Chapter 9: The Choice She Made
The words sat in the air.
I helped her disappear.
Dad didn’t move.
Nobody moved.
The only sound was the rain beginning again against the truck windows.
“You helped her?””
Dad’s voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Amanda nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at her hands.
“Because she asked me to.””
Dad stared.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Amanda looked up.
“I don’t expect anyone to believe me.””
She looked at me.
“Especially not Ethan.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because a part of me wanted to hate her.
A part of me wanted to scream.
But another part remembered the moment she pulled Lily away.
The cold dinners.
The empty bowls.
The way she looked at me like I was a reminder of something painful.
I wanted to understand.
And I hated that I wanted to.
Dad stepped away.
“Start talking.””
Amanda nodded.
“Claire found out someone was following her.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
Everyone went silent.
Dad frowned.
“I thought he was dead.””
Amanda laughed sadly.
“So did everyone.””
She looked out the window.
“My father was not a good man.””
I listened.
Because for once, she wasn’t defending herself.
She was telling the truth.
“He controlled everything Claire and I did when we were younger.””
Rachel nodded.
“She’s telling the truth.””
Amanda continued.
“When Claire married you, she thought she was finally free.””
Dad looked down.
“I thought so too.””
“She was.””
Amanda paused.
“Until she found out he had been watching her.””
“Why?””
“Because of Ethan.””
My heart stopped.
Dad immediately looked at me.
“What about Ethan?””
Amanda swallowed.
“He believed Ethan belonged to him.””
Nobody spoke.
Dad’s face became cold.
“He thought he owned my son?””
Amanda nodded.
“He thought he could take Ethan and raise him himself.””
My fingers tightened around Dad’s hand.
Dad looked furious.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Amanda closed her eyes.
“Because Claire begged me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew you would go after him.””
Dad didn’t deny it.
“And?””
“She was afraid you would get hurt.””
Michael looked down.
“I tried to stop it.””
Dad looked at him.
“And you failed.””
Michael accepted that.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Amanda continued.
“Claire created a plan.””
“What plan?””
“She wanted everyone to think she left.””
Dad stared.
“She wanted to disappear long enough for him to stop searching.””
“And you helped.””
Amanda nodded.
“I helped her leave.””
“Where did she go?””
Amanda looked at Rachel.
Rachel answered.
“Different places.””
Dad shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“She was alive all this time?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she contact me?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rachel said:
“Because someone was watching.””
Dad looked at her.
“Who?””
Rachel glanced at Amanda.
Amanda whispered:
“My father.””
A cold silence filled the truck.
Then Dad’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Dad looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Daniel.””
Dad stood.
“Who is this?””
A laugh.
“You still ask that?””
Amanda’s face changed.
She knew.
Dad’s grip tightened.
“You’re alive.””
The man laughed.
“I always was.””
I looked at Amanda.
She looked terrified.
The voice continued.
“I heard you found the truth.””
Dad said nothing.
“You should have stayed away.””
“Where is Claire?””
A pause.
Then:
“Closer than you think.””
Dad looked around.
“What does that mean?””
The man ignored him.
“You always thought you saved her.””
His voice became colder.
“But you never asked why she ran.””
Dad’s expression changed.
The man continued.
“Ask Amanda what happened the night Claire disappeared.””
Amanda started crying.
Dad looked at her.
“What is he talking about?””
The call ended.
No goodbye.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Dad turned.
“Amanda.””
She looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She covered her face.
“I made a choice.””
“What choice?””
Amanda looked at me.
Then whispered:
“The night Claire left…”
She stopped.
Dad waited.
“The person who was supposed to take Ethan with her…”
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Amanda looked at me.
“I was supposed to bring you.””
Dad froze.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I heard you crying.””
I didn’t understand.
She continued.
“You were four years old.””
A memory flickered.
A dark hallway.
A woman crying.
Someone holding me.
I had forgotten.
Amanda whispered:
“You kept calling for your dad.””
Dad looked away.
“And?””
“And I realized something.””
Her voice broke.
“I couldn’t take you away from the only person who had ever made you feel safe.””
Nobody spoke.
For the first time, I saw Amanda as a person.
Not just the woman who hurt me.
A person who had made one good choice after many bad ones.
But Dad still looked hurt.
“Then why did you treat him like that?””
Amanda cried harder.
“Because every time I looked at him…”
She looked at me.
“I saw Claire.””
The answer was painful.
But it was real.
Dad sat down.
Nobody knew what to say.
Then Rachel’s phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
“What?””
Michael asked.
Rachel showed him.
Then Dad.
A location.
And one sentence.
*Claire is ready to come home.*
Dad stood immediately.
“Where?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at the others.
“The place where this all started.””
Dad grabbed his keys.
“Where?””
Rachel whispered:
“The old house.””
Amanda went pale.
“No.””
Dad looked at her.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“She would never go there.””
Rachel looked at her.
“She did.””
“Why?””
Rachel answered quietly:
“Because she wants Ethan to see the truth.””
Dad opened the truck door.
And as we drove toward the house where my mother vanished seven years ago…
I realized something.
May you like
I had spent my whole life wondering why my mother left.
But I never considered the possibility that she had been waiting for me to find her.
