The Seat Nobody Saved / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6: The Truth Emily Never Told

We left the motel within ten minutes.

No goodbye.

No explanations.

No time.

Dad drove.

Ethan sat beside him.

Emily sat in the back with me.

Nobody spoke.

The road disappeared behind us as the town became smaller.

I watched my mother’s hands.

They were folded tightly in her lap.

Like she was trying not to reach for me.

Like she wasn’t sure she had earned the right.

Finally, she whispered:

“You hate me.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

The answer surprised both of us.

“I don’t hate you.””

Her eyes filled.

“But you’re angry.””

I looked out the window.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“You should be.””

That was the first thing she said that didn’t make me feel like she was trying to fix it.

She accepted the hurt.

And somehow that mattered.

“Why didn’t you tell Dad?””

Emily looked down.

“Because Daniel knew everything about our lives.””

“But Dad would have helped.””

“I thought he would.””

“Then why?””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“Because Vanessa told me he wouldn’t.””

My heart stopped.

Dad looked in the rearview mirror.

“What?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“When I tried to come back, Vanessa met me.””

Nobody moved.

“She told me Marcus had moved on. She told me Nia was finally adjusting.””

Dad’s grip tightened on the steering wheel.

“She told you that?””

Emily nodded.

“She said if I returned, I would destroy the family you built.””

I stared ahead.

The same words.

The same weapon.

Don’t ruin this family.

“She lied.””

Emily looked at me.

“I know that now.””

Dad’s voice was full of pain.

“I would have chosen you.””

Emily looked at him.

“I know.””

A silence followed.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“But Vanessa wasn’t the only person afraid of Daniel.””

Dad frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Emily looked at Ethan.

“I never told you everything.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Emily.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“It’s time.””

The car became quiet.

“There was someone helping Daniel.””

Dad glanced back.

“Who?””

Emily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside your company.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

“Daniel wasn’t just watching me.””

She looked at him.

“He was watching you.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Dad pulled over.

The car stopped.

“What are you saying?””

Emily looked terrified.

“I’m saying Daniel knew your schedule. He knew your finances. He knew where Nia went to school.””

Dad went silent.

Then he looked at Ethan.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because we didn’t know who we could trust.””

Dad laughed quietly.

“So you trusted nobody?””

Emily looked at me.

“We trusted one person.””

A chill went through me.

“Who?””

Emily reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old phone.

Not a modern one.

A small, cracked device.

“I saved this because I knew someday I would need proof.””

She turned it on.

There was one recording.

One file.

Dad stared.

“What is that?””

Emily pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then a voice.

A woman’s voice.

A familiar voice.

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa.

Her voice came through the speaker.

“You need to leave Marcus alone.””

A man answered.

Daniel.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

“I did what you asked.””

“Not enough.””

“I kept Emily away.””

The world tilted.

Dad grabbed the phone.

“What?””

The recording continued.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“She’s gone. She’s not coming back.””

Daniel laughed.

“Good.””

A pause.

Then:

“And the girl?””

Vanessa went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What about her?””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Dad stared at the phone.

His face had gone completely empty.

Because now we knew.

Vanessa hadn’t just hidden the truth.

She had been part of it.

A few seconds later, Dad’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time, he answered immediately.

“Who are you?””

The voice on the other end laughed.

“You finally found the recording.””

Dad stood frozen.

Daniel continued.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””

My father’s eyes lifted.

And then Daniel said:

“Ask Vanessa why she never told you the girl in the recording wasn’t the only child Emily was trying to protect.””

Dad looked at me.

Confused.

Terrified.

“What girl?””

The call ended.

And nobody in the car moved.

Because suddenly, the secret wasn’t just about my mother.

It was about another child.

May you like

And somehow…

Emily had been protecting both of us.
