Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Door

The nursery door opened by itself.

Only an inch.

Then another.

The crying had stopped.

Nobody moved.

I stood at the bottom of the stairs, staring into the darkness beyond the doorway.

The officer beside me raised one hand.

“Stay back.””

Daniel was behind us.

For the first time since I had met him, he looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Terrified.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “what did you do?””

He didn't answer.

The officer pushed the door open.

A woman stepped into the hallway.

She was holding a photograph.

She looked exhausted.

Her dark hair was pulled into a loose knot, and there were shadows beneath her eyes.

But I recognized her immediately.

“Claire?””

She nodded.

“Grace.””

Vanessa made a strangled sound.

“You were supposed to be in Boston.””

Claire looked at her.

“I was.””

“Then why are you here?””

Claire's eyes moved to Daniel.

“Because your husband lied to me too.””

Daniel took one step backward.

“Claire, don't.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Don't what? Tell the truth?””

The officer moved between them.

“Everyone stays where they are.””

Claire walked downstairs slowly.

When she reached me, she held out the photograph.

My hands trembled as I took it.

It showed a little girl.

Maybe six years old.

She had dark curls and a gap between her front teeth.

She was standing beside a woman I had never seen before.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

October 14.

And one sentence.

*She belongs with Grace.*

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Claire swallowed.

“Your sister.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

“I don't have a sister.””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes, you do.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted, “She's lying!””

Claire turned toward her.

“You told Grace her family abandoned her.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“I know exactly what I'm talking about.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Claire, stop.””

She looked at him.

“You promised me you'd protect Emma.””

“I did.””

“You tried to kill her.””

“No.””

“You used Vanessa.””

“No.””

“You used Grace.””

Daniel's face went blank.

Claire pointed at me.

“You knew Grace would save that baby.””

I couldn't breathe.

The officer looked at Claire.

“Start from the beginning.””

Claire nodded.

But before she could speak, Vanessa rushed toward the front door.

The second officer caught her.

“Where are you going?””

“To my daughter.””

“You're staying here.””

“She's my baby!””

“You just confessed that your husband ordered you to push the stroller.””

Vanessa began screaming.

“You don't understand!””

Claire flinched.

Then she looked at me.

“She's right about one thing.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“You don't understand.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“Not yet.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

The name printed on it was *Emma Hale*.

Underneath was another name.

*Mother: Grace Brooks.*

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Claire nodded.

“Emma isn't Vanessa's biological daughter.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa stopped struggling.

The entire house went silent.

I stared at the bracelet.

“That isn't possible.””

Claire whispered, “It is.””

“Why would a hospital list me as her mother?””

“Because you are.””

My fingers went numb.

“I never had a baby.””

Claire's voice softened.

“You did.””

I looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

“Tell her,” Claire said.

Daniel remained silent.

“Tell her what happened twelve years ago.””

I felt something inside me break.

Twelve years.

The photograph.

The little girl.

My supposed missing memories.

Suddenly, pieces of my life began colliding.

A hospital.

A newborn crying.

My mother's voice.

Then nothing.

For years, I had believed my mother died when I was eighteen.

I had believed she had been the only person left in my family.

But Claire was shaking her head.

“Your mother didn't die the way they told you.””

I whispered, “What are you saying?””

“She was murdered.””

Vanessa whispered, “Claire…”

Claire turned on her.

“You knew.””

“I didn't.””

“You were there.””

“No.””

“You were nineteen.””

Vanessa covered her face.

Daniel grabbed the back of a chair.

The officer asked, “Mrs. Hale, what is Claire referring to?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Claire looked at me.

“Your mother found out Daniel was involved in something illegal. She threatened to expose him.””

Daniel suddenly shouted, “That's enough!””

The officer turned.

“Sit down.””

Daniel didn't move.

Claire continued.

“She had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Financial records. Names. Payments.””

“Payments for what?””

Claire's eyes met mine.

“Babies.””

My stomach turned.

She opened another envelope.

Inside were photocopies of adoption records.

Dozens of them.

Different names.

Different dates.

Different hospitals.

But every file had the same signature.

Daniel Hale.

I stared at the papers.

“He was selling babies?””

Claire shook her head.

“Not exactly.””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Some parents paid him to make certain babies disappear.””

A chill ran down my spine.

“Why?””

Claire's voice dropped.

“Because some babies were worth more alive than dead.””

The officer took the documents.

“What does that mean?””

Claire looked toward the nursery.

“Emma was born with something Daniel wanted.””

I whispered, “What?””

Before Claire could answer, my phone rang.

Everyone looked at the evidence bag on the table.

My phone was still broken.

It couldn't ring.

The sound came from upstairs.

The nursery.

The officer drew his weapon.

“Everybody stay here.””

He ran upstairs.

I followed before anyone could stop me.

The nursery door stood open.

A small phone lay inside the crib.

It was ringing.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don't answer it.””

I stared at the screen.

One name appeared.

*MOM.*

My mother's name.

A woman who was supposed to have been dead for twelve years.

Then the call connected by itself.

A voice whispered through the speaker.

“Grace?””

I stopped breathing.

“Mom?””

There was a pause.

Then she said:

“Your baby isn't the only thing Daniel stole from you.””

The line went dead.

May you like

And behind me, Daniel whispered:

“She was never supposed to find you.””
