Chapter 8: The Recording That Could Destroy Them

Claudia shoved the flash drive into Nia's palm.

“Take it.””

Nia closed her fingers around it.

“What about you?””

“Go through the back.””

Margot moved toward the rear corridor, but Claudia caught her sleeve.

“Not you.””

Margot stared at her.

“You cannot expect me to leave you here with him.””

“I expect you to keep Evelyn's daughter safe. That's what you should have done six years ago.””

The words landed heavily.

Before Margot could answer, Richard Vale knocked again.

“Claudia, I know you've been talking to the girl. Don't make this harder than it needs to be.””

Nia's heart hammered against her ribs.

Claudia pointed toward a narrow door behind the cutting table.

“There's an alley outside. Go to the main road and call Daniel. Tell him you have the archive.””

Nia hesitated.

“I can't leave you.””

“You can, and you will.””

Claudia placed both hands on Nia's shoulders.

“Your mother spent her last months trying to protect you from a fight you didn't understand. Don't waste what she left behind by getting yourself hurt tonight.””

The front door shook under another forceful knock.

Nia slipped through the back door with Margot close behind her.

They emerged into a narrow alley filled with overturned crates and rain-soaked cardboard. Margot took out her phone and called Daniel.

Nia clutched the flash drive inside her fist.

For six years, she had believed her mother's story ended with a car accident.

Now she carried a recording that might reveal why Evelyn's designs had disappeared, why Vanessa had lied, and why Richard Vale had spent so long keeping the past buried.

They reached the street just as Daniel's colleague arrived in a gray sedan.

“Get in,” he said.

Margot opened the rear door.

Nia looked back toward the storefront.

A shadow moved behind the paper-covered window.

Then the lights went out.

“Where's Claudia?”” Nia asked.

Margot climbed into the car.

“She knows how to protect herself.””

But her voice lacked conviction.

At the atelier, Daniel was waiting in the conference room. He examined the flash drive without plugging it into his computer, then arranged for a digital forensics specialist to make a secure copy.

“Until we know what's on this, we shouldn't assume it proves anything,” he said.

Nia sat on the edge of a chair, unable to stop shaking her leg.

“Can we listen to it?””

“Once the copy is verified.””

Minutes passed.

Then the specialist entered carrying a laptop.

“The drive contains several audio files, scanned documents, and a series of dated design photographs. One audio file appears to be a personal recording.””

Daniel looked at Nia.

“Are you ready?””

She nodded.

He pressed play.

A burst of static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice emerged.

Nia recognized it immediately.

Her mother's voice.

“If you're hearing this, then something has happened that I hoped I could prevent.””

Nia's breath caught.

She pressed both hands over her mouth.

Evelyn continued.

“My name is Evelyn Carter. These are my original designs, and I am recording this because I have reason to believe they may be stolen or falsely attributed to another designer.””

Paper rustled.

“I trusted Richard Vale with the business side of my work. That was my first mistake. I trusted Vanessa with my records. That was my second.””

Nia went completely still.

Margot slowly turned toward her.

On the recording, Evelyn took a shaky breath.

“Vanessa has been sending copies of my sketches to Vale without my permission. I confronted her yesterday. She told me she was only sharing concepts, that Richard promised to pay her, and that nobody would be harmed.””

A pause followed.

Then Evelyn's voice grew firmer.

“When I told her I would report the theft, she threatened to make sure I lost everything.””

Nia stared at the laptop.

The woman who had raised her, fed her, and slapped her for refusing to surrender a dress had once stood in her mother's studio and helped a wealthy investor steal an entire collection.

But the recording wasn't finished.

Evelyn continued.

“I don't believe Vanessa understands what Richard intends to do. He doesn't want to buy the designs. He wants to erase my ownership so he can sell them without anyone challenging him.””

A door slammed in the background.

Someone spoke, but the voice was too muffled to identify.

Evelyn lowered her voice.

“If anything happens to me, the original records are in the private archive. The trust belongs to my daughter, Nia. She must never be told that her work is worthless. She must never be convinced that talent is something she should be ashamed of.””

Nia began to cry silently.

Margot reached for her hand.

The recording continued.

“I am afraid. I won't pretend otherwise. But I'm more afraid of raising my daughter in a world where people with money can steal from those without it and call the theft success.””

There was another rustle.

Then Evelyn said something that made Margot stand abruptly.

“Margot, if you ever hear this, please forgive me. I should have told you about the second contract. I should have trusted you enough to explain what Vanessa was doing.””

Margot covered her mouth.

Daniel paused the recording.

“What second contract?””

Margot looked stunned.

“I don't know.””

Nia wiped her cheeks.

“Keep playing it.””

Daniel resumed the audio.

Evelyn's voice became faint.

“The second contract establishes the original ownership of the Phoenix collection and names the beneficiary. Richard believes it was destroyed. It wasn't. I've placed a copy somewhere he would never think to look.””

A brief silence.

Then the final sentence came through clearly.

“If my daughter ever creates the Phoenix Gown herself, it will mean she has found her own way to carry my work forward. But she must never be forced to do it for anyone else.””

The recording ended.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Nia looked down at the design spread across her sketchbook.

The gown she was making was not a replica of her mother's work. It was an evolution of it, built from techniques Evelyn had taught her through childhood lessons and scraps of fabric left in drawers.

She had thought she was beginning again after losing everything.

Now she understood that she was carrying forward something her mother had deliberately left for her.

Daniel closed the laptop.

“This recording is potentially significant, but we need to authenticate it and corroborate its contents. We also need to locate the second contract.””

“Where would she hide it?”” Nia asked.

Margot remained lost in thought.

“Somewhere Richard wouldn't think to look,” she repeated.

Nia glanced at the old photographs Claudia had shown them.

Her mother's first studio.

The cutting table.

The wooden box.

Then she remembered something from childhood.

Whenever Evelyn finished a wedding dress, she used to place the final pattern inside a hollow book on the shelf. She said the best place to hide something important was somewhere everyone assumed was ordinary.

Nia sat upright.

“Her books.””

Margot turned.

“What?””

“My mother had a collection of fashion books. She used to hide patterns inside the covers because Vanessa complained about the mess. When we moved houses, I packed some of them myself.””

“Do you still have them?””

“Some. Vanessa kept most of Mom's things in the basement.””

Daniel frowned.

“Would you be able to access them safely?””

Nia thought of the locked basement cabinet and the old cardboard boxes she had been forbidden to touch.

“Not without going home.””

Before Daniel could respond, Nia's phone rang.

Her father.

She hadn't seen his name appear on her screen in weeks.

“Nia?”” he said when she answered. His voice sounded strained.

“Where are you?””

“At Margot Sinclair's studio.””

Silence.

Then her father whispered, “You've found the archive.””

Nia stood.

“You knew about it?””

“I knew your mother had left something behind. I didn't know where it was.””

“You knew Vanessa stole her designs?””

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?”” Nia's voice cracked.

“You let me live with her for six years. You let her tell me my mother's work was worthless. You let her treat me like I was nothing.””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what? The truth?””

Her father exhaled shakily.

“Nia, listen to me. Vanessa has been receiving money from Vale for years. I discovered the payments last month. When I confronted her, she told me that if I tried to expose her, she'd make certain you lost everything your mother left you.””

Nia felt sick.

“Why didn't you come to me?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The admission silenced her.

For years, Nia had imagined her father as a man who simply didn't care enough to fight for her.

Now she heard the shame in his voice.

“I should have protected you,” he said.

“I know that. I can't change what I did, but I can help you now.””

Nia closed her eyes.

“What do you know about the second contract?””

Her father paused.

Then he said, “I know where your mother hid it.””

“Where?””

“In the basement, behind the cabinet Vanessa keeps locked.””

Nia's fingers tightened around the phone.

“I'm coming home.””

“No,” her father said urgently.

“You need to understand something first. Vanessa knows the archive has been found. Richard called her less than an hour ago.””

Nia looked at Margot.

Her father's next words made her blood run cold.

“She's already destroyed most of your mother's belongings.””

May you like

A pause.

“And she's looking for the one thing that can prove the Phoenix collection belongs to you.””
