The Seat Nobody Saved / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: The Choice That Changed Everything

Nobody slept.

Not after seeing Lily’s picture.

Not after knowing someone was waiting for us to make a decision.

Dad stood at the kitchen table with the police officer.

“We need a plan.””

Emily paced.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And she’s not going alone,” Dad said.

Emily looked at him.

“I lost twenty years.””

His expression softened.

“I know.””

“I can’t lose another minute.””

Dad stepped closer.

“You’re not the only one who loves her.””

That stopped her.

Because he was right.

Love had become something bigger than blood.

Something bigger than the secrets that had destroyed us.

By morning, we had a plan.

The police would track the location.

Dad, Ethan, and an officer would approach from the back.

Emily would call Daniel.

And Vanessa would be the one to get him talking.

Everyone hated the idea.

Especially Dad.

But Vanessa was the only person Daniel still trusted.

“I’ll do it,” she said.

Dad stared.

“You understand what could happen?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“You could go to prison.””

Her eyes lowered.

“I know.””

I watched her.

For the first time, I saw someone accepting consequences.

Not running from them.

Not hiding.

Accepting.

Before they left, Dad came to me.

“You stay here.””

I frowned.

“No.””

“Nia.””

“No.””

My voice surprised both of us.

“I’m tired of everyone deciding things for me.””

He went quiet.

I looked at him.

“I know I’m twelve.””

His face softened.

“But I’m part of this.””

He sighed.

Then he hugged me.

“You sound exactly like your mother.””

A tiny smile appeared.

“I’ll take that.””

Hours later, the waiting was unbearable.

Emily sat beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then she said:

“When this is over, I want to show you something.””

“What?””

“Where I lived.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I want you to know I wasn’t hiding from loving you.””

Her voice broke.

“I was hiding because I loved you too much and didn’t know how to fight.””

I looked down.

That was the hardest part.

Understanding someone didn’t mean the pain disappeared.

My phone rang.

Dad.

I answered immediately.

“Daddy?””

Silence.

Then his voice.

“Nia.””

Something was wrong.

“What happened?””

“We found Daniel.””

I sat up.

“Is Lily okay?””

Another silence.

That was enough.

“Dad.””

“She’s alive.””

I breathed again.

“But?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad?””

“He wasn’t alone.””

My heart sank.

“Who was with him?””

Dad’s voice became quiet.

“Someone we never expected.””

The line went silent.

“Who?””

Then I heard Emily gasp.

Because Dad wasn’t the only one who heard the answer.

The officer beside him had said the name.

A name that changed everything.

A name that explained how Daniel always knew where we were.

A name that meant the betrayal had been much closer than anyone realized.

Dad whispered:

May you like

“Nia…”

“Your grandfather is here.””
