Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
For the first time in my life, I saw my father afraid.
Not worried.
Not stressed.
Afraid.
The kind of fear adults try to hide from children.
But I wasn't a little girl anymore.
Not after everything I had learned.
Not after discovering that the people around me had been lying for years.
Dad placed the phone on the table.
"She knows.""
"Who?""
"Rachel.""
I stared at him.
"She knows everything.""
The next morning, Dad called Rachel.
I listened from the hallway.
I knew I shouldn't.
But after years of people hiding things from me, I didn't feel guilty.
"I want to meet," Dad said.
A pause.
"Somewhere public.""
Another pause.
"Today.""
He ended the call.
When he saw me, he didn't pretend.
"You heard.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
He sighed.
"You're coming with me.""
I was surprised.
"You want me there?""
He looked at me.
"I spent too long deciding what you could handle.""
He grabbed his jacket.
"That was a mistake.""
We met Rachel at a small coffee shop.
She looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Not like the confident aunt who used to walk into our house carrying presents.
She looked like someone who had been running from something for years.
When she saw me, tears filled her eyes.
"Nia.""
I didn't answer.
She looked down.
"I know you're angry.""
I crossed my arms.
"Are you surprised?""
She flinched.
Good.
She should have.
Dad sat down.
"Start talking.""
Rachel looked at him.
"You found the files.""
"Yes.""
"And Claire?""
"She's gone.""
Rachel closed her eyes.
"Of course she is.""
I leaned forward.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel looked at me.
"It means she always runs when things stop going her way.""
Dad's voice hardened.
"Don't act innocent.""
Rachel nodded.
"I'm not.""
That surprised me.
She didn't argue.
She didn't deny it.
"I made mistakes.""
"Your mistakes almost destroyed my family.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Dad's voice shook.
"You helped someone who tried to take my daughter away.""
Rachel looked at me.
"I know.""
I wanted to leave.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked:
"Why?""
Rachel looked down.
"Because I was angry.""
I frowned.
"At me?""
"No.""
She looked at Dad.
"At him.""
Dad stared.
"What?""
Rachel took a breath.
"After your mother died, I blamed you.""
The words hurt.
Even though they weren't about me.
"I thought you moved on too quickly.""
Dad looked shocked.
"I never moved on.""
"I know that now.""
Rachel's eyes filled.
"But back then, I was angry. I thought you weren't fighting hard enough to find answers.""
Dad looked away.
"So you helped Claire?""
Rachel nodded.
"I gave her information.""
"What information?""
"Your financial situation. Your company structure. Things she used.""
My stomach turned.
"But you didn't kill Mom?""
Rachel looked at me.
"No.""
The answer came immediately.
"I would never hurt your mother.""
I studied her face.
For the first time, I believed her.
Not because she deserved it.
Because she looked broken.
"Then who did?""
Rachel reached into her bag.
Pulled out an envelope.
"I found this after Claire left.""
Dad took it.
"What is it?""
"Proof.""
Inside were copies of emails.
Messages.
Photos.
Dad read quickly.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
He handed me one page.
I didn't understand everything.
But I understood enough.
The emails showed Claire had been communicating with Thomas Reed.
The same man connected to my mother's investigation.
"Claire worked with him?""
Rachel nodded.
"She found out about Thomas before she met Marcus.""
Dad froze.
"What are you saying?""
Rachel looked at him.
"Claire didn't marry you because she loved you.""
My chest tightened.
"She married you because she needed access.""
Dad looked like he couldn't breathe.
I thought about every family dinner.
Every holiday.
Every time Claire hugged Dad.
Was it all fake?
Rachel continued.
"Thomas was losing control. Your mother had discovered the money he was hiding.""
"So Claire helped him?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Rachel looked at me.
"Because Thomas promised her a reward.""
The room felt cold.
Dad whispered:
"What reward?""
Rachel looked down.
"Your company.""
My father sat back.
The pieces connected.
Claire didn't want me gone because she hated me.
She wanted me gone because I was proof of the family she needed to destroy.
Then Rachel said something that changed everything.
"There is one thing you don't know.""
Dad looked up.
"What?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Claire didn't cause the accident.""
My heart stopped.
"Then who did?""
Rachel looked directly at me.
"Your father’s business partner.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Rachel nodded.
"Thomas Reed.""
Dad went silent.
"But why?""
Rachel's eyes filled.
"Because your mother wasn't just investigating stolen money.""
She took a breath.
"She discovered he had been using your father's company to hide everything.""
Dad stared.
"No.""
Rachel nodded.
"And when your mother threatened to expose him, he made sure she couldn't.""
I felt sick.
My mother hadn't died because of bad luck.
She died because she tried to do the right thing.
Then Rachel said the words I would never forget.
"Your mother knew she was in danger.""
I whispered:
"Then why didn't she leave?""
Rachel looked at me.
"Because she was trying to protect you.""
A tear fell down my face.
The waitress walked by.
Cars passed outside.
The world kept moving.
Even though mine had stopped.
Dad stood suddenly.
"We need to find Thomas.""
Rachel looked worried.
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because he knows you have the evidence now.""
My father froze.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel looked toward the window.
And then I noticed it.
A black car parked across the street.
Someone sitting inside.
Watching us.
May you like
Rachel whispered:
"He already knows.""
