school.
Brown curls.
Yellow bracelet.
Lily.
Beneath the photograph was a short message.
Tell Claire that her sister is coming home.
Claire felt her stomach turn.
Then another message appeared.
This time, there was no photograph.
Only six words.
Your uncle is bringing her to you.
And Claire realized that the people who had destroyed her family were no longer hiding.
May you like
They were coming for the last person who knew the truth.
Lily.
