Chapter 5: The Woman in the Photograph

Claire stared at the photograph until the screen dimmed.

Her mother looked exactly as she remembered her.

Dark shoulder-length hair.

A small silver necklace.

The same smile Claire had seen in every childhood photograph.

But the date printed beneath the image was impossible.

September 18, 2024.

Her mother had supposedly died in 2014.

“Detective Brooks?””

He turned from the hallway.

“What is it?””

Claire held up her phone.

“Someone just sent me this.””

He examined the photograph.

“Who are these women?””

“My mother. And Emily Carter.””

“You're certain?””

Claire nodded.

“My mother died twelve years ago.””

Brooks looked at the date.

“Then someone wants you to believe she's still alive.””

“Or she never died.””

He didn't answer.

Instead, he called another officer and requested an urgent search of Emily Carter's last known address.

Claire stared at the picture.

There was something else.

Her mother wasn't simply standing beside Emily.

She was holding a small child.

A little girl with brown curls.

Claire zoomed in.

The child's face was partly obscured by the woman's coat.

But the little girl wore a yellow bracelet.

Claire recognized it.

She had one almost identical.

Her mother had bought it for her when she was four.

“Detective.””

Brooks looked up.

“There's a child in this photograph.””

He examined it closely.

“Can you identify her?””

Claire shook her head.

“No. But that bracelet belonged to me.””

“Do you have any siblings?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

Claire's voice trembled.

“My mother always told me I was an only child.””

Brooks put the phone in an evidence sleeve.

“We need to find Emily.””

Before Claire could answer, her phone rang.

The hospital.

She answered immediately.

“Hello?””

“Mrs. Harper? This is Nurse Collins from intensive care.””

Claire's heart jumped.

“Is Nathan okay?””

“He's awake. The doctors have reduced his sedation, and he's asking for you.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Can I come?””

“Of course.””

She looked toward Detective Brooks.

“I need to see my husband.””

“I'll take you.””

Twenty minutes later, Claire entered Nathan's room.

He was sitting slightly upright, his face pale and exhausted.

The moment he saw her, tears filled his eyes.

“Claire.””

She rushed to his bedside.

“Nathan.””

He reached for her hand.

She let him hold it, but her body remained tense.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he looked toward the door.

“Where's Ellie?””

“She's with my sister-in-law's neighbor. She's safe.””

Nathan nodded weakly.

“Thank God.””

Claire pulled a chair closer.

“Do you remember what happened?””

He closed his eyes.

“Margaret.””

Claire's jaw tightened.

“You knew she was trying to kill you?””

“I knew she was planning something. I didn't know she'd go that far.””

“What did she give you?””

“A drink.””

“When?””

“Tuesday night. She came to the house. Said she wanted to make peace.””

Claire remembered that evening.

Nathan had mentioned his mother had stopped by.

He had seemed unusually quiet afterward.

“What happened?””

“She brought whiskey. I barely drank any before I started feeling dizzy.””

“Why didn't you call me?””

“I tried.””

Nathan swallowed.

“I couldn't move. I heard her talking to someone. She said the paperwork was ready.””

Claire gripped the chair.

“Who was she talking to?””

“Dr. Whitmore.””

“The doctor who signed your death certificate?””

Nathan nodded.

“Margaret said I would be kept unconscious until the trust documents were signed. She thought I would eventually wake up somewhere she controlled.””

Claire stared at him.

“And when you didn't cooperate?””

Nathan looked away.

“She decided I was easier to bury.””

Claire covered her mouth.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the steady monitor.

Then she remembered the photograph.

“Who is Emily Carter?””

Nathan's expression changed.

“Where did you hear that name?””

“Your safe. I found a photograph of her with a baby.””

Nathan closed his eyes.

“Emily worked for me.””

“I know.””

“She discovered something Margaret had been hiding.””

“What?””

He looked at her.

“Your mother.””

Claire went completely still.

“What about her?””

Nathan struggled to sit higher.

“Your mother didn't die in 2014.””

Claire felt the air leave her lungs.

“Don't.””

“Claire—”

“Don't you dare tell me that my mother is alive unless you can prove it.””

Nathan reached for her hand.

“She came to see me six months ago.””

Claire shook her head.

“You saw my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In a town outside Pittsburgh. Emily arranged the meeting.””

Claire's eyes filled.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your mother was terrified.””

“Of Margaret?””

Nathan nodded.

“She told me that Margaret had threatened her for years. She said she had proof about your father's death.””

Claire stood.

“You knew my mother was alive, and you let me believe she was dead?””

“I wanted to bring her home.””

“You wanted?””

“I was trying to make sure she was safe before I told you.””

Claire laughed through her tears.

“Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle.””

Nathan looked devastated.

“I'm sorry.””

She turned away.

“Who is the little girl in the photograph?””

Nathan didn't answer.

“Nathan?””

He swallowed.

“Her name is Lily.””

“Who is she?””

Nathan looked directly into Claire's eyes.

“She's your sister.””

Claire sat down slowly.

“No.””

“She was born eight years after you.””

“Why didn't my mother tell me?””

“Because Margaret found out about her.””

Claire stared at the hospital blanket.

Her mother had been alive.

She had a sister.

And the people she trusted had hidden both facts from her.

“Where are they now?””

Nathan looked toward the window.

“I don't know.””

Claire leaned forward.

“Tell me everything.””

He took a shaky breath.

“Your father discovered that Margaret had been stealing from the company. He planned to expose her. But before he could, he died in what everyone believed was a car accident.””

Claire remembered the report.

A wet road.

A vehicle that had lost control.

A fatal collision.

“Was it an accident?””

Nathan shook his head.

“No.””

Claire's hands began trembling.

“Who killed him?””

Nathan hesitated.

Then he said something that made her blood run cold.

“Margaret didn't kill him alone.””

“Who helped her?””

Nathan's eyes filled with fear.

“Someone who has been standing beside you for years.””

Claire stared.

“Who?””

Before Nathan could answer, the hospital room door opened.

Detective Brooks entered with a tablet.

“Mrs. Harper, we found Emily Carter.””

Claire stood.

“Where is she?””

“She's at the police station.””

“Is my mother with her?””

Brooks hesitated.

“No.””

Claire's heart sank.

“Then where is she?””

The detective looked at Nathan.

“That's the problem. Emily claims your mother has been missing for eleven days.””

Nathan suddenly grabbed Claire's wrist.

“Eleven days?””

Brooks nodded.

Nathan's face went white.

“Then Margaret already found her.””

Claire looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nathan struggled to breathe.

“Margaret wasn't trying to hide your mother from you anymore.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“She was trying to find out where she hid the original trust.””
