Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Recording
The person who stepped out of the SUV was an older woman.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A face I didn’t recognize.
But Amanda did.
Her entire body went still.
“No.””
The woman looked at her.
“Amanda.””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
Dad moved closer to me.
“Who is that?””
Amanda didn’t answer.
The woman walked toward us slowly.
Michael stepped back.
“You shouldn’t have come.””
She smiled.
“You always were dramatic, Michael.””
Dad looked at him.
“You know her?””
Michael didn’t respond.
The woman stopped in front of us.
“My name is Rachel.””
She looked at me.
“And I knew your mother.””
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“How?””
Rachel ignored him.
She looked at Amanda.
“You told him everything?””
Amanda looked away.
“No.””
Rachel smiled sadly.
“You never could.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Enough.””
Rachel looked at him.
“Daniel, right?””
He froze.
“How do you know my name?””
“Because Claire talked about you every day.””
The words hit him.
Rachel continued.
“She loved you.””
Dad swallowed.
“Then why did she leave?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She didn’t.””
Again.
That word.
She didn’t.
Everyone kept saying it.
But nobody explained.
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Dad stared.
“What is that?””
“Another piece of the truth.””
Amanda whispered:
“Where did you get that?””
Rachel looked at her.
“Claire gave it to me.””
Dad took it.
His hands shook.
“There’s more?””
“There’s always more.””
He opened it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?””
I asked.
Dad looked at me.
“It says Claire knew she was being watched.””
My stomach twisted.
“By who?””
Rachel answered.
“By someone who wanted control.””
Dad looked at Amanda.
Amanda looked down.
Rachel sighed.
“Claire discovered Amanda was being manipulated.””
“What?””
Everyone looked at her.
Rachel continued.
“Michael was not the only person hiding things.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Rachel ignored him.
“Claire believed someone else was behind everything.””
Dad looked confused.
“Who?””
Rachel looked at the flash drive.
“Watch it.””
We went back to Dad’s truck.
Nobody spoke.
Michael sat in the passenger seat.
Amanda sat beside him.
I sat between Dad and Rachel in the back.
Dad inserted the flash drive into his laptop.
A video appeared.
My mother.
Claire.
She looked older than in the pictures.
Tired.
But alive.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If Ethan is watching this…”
She smiled.
A small, painful smile.
“I’m sorry.””
I covered my mouth.
Dad reached for my hand.
Mom continued.
“I wanted to come home.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted to wake up every morning and make you pancakes.””
Dad looked away.
I saw him crying.
“I wanted to watch you grow up.””
She took a deep breath.
“But someone made that impossible.””
The video shook slightly.
Like she was holding the camera herself.
“Daniel, if you are watching this, I need you to understand something.””
Dad leaned closer.
“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.””
His eyes closed.
“I left because I was afraid staying would put Ethan in danger.””
The screen went black for a second.
Then Claire continued.
“The person responsible is not who you think.””
Dad looked at Amanda.
Then Michael.
Claire said:
“Look at the financial records.””
The video ended.
Everyone was silent.
Then Michael spoke.
“She knew.””
Dad turned.
“Knew what?””
Michael looked exhausted.
“She knew the money trail led to someone close.””
“Who?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“Someone in your family.””
Dad stared.
“What?””
Rachel looked at me.
Then at Amanda.
“The person who caused all of this wasn’t trying to hurt Claire.””
She paused.
“They were trying to take Ethan.””
My blood ran cold.
Dad immediately pulled me closer.
“No.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
Amanda started crying.
“I tried to stop it.””
Dad looked at her.
“Then why did Ethan suffer?””
She had no answer.
Michael looked away.
Rachel opened another folder on the laptop.
“There’s more.””
Dad stared.
“How much more?””
Rachel’s expression was serious.
“Enough to explain why Claire disappeared.””
The folder contained documents.
Photos.
Messages.
And one name repeated over and over.
Amanda’s father.
Dad whispered:
“Her father?””
Amanda looked terrified.
“He was supposed to be gone.””
Rachel looked at her.
“People like him don’t disappear.””
The room went quiet.
Dad looked at Amanda.
“Who was he?””
She didn’t answer.
Rachel did.
“The man who controlled Claire’s life before she met you.””
I looked at Amanda.
For the first time, I saw something different.
Not anger.
Not cruelty.
Fear.
Real fear.
Because whatever this was…
It was bigger than a missing mother.
Bigger than a stolen letter.
Bigger than a broken family.
Dad closed the laptop.
“We need to find Claire.””
Rachel nodded.
“But before that…”
She looked at Amanda.
“We need to know if you were telling the truth.””
Amanda wiped her tears.
“About what?””
Rachel stared at her.
“About helping Claire escape.””
Amanda looked down.
And after a long silence, she whispered:
“I didn’t help her escape.””
Dad’s face changed.
“Then what did you do?””
Amanda looked at me.
May you like
And her answer destroyed the last piece of the story I thought I understood.
“I helped her disappear.””
